Quake Wars Campaign for new content

Simple is good

(tokamak) #82

Alright. I can accept that custom maps are catered for a different audience, I hadn’t thought about that yet. Though that also means understandable that a different audience still wants new official maps. You can’t chastise people for not wanting simple, comp-friendly maps.

(.Chris.) #83

No you don’t, everything is there for a reason and is planned, to suggest I just plonked an objective down and placed obstacles around it just for sake of it is bit silly. While there are still flaws in this particular map, due to trying to move it from a strictly competition map to a more public friendly map, I think it still plays rather well in comparison to other maps, official or otherwise. (yes I’m biased  )

Now people have played the map often they are aware of certain features of the map and try utilise them in different ways to throw off the defense or to counter an attack. For example no one hardly used the platypuses but now they are experimenting with different ways to use them.

Can’t speak for all customs but my own definitely aren’t meant to be of the same style as stock maps, I have no interest in making huge maps that promote spam tatics, hill hugging, vehicle whoring, reliance on deployables and the need for a radar, I’ve approached my main maps in a similar method to that as one would for an W:ET map

(Violator) #84

Dunno where this comp-only thing for customs came from - I’ve never written a map for the comp scene (in QW anyway) as I don’t play comp myself and have no intention of doing so as a confirmed pubber. I’ve done a large pub map (Estate) and an infantry map (Steedium Mines) but neither is aimed at the comp scene though I did do a ‘pro’ version of Estate once which skips the MCP stages.

I’ve seen the same ‘evolution’ in custom and vanilla maps as well as players discover new routes and tactics, thats part of the fun of making them tbh.

Chris has probably thought out his layouts more than anyone else here btw so you talk crazytalk tokamak.

(Donnovan) #85

Please, don’t call me offended because i tryed to answer you using my intelligence.

You is not at a callcenter call, OK?

--------//---------

Life tip for the good:

“No problem in getting offended for me. Since people don’t tell me how to act my self, i will not change my actions due to others behavior.”

“Also, don’t get offended by the price of instinct over inteligence, this will not make you a winner when you reach your home, or exit your room, or turn off your computer…”

(tokamak) #86

No doubt he did, but it just doesn’t come close to the way official ETQW maps…

…or W:ET maps for that matter. You want Canals to be compared to W:ET maps? Fair enough, which stock map shall we lay next to it? Goldrush? Siwa?

Once again, Chris delivered impressive work but let’s not live under the pretense that he can be the equal to a professional development studio, nobody is expecting that anyway.

(Tanzverbot) #87

would be silly of him to aspire to outclass such gems as quarry.

(murka) #88

Makes me wonder how quarry slipped through then…

(shirosae) #89

Man, if only custom maps could also revolve entirely around spamming artillery from the other side of the map, blind hillside obliterator spamming and tormentor diving.

Serious post: Why would anyone even make a distinction between a ‘regular’ and ‘comp’ maps? The whole point of a ‘comp’ map, I thought, was that it was actually developed continually with proper players giving feedback until it presented a play area balanced, varied and fun enough that two teams can push the game to its limits without the map breaking.

To that extent, shouldn’t all maps aspire to be ‘comp’ maps? Or am I misunderstanding the definitions?

Hi

Guess this thread has turned into somthing else altogether
First off I love the custom maps, i tried and failed and gave up very quickly making one myself

The whole height map conversion thing was a mind F
Shame as i had used mud box to create an awsome terraine.

I like that people are supporting it, Quite a few ocb (including Ads) have played mods and maps, perhaps not religously, but hey, vanilla’s our thing.Alot of hard work has gone into these maps, and the guys running Nervana should be lauded for there work suporting the Dev’s.

The whole point of this Face book was not a dig at others or a rehash of more maps please
i’ve been on the old forums since 1.2 and it was tireing that every other thread for a while was the same whiny BS…that or about the f’n Balance.
The Point of the Face book thing is

HANDS UP WHO LIKED QUAKE WARS AND WHO WOULD LIKE A SEQUEL/MORE?
HOPEFULLY MADE BY SD

If enough people could sign up…you never know…I know what i expect will happen, but it’s not like i’m being asked to stand in the rain with a sign.

Anyhoo

Keep on fragging

Me and probably everyone whos played an SD game.
But you must expect that if its posted in this forum then it will be discussed. And more than likely you will get different opinions.

And if people, including myself want to point out the fact that there will not be any updates to QW then were entitled to do so, as are you to ask for updates. People dont have to read the comments or respond to them.

there are two camps.
1- sign a FB page
2- make, play, support custom content

If 1 is succesful then we all get some great new levels.
If 2 is succesful then we get some fun mediocre levels.

If either are succesful then QW gets a bit more life and enjoyability for those who play it.

Which is more likely to happen? Maybe the one that takes a lot more hard work than pressing a button.

The whole height map conversion thing was a mind F
dam i relied on the tut on the old forums for that. now im mind F stressed.

gee if you have some work already done then please post it in the QW editing forum as others may be able to use it.

(Sniper47) #92

I am for new official maps too.

(oxy) #93

Nice one. This is gonna be a long long (flame-) war.

Going to get some popcorn…

(Apples) #94

Absract : What!!! new official OMG go to hell.

To pick my words I’ll say new “official” maps arent going to happen IMO. I’ll be more than up for a sequel if they fix the bloody netcode and unhit stuffs.

Peace

He seems to think that anything custom is comp-only for the most part, and that he represents the majority. To be honest there are only a few customs that are suitable for comp, and the rest are about equal to the stocks. Customs would need to be well tested in order to ensure that they are balanced enough to allow for 12v12 play. Unfortunately no one plays customs because of the rank/stat issues, which is pretty sad. Still they are great for those who play for fun rather than rewards. I appreciate all the hard work the map makers have done for this game and am only sad that so few people actually play them or give them credit :(.

Yep its a bit too late to do anything now. I doubt we will see a sequel unless SD is able to fund a project on their own as well, but I think everyone wants to move on to new and better things.

(gee666) #97

Why can’t you be in both camps…why can’t there be no camps…DAMIT WHY CAN’T WE ALL JUST GET ALONG???

Anyhoo

I know what you are saying, i guess i personaly just don’t see it so black and white as i llove the coustom maps and mods

I know that the chances of a new QW let alone one made by SD are slim to none but as i said the FB thing costs me nothing and hey it might happen

sadly when i did a clean install of windows i may have lost it…i’ll have a check and if it’s around i’ll give it to whoever could use it

(iwound) #98

tbh i expect some kind sequel in the future but i wouldnt hold your breath. its new maps that im not holding out for.

if you installed win 7 it may have left all your goodies still intact. it did for me anyway. but search doesnt always work.

(gee666) #99

nope a fresh install of XP

But i backed up to an externall drive first

Just

Things ain’t where they should be on it

(gee666) #100

nope no joy, still have mudbox but no save files

mabey try and muck about with it
