Is Yor Computer Ready For ET:QW?? ~Free DIY Upgrade Help!~

(*Evil*Obl!vion) #141

I have:

DFI Lanparty nF4 Ultra-D socket 939
Amd Athlon 64 3800+ X2 Toledo @ 2.9Ghz (stock 2.0Ghz)
2x 1GB OCZ PC4000 Gold DDR1 @ speed to make it run @ pc4000 fergot the number LOL
eVGA 7900GT CO @ 557/1670
LG L204WT 20" Widescreen
Logitech mx1000 laser
Speed-Link 5.1 headset.

When running Quake 4 @ high (1680x1050) or Doom 3 @ ultra (1680x1050) I get constant 60 fps, but I have strange drop-outs to 30 exactly, a second later its 60fps again. What’s causing this? My pc struggeling at this quality? Anyways I think my pc is capable of running ET:QW at high res

Nice overclocking. Ofcourse your PC is capable, its great. The drops could be caused by other apps using the disk at the same time like a virus scanner. You don’t need a upgrade, unless you want DX10 :stuck_out_tongue:

Hi there, thanks for your replies!

How much RAM is appropriate at the moment, two 1GB sticks?
And how much watt needs a current hardware configuration at the moment?

Yeah, I planned actually to wait until QW:ET is released

I think I don’t switch from Linux / XP dual boot to Linux / Vista dual boot because fortunately there will be a ET:WQ Linux client. (Unless theres a new game, Vista only, which i absolutely have to play)

(DarkangelUK) #144

Yeah, id say around 2gb atleast. If you’re upgrading to todays high end cards, they suggest a 500w minimum and a 600w recommended PSU.

I can understand the LAG from your last comp… lets make your new one a “lag free” environment. This is what you will need.

eVGA 680i Motherboard
Intel Core2duo E6300
1GB Corsair XMS2 DDR2 PC800
eVGA 8800GTS

all of this came out to $913.00 U.S. Dollars

leaving you just enough to get a new power supply. Now Gut out all the components in your case you will be replacing, and get to gaming!

(ParanoiD) #146

He starts off with euros which probably he is from Europe. Therefore you could say Dollar=Euro because of all taxes etc.

Get 2GB dualchannel 667 if you want to overclock. It will be at the max of the CPU FSB of 1066 (2x533 dualchannel). so better (800MHz) memory wont make a difference. Then get the E6300 and OC it to a E6600. That would be easy. Get a supply and a nice Mid-end DX10 GFX by then. That would be possible.

Sounds like you have vsync enabled. When that is on it throttles the framerate so that it fits into 60hz without tearing (that odd effect where for a frame half the screen will seem to be a moment behind the other half)

So I wouldn’t worry about your hardware, it’s more than possible your computer could render those slower parts at 59fps, but vsync makes it drop down to 30, preserving visual quality over speed.

(Covernant) #148

Im worried that im unable to play QW… lol…

So i run an:
AMD Athlon 64, 1800 MHz (9 x 200) 2800+
640 MB (DDR SDRAM)
ATI Radeon 9550 128mb (thats the one im worried about <.<)

And i run doom 3 fine… must try quake 4 i quess…

(ParanoiD) #149

Those would probably be like almost the minimum requirements. At least your GFX will be and also almost your RAM.

(WEARESURROUNDED!) #150

Thanks for your replies!

I searched and added together the components which Moriarty suggested:

  • EVGA nForce680i SLI: 267,19€
  • Intel Core2 Duo E6300 2x1.86GHz BOXED: 199,99€
  • 1024MB Corsair PC2-800: 130,09€
  • EVGA (Retail) 8800GTS 640MB 2xDVI/TV: 369,99€

                                                              967,26€

So ParanoiD was quite right.

Okay this components are getting cheaper until April, but are there any other, ehm, at the moment cheaper, quality parts for e.g. the mainboard and graphics? (is SLI necessary?)

I think i don’t want to mess around with overclocking, I’m to afraid too damage something… :\

Is this psu strong enough to take on a E6600 + 8800GTX ?

(Salteh) #152

Probably, but it usually also depends on how much other hardware you have installed and on how good the power supply really is.
My shuttle 240W psu has no problem powering my A64 3000+ / 7800GT for example :).

(ParanoiD) #153

Yeah, I think it would handle it. CoolerMaster is a good brand!

(knuckles) #154

well… here’s my rig…

AMD Athlon XP 2500+ (1.8 Ghz)
1 GB Mem
Nvidia Geforce Ti 4200 AGP 8x

so what are my chances for ET:QW on this ?
:stuck_out_tongue:

(Nail) #155

the disk should fit in the drive, after that… :moo:

(ParanoiD) #156

Hmm, 640x480 low max 30fps… I think the system is just at the edge of capable running ETQW. My old rig (Athlon XP 2000+, 1GB, Radeon 9600Pro) was just capable of running Quake4. I think you would need a whole new rig to get decent fps and performance. An little pgrade would be possible, but you would still be 1.5-2 years behind…

(k0z4k) #157

AMD Athlon 3200+ (2 GHz)
1 GB Ram Memory
Geforce 6600 128MB
Motherboard: Gigabyte Nforce 440

All I want is 45 fps+ and QW demo in march

Good hunting for cheaper parts WEARESURROUNDED!

but not until the newer lower priced DX10 cards come out will the nVdia 8 series cards get any cheaper. I would think that buying one part at a time when you find sales might help with saving your cash.
