Apologies for not being online yesterday. I forgot my new apartement didn’t have an internet connection.
Yes I did have a few battles in Canal (and a whole bunch of other maps) when it got released. Though I’ve mostly been playing Comm Link and Melt Down.
What is it they lack according to you?
What characterises the official maps is the multiple ways in which environments can be used. You can just see that thought has been put in every corner and room to make for interesting battles. This is not so the case in any custom map I’ve played. It’s understandable as only having one author and limited testers you can’t ‘grind’ one location and keep adjusting it until it feels right like big budget companies can. Custom maps are heavily dependent on the first idea the author has, there simply aren’t enough resources to explore many other options.
Take the first objective, it’s just a bunch of obstacles scattered around the EMP generator, just look at how any objective in the stock maps are treated, every location gives room for multiple scenarios instead of just being scenery to fight the map.
It’s way too much asked to let custom maps equal that quality, and therefore I don’t, the maps are awesome considered only one person and not an entire team worked with a big bag of cash worked on it. But then to go all offended when someone points this out, that’s just hinging on arrogance. It would be like a 3D graphics student getting all upset when someone told him that his animations aren’t on the same level of Avatar.
The thread starter voiced his wish for new official maps, I find that understandable because the alternatives naturally aren’t up to that level of quality. You guys are however completely right in that there won’t ever be new official QW maps and that the custom maps are the only thing next to them.
Just don’t act as if they’re the same, they’re not.
