(Nail) #121

this isn’t a how leet my computer is thread

(Reese) #122

will my comp play QW?

Asus a8n sli premium
160 gb hdd
amd athlon 3000+ 1.81 ghz
2 x 512mb ram in duel channel
XFX geforce 7950gt 512mb (getting on January 27)

:?

(Nuclear Mr.Rogers) #123

2.6 P4
768 DDR
7600 gt

Well, I’ll be able to play at something like medium detail at 800 x 600 right??

(Vimto) #124

You should be OK to play, I’m not far off that spec and my system copes (just) with Q4. I’m P4 2.4 / 768DDR / GF6600GE so your better graphics card should help.

Oh and just to rub everyones nose in it (including mine) I’m just building this for a customer:

AM2 4600 Dual Core
Asus Crosshair Mainboard
GF 8800GTX Graphics
2* 1GB 800MHz Ram

The reason it isn’t complete? Still waiting for the £250 Zalman Fatal1ty case for it all to go in.

Needless to say, it will be thoroughly tested before the customer gets it - he may have to wait until ETQW has come out

(Vimto) #126

Please re-read my post - I did say that his better card would help (ie be an improvement over mine)

(dan9of9) #127

 well its nice to see that the Forums are back up!

I have been slaving away with new Vista driver problems at my workplace and have had little time to do anything but that. Its nice to be back here again to help all those that need it and be critiqued by those that dont agree with my advice.

So there you have it. If you need help with your possible computer upgrade or new computer build. Ask questions in this thread and there is a distinct possiblilty that some one (those other than me I cannot confirm the actual skill of) will answer your question.

I will help too, reading loads of benchmarks and following all tech news and helping ppl at the best visited tech community from the netherlands, no problem at all.

Vista drivers dont have a performance drop, at least not much (except for openGL, which ETQW is rendered with…, nVidia said to work on it). Vista runs great and after upgrade to 2GB dualchannel ram, games even got more FPS in vista! (so more in vista compared to XP!)

System:
Asus A6T Laptop

AMD Turion 64 X2 TL-52 1.6GHz
2048 DDR2-667 Dualchannel
100GB 5400rpm HDD
GeForce Go 7600 512MB (256MB ded)/256MB TC)
Windows Vista Ultimate x64 RTM

(DarkangelUK) #130

I’m not sure ill be able to run it, i can play Q4 with a tweaked cfg… but MP does slow down in a lot of areas.

AMD +3200 @ 2.2ghz
768mb PC2700 333 ram
GeForce FX 5900XT 128mb

Think i have a smidgen of a chance? I’m planning on upgrading soon hopefully, if not… guess ill find out when it’s release.

(ParanoiD) #131

Weird, I tought that system would tun it faster… At least i would wait till ET:QW and test then… Upgrading an AGP card isn’t great (and you will be throwing away money for a real upgrade). CPU is good enough and the ram, its only 333MHz, thats sad as well for an upgrade…

I think you could score a 2nd hand 6800 AGP card and maybe 256MB to upgrade to 1GB, that should run ET:QW.

(ayatollah) #132

Speaking of Vista, there seems to be problems with graphics drivers. Tried playing W:ET today and was getting an erratic <30 FPS. Any one have any solutions?

Luckily I am dual booting so XP for games at the moment.

(ParanoiD) #133

Ive got no under 60 FPS, stable 100 and goes up to 200. Using Vista Ultimate RTM x64, Driver 100.30 driver, GeForce Go 7600 256MB.

First drivers sucked, same FPS as you, i suggest to download the latest driver from laptopvideo2go.com and get the inf from an nvidia driver to support your card, 100.54 is the latest, not tested by me yet… They say it is teh final for the Vista launch of tomorrow. You could wait for tomorrow as well for drivers. OpenGL still suck nvidia said themself, but they are working on it. At least the new drivers have much improvement i saw.

Just ran Quake 4 1.2 SMP. Didn’t know/too lazy to check fps but:
High quality, all other on high, 2xAA ran fine without lag. Nice framrate i guess, at least good playable.

Rig:
AMD Turion 64 X2 TL-52 1.6GHz
2048MB DDR2-667 Dualchannel
GeForce Go 7600 256MB
100GB 5400rpm HDD
Windows Vista Ultimate x64 RTM

I just upgraded a friends 8 year old machine :

ASUS Mobo (not the best)
Athlon 2800+ Barton
40 Gig western digital HDD IDE
512 SDRAM
Geforce FX5200
Creative 16bit
430W antec truepower (20 pin)

for the amount of $550.00 US…

To this:

ASUS mobo (SATA, PCIe, and 8GB max RAM)
120Gb Seagate HDD IDE
AMD athlon64 x2 4400 (socket 939)
1GB Corsair XMS Platinum Series DDR 400
eVGA Geforce 7600GT 256mb
400W Antec smartpower (EATX 24pin with SATA, & PCIe support)

Put everything in the old case after cleaning and replacing a fan. From first post to first Windows XP boot was flawless. Mobo has nForce 4 chipset with hardware firewall. Runs smooth and cool. Plenty of room to grow in the RAM and GPU areas with DDR400 coming down in price as DDR is phased out (for DDR2), and with the PCIe x16 slot (and the dedicated power line ) my friend could even upgrade OS to vista and buy a DX10 card. None of the parts are the most bleeding edge, but then again his wallet is not bleeding either.

(DarkangelUK) #135

Well i just ordered my new parts…

Intel C2D E6600 @ 2.4ghz
1gb Kingston 533mhz ram (getting more later)
MSI 945P Neo3-F mobo
BFG GeForce 8800GS 640mb

(Moriarty) #136

Looks like a great build! Do you plan to get vista for that DX10 goodness?

(WEARESURROUNDED!) #137

Hello there,

i just downloaded and installed the Linux Quake IV demo because of the “When it runs quake4 it will run ET:WQ” statement. Guess what. On high quality setting it was a freaky lagging show. So heres my system:

Motherboard: A7N8X
CPU: AMD 2500+ Barton
Memory: 1GB RAM
Graphics Card: ATI Radeon 9500 Pro
Powersupply (watt output): BeQuiet 350W

I planned to buy a complete new system which includes Mainboard, CPU, RAM, Graphics Card, what components would you approve?

My budget is max(!) 800 Euros / 529.84 British Pound / 1041.84 U.S. dollar / 1226.55 Canadian dollar / …

Thanks in advance!

(Bmw1000c) #138

wel… a new CPU, MoBo and VGA is enough… imo.

(DarkangelUK) #139

If you’re getting decent stuff then you’re also gonna have to add ram and a new PSU to the list that the 1ltr bmw owner said.

(BrightSoul) #140

I suggest you wait 2 months or so before buying new parts.
For once, Intel will drop the prices for its Core 2 Duo processors (E6600 29% off, E6700 40% off) starting April 22nd.
Plus, in the near future nVidia/ATi will finally reveal their middle-end dx10 video cards. You will get a change to buy a next-gen video card at an “affordable” price.

Every gamer using XP will eventually switch to Vista so it doesn’t make sense to me to buy a dx9 video card today, unless you use to replace your hardware every 6 months.

Check the GeForce 8800 GTS 320Mb that’s coming in two weeks. Should be sold at 300$.
This is the one I will probably buy but I won’t be sure until I see some benchmarks and, of course, something from ATi.

Be patient, Quake Wars is still a few months away.
Interesting stuff will show up on the market in the meatime.
