Quake Wars Campaign for new content

(tokamak) #61
I believe there is no hope on your fair judgment…

You really want to play then?

Also it’s lame the way you ask others what are the better custom maps, like if this is connon sense from everyone. Or about “custom maps that rival one of the official”. Rival? We are not rival-ing with splash damage for your judgment pleasures.

Who will give you ears, beside the oportunists?
Ah, bailing out now are we? That’s okay, it’s a high standard after all.

(iwound) #62

tokamak just use your common sense and go and try them all and make your own opinion instead of trying to pick fights with people on this forum who work hard at giving people free content. Its not about whats best but the fact that these are new and different and there will be no more official maps.

(tokamak) #63

I understand that some of my comments have offended people (i didn’t mean that, the official standard is just that high), however the ball is in the court of the custom supporters here. Before they took over this was originally about raising support for new official content. A foolish, but understandable endeavour.

(timestart) #64

What the **** are you talking about, tokamak?

(iwound) #65

Hopefully tokamak we will see you on the sunday night nirvana where we can settle this with lead and stroyent. and you will see and experiance some great matches. i suggest connecting now to get all the downloads.

(tokamak) #66

You know what. I will.

Some Custom maps suck, some sucked in their early versions, some are very special and polarize (e.g. baserace, tourian), and some are designed for less players (comm link), so they aren’t completely comparable to the official maps.

But some maps (Canal, ATW3) could definitly form a fifth campaign.

(tokamak) #68

Well Canal and ATW3 aren’t really new now are they? Those were the last custom maps I played before I took a (long) break and I don’t think they’ve changed much since I walked around in them this afternoon (and TimeStar humiliated me with his blaster) they’re impressive custom maps with tremendous amount of work but into them but they still don’t come close to official quality. And please don’t see that as an insult.

(light_sh4v0r) #69

What is it they lack according to you?

(iwound) #70

you cant judge these by merely by walking around. you have to play them in a match to fully realise thier potential.

And tonight will be a great oppurtunity for that.

(murka) #71

Erm… If the attackers have at least 1 good player, the defenders have no chance of winning the map provided they get past obj1.

(.Chris.) #72

Canal is fairly new, it was last map I released, ATW3 was released during the 2nd wave of custom maps.

1st wave: Meltdown and Comm Link

2nd wave: Estate, Maridia, ATW3, Andes, Arcis and free spirit city

3rd wave: Tower, Radar, Tourian, BSG, Baserace, Hoggin and Viomine

4th wave: Consite, Abusir, Canal, team jungle and Oasis…

5th wave (coming soon): Castle Attack, Brinstar and Retake of the forums

6th wave (coming some day!!!): Brimstone and Ji ming temple

(light_sh4v0r) #73

For the 6th wave I have no big hopes up. :frowning:

(AnthonyDa) #74

Don’t forget santorini ! (better than Oasis)

(f34n0r) #75

don’t forget Wake Island and Operation Broken Arrow.

Does anyone know how to get a hold of Pytox or Sunset?

Pytox is on IRC from time to time, never seen sunset.

Apologies for not being online yesterday. I forgot my new apartement didn’t have an internet connection.

Yes I did have a few battles in Canal (and a whole bunch of other maps) when it got released. Though I’ve mostly been playing Comm Link and Melt Down.

What is it they lack according to you?

What characterises the official maps is the multiple ways in which environments can be used. You can just see that thought has been put in every corner and room to make for interesting battles. This is not so the case in any custom map I’ve played. It’s understandable as only having one author and limited testers you can’t ‘grind’ one location and keep adjusting it until it feels right like big budget companies can. Custom maps are heavily dependent on the first idea the author has, there simply aren’t enough resources to explore many other options.

Take the first objective, it’s just a bunch of obstacles scattered around the EMP generator, just look at how any objective in the stock maps are treated, every location gives room for multiple scenarios instead of just being scenery to fight the map.

It’s way too much asked to let custom maps equal that quality, and therefore I don’t, the maps are awesome considered only one person and not an entire team worked with a big bag of cash worked on it. But then to go all offended when someone points this out, that’s just hinging on arrogance. It would be like a 3D graphics student getting all upset when someone told him that his animations aren’t on the same level of Avatar.

The thread starter voiced his wish for new official maps, I find that understandable because the alternatives naturally aren’t up to that level of quality. You guys are however completely right in that there won’t ever be new official QW maps and that the custom maps are the only thing next to them.

Just don’t act as if they’re the same, they’re not.

What? I like how you know more about my map than I do…

(murka) #79

In some ways i find the custom maps to be better. They are aimed at competitive play and thus are more balanced. The design literally starts from plotting paths, chokepoints and objectives, not the pretty newspaper on ground everyone turns off with a cvar or the pretty effects an unbalanced objective does when it blows up.
How is playing in a slightly more controlled environment not more fun? You really like spam when someone shoots you from the spam other side of the map randomly spam killing you? Or when having a spam superb idea, taking time to plant spam a charge on a difficult location only to be killed by spam or because someone looked on the radar… a killer of tactics. You really think it’s disabled in competition for no reason?
Like i said, the quality of(most) custom maps is on par or even better than most officials.

(tokamak) #80

Apparently I do, too bad.

Then why are there so few? The vocal points in the custom maps are incredibly simple.
