Is Yor Computer Ready For ET:QW?? ~Free DIY Upgrade Help!~

(Moriarty) #1

This Topic is about your computer… Either your VERY sure that it will play ET:QW with no problems (if so you should stop reading here), If you are NOT sure you computer can handle ET:QW… I can try and help you tweak, or upgrade your systems by giving you good info on how to make your machine run better. I am a System builder with a small business building custom machines. I WILL NOT>> REPEAT>>WILL NOT BUY YOU STUFF. Money is already in short supply in my life due to my own lust for tech. BUT I will in fact help you make your ho-hum machine do its absolute best by guiding you to little steps to make your system run its best.

If you have a question please post your system specs:

Motherboard:
CPU:
Memory:
Graphics Card:
Powersupply (watt output):

This way I can get a little bit of info on what I am dealing with, dont forget to write a “good” description of your problem, or question. I will try and get to all info requests, but as life can be crazy sometimes I promise to do my best to get to everyone in a timely matter. Remember. ET:QW is going to be REALLY intense on most computer hardware, so if you have any doubts about your systems strength to run it… Now is the time to make sure its working “just right” before you have a sadface from getting 3 frames per second on release day. Remeber no question is too trivial (as long as it actually has to do with computers) so dont be afraid to ask. I look forward to helping people find out all the things you wanted to know about your computer, but were afraid to ask.

It is almost as ready as me.

I think somebody from SD once said, that if your computer is good enough to run Quake 4 it will be good enough for ET:QW. So if in doubt, just download the Quake 4 demo and see for yourself I’d say

Motherboard: TriGem Cognac Socket 370
CPU: 633MHz Celeron
Memory: 256MB PC100 SDRAM
Graphics Card: GeForce2 MX
Powersupply (watt output): 120W

Help! I want to play ET:QW!

(Moriarty) #6

Sorry but I dont build macs… in fact only mac builds mac… kinda leaving the small business person out in the cold… unless you want to be a computer salesman, and not a system builder…

but to answer your question: the new macs are intel cpus … you have a core duo and the X1600, an 2gb RAM should do fine.

(Moriarty) #7

Already more than neccesary for playing ET:QW, but I think that you knew that… Geforce 7800’s are at an all time low in price… so picking up another… if you have the cash now is the time to buy to make that SLi magic happen on that second 16 lane PCIe slot, but when you do make sure your case has PLENTY of airflow across the 2 graphics cards as the heat in that area doubles with the second card.

I’ve been upgrading my peripherals so far, will get a new mobo, cpu and mem before the game comes out.

G7 mouse
G15 keyboard
20.1" Samsung LCD - friggin beatiful with a little black border makes it seem like it’s alot bigger.

Current PC
P4 2.4Ghz Prescott
Asus P4S800
1GB PC 2700 non-dual
ATI x700

PC I’m going to buy
P4 3.2GHz +
Near top of the line Asus or Abit Mobo
2 GB dual channel mem, fastest I can afford
Unsure on vid card

No AMD because I use Visual Studio, Maya, and other development programs that seem to always perform better on Intel chips… and they play games fine. My current crappy rig runs Prey at 1024x768 with most things on high settings fine.

Thanks Senator!

I read somewhere that ET:QW is actually a modified version of the Doom3 engine, but as Quake3, and Doom3 are both Id software… there cant be That much difference could there? So Possibly using the Quake3 demo could be a good benchmarking tool for testing your systems ability to run ET:QW, or even getting the Doom3 demo might be good too…

(Moriarty) #10

Well Ive got good news and bad…

The bad news is: The celeron was one of the worst chips ever built, and yours is under the 1ghz mark in speed which means your FSB (front side bus) speed is probably 333mhz (both of which could REALLY lag ET:QW).

The good news: If you dont want to upgrade your entire system, you have an opportunity to make that one a little better… if your AGP slot is of the X8 variety you can purchase a new graphics card (I recommend Geforce 7800GS, or ATI X1600)… You can also upgrade your RAM for about $70 for a 1GB stick (make sure your system can use that much). If you do upgrade to a newer video card you should upgrade your power supply to at least a 350-400 watt.

Right now with AMD changing thier sockets to AM2 the older socket 754 boards are incredibly cheap… many manufacturers have these boards stocked with newer features such as PCIe graphics slots and dual channel memory compatibility, along with the fact that the sempron CPU’s are less expensive you have a good alternative to the ultra new (and expensive) AM2 socket. I recommend this road to anyone trying to upgrade for less.

Quake3 is completely different from Doom 3. It is highely unlikely that Quake3 performance would tell you anything useful about ET:QW peformance, but that isn’t what senator suggested. Quake 4, is, like ET:QW, a modified Doom 3 engine. However, indications are that ET:QW will be quite different from either Q4 or D3, so it’s not clear how good a test this will be. Certainly, if your system doesn’t play Q4 well, odds are that it isn’t going to play ET:QW well either.

The bad news is: The celeron was one of the worst chips ever built, and yours is under the 1ghz mark in speed which means your FSB (front side bus) speed is probably 333mhz (both of which could REALLY lag ET:QW).

A 633mhz celeron would be a 66mhz FSB, pentium 3 based celeron. Unless it was overclocked, in which case it might be 100mhz. In either case, the answer would be to get a new system.

(senator) #14

are you guys only posting here to rub your e-penis into others faces?

I mean seriously, posting a top of the line config in a thread that deals with whether an (supposedly) aging computer can play ET:QW or how an upgrade could get it there?

thepiman, I am sorry, but your doubts about your computer are justified, with that outdated antique model you will barely be able to play Tetris, you should give it away to charity immediately and buy something new.

(ParanoiD) #15

Lol almost everybody is posting rigs that are easy running ET:QW or rigs that will never be fast enough (they should have been retired as well). So Ill gonna join you guys

Motherboard: Intel BX440SE-2 or something
CPU: Intel PII 350 MHz Slot 1
Memory: 256MB
Graphics Card: nVidia Geforce MX400 64MB
Powersupply (watt output): No Idea, wouldnt be too much

Any ideas? :stuck_out_tongue:

And then the capable rig

My Asus A6T Laptop

Motherboard: ASUS A6T Mainboard
CPU: AMD Turion 64 X2 TL-52 1.6 GHz 2x 512kb.
Memory: 1024 MB DDR-II 667 (1 dimm)
Graphics Card: nVidia GeForce Go 7600 256MB
Powersupply (watt output): Again I have no idea

(kamikazee) #16

Helpdesk: What kind of hardware have you got in your PC?
Caller: All it says is “Pentium inside”. I heard those are good, can I run the game?

Sorry. Couldn’t resist, how bad of a joke it may be.

(Strid) #17

p4 2.4
2x512mb corsair
MSI GF6600 GT
Asus p4s8x

quake4 singleplayer runs smoothly at 1024x768 medium specs

but multiplayer is lags a lot with 800x600 low settings :bored:

(TotalQW|Ace101) #18

I ran the quake 4 demo pretty good at medium settings at 1024 x 768. Although instead of upgrading, I really think I should just get a new comp.

4 Year old Dell Deminsion 8250

CPU: 2.4 Ghz Pent IV
RAM: 512 RD RAM
Video Card: 9800 Pro 128 mb
HD: Basically 55 GB after all the defragments…

(Hakuryu) #19

Yes, your better off buying a new computer, or better yet the parts if you can build them. Your system is similar to mine (above), and with older hardware you are missing out on alot of performance… no dual memory, core, or other newer tech.

This means definately a new mobo, cpu, memory, and psu; and a new video card if you go PCI-E (which I plan to do). My peripherals, sound card, tuner card, CD, and DVD will carry over to the new computer. By the time QW’s comes out (if its really 2007 :frowning: ) you can probably add Vista to the list also if it (QW) uses DX10.

(Sauron|EFG) #20

That is highly unlikely.
