Is Yor Computer Ready For ET:QW?? ~Free DIY Upgrade Help!~

(Moriarty) #21

This is a good point, Unless you have a machine that you feel “will” have problems running ET:QW… you should probably start your own “who has the best computer specs topic”

(Moriarty) #22

you can upgrade that graphics card to a Geforce 7800GS and you should get a better FPS

(Lanz) #23

Just a point here that might be of interest when considering to update. The doom3 engine is quite cpu intensive while setting up the rendering of the frame. The effect is that a card like the 7800 might not come to full use if the cpu is below average.

Is this like a joke thread? I am having serious problem telling. Help!!!

So this is considered rubbing my e-penis in everyones faces? LOL.

well your 9800 is kinda puny… but hay thats genetics!

(Moriarty) #27

was that a joke? I mean are you joking or do you actually write relevant posts? Do you have a hardware problem? Are you planning to upgrade? Does your question have anything to do with computers?

Thsese and other “Exciting” questions to be answered SOOOOON…

God delivered it, I signed for it, world keeps spinning.

CPU: Intel Pentium 4 3.2 GHz
RAM: 1024mb
Video: Currently GeForce FX5500 256mb AGP, Will get a ATi X1600Pro 512mb AGP in a few weeks

(psyco_mario) #30

Advent laptop
512mb ram
ATI RADEON XPRESS 200M
From the ram you can tell i might be able to play…

at 40x30 resolution =D

(ParanoiD) #31

The ram would be enough i guess for low quality, but the GFX! It will give you 1 fps and you cant replace it so your screwed which means you need a new lappy/desktop…

(cannon fodder) #32

AMD Semprom 3400+
Asus A8kv-x-se M/B
768 mb of ram (soon to be upgraded to either 1gb or 2gb)
Creative G-force 4 ti 4400

Could maybe do with a new graphics card, what do you recommend without breaking the bank? (M/B has agp 8x but think my card is only 4x)

Tried this on Quake 4 and it all runs ok, only slows down a little on high res

(ParanoiD) #33

AGP card, then ill recommend a GeForce 6800/7600 series card.

The good news: If you dont want to upgrade your entire system, you have an opportunity to make that one a little better… if your AGP slot is of the X8 variety you can purchase a new graphics card (I recommend Geforce 7800GS, or ATI X1600)… You can also upgrade your RAM for about $70 for a 1GB stick (make sure your system can use that much). If you do upgrade to a newer video card you should upgrade your power supply to at least a 350-400 watt.

Don’t mean to rain on your parade Moriety as you’re doing a great thing by assisting people on here and I hope it contiunes, but for G-Force 6 / 7 xxx cards the minimum specified power supply is 350 Watts ATX 2.0. So your suggested PSU size is marginal (albeit accepting the rest of his system is very low in power demand).

I know its marginal because I have the XFX 6800GT. Mine ran ok on an Enermax 480w ATX 1.2 (lower ATX revision but remember this is a quality supply) but was marginal (I overclocked it very slightly (yup I mean slightly) using XFX’s own tool and I had the card do an emergencey shutdown during BF2 for “low voltage”) - my whole system is definately better since I upgraded to a 650W ATX 2.0 supply.

I’d certainly suggest he goes for something in the 450-500 Watt (ATX 2.0) range to give a margin of safety during high demand peaks, and for longetivity (given that a good PSU can last 8 or 9 years, so several full system changes) I’d also suggest if he can afford it he buys the very highest wattage supply he can as its one less thing to have to buy again later. 1 good high wattage supply will cost less in the long run than upgrading through 2 or 3 cheaper ones. Mine will certainly let me upgrade to a 7900 in the future.

I also seriously doubt that a 633mhz Celeron will let him run the game even with an improved graphics card as the graphics card itself will require processing power in addition to the game. The better the graphics card, the more of the processor it uses. Its well known that even a 3800+ AMD is currently bottle necking graphics performance on some of the latest games, so I doubt a Celeron stands any chance. I’d be tempted to either save for a complete upgrade or a new pc. At least he has until 2007 now.

Just as a side note, a look at Tom’s hardware shows that PSU’s are now being produced at 1KW and apparently the next generation of graphics cards are likely to need one in this range although it looks as if this may be alleviated by making the GC and external component with its own case and PSU: http://tomshardware.co.uk/2006/07/21/the_graphics_state_of_the_union_uk/

So much for energy conservation!!

If I can run Q4 than Im good to Play ET-QW . Im good to go !!!

(samwh) #36

Here are my specs:

Motherboard: Soyo KT600 Dragon Plus
CPU: Athlon XP 3000+ 400 FSB
RAM: Corsair Valueselect 1 GB DDR 400
Video Card: GeForce 5700 LE
Power Supply: 400 Watts

I think my video card needs upgrading. Could you recommend a good AGP one for under 200 bucks? Nvidia preferably.

#37

GF 6800 GS? GF 7800 GS would be the best, of course.

(Moriarty) #38

You can find a geforce 6800xt 256mb for about $189 plus shipping… i would look at newegg.com for an XFX branded one as they carry a double lifetime warrantee.

(Nail) #39

make sure your power supply can handle upgraded vid card

(Baiten) #40

Would this do? My vidcard is pretty crappy, but that’s all I can say since my computer knowledge is pretty low :moo:

Motherboard: ASUS P4P800 SE
CPU: Intel Pentium4 2.80 Ghz
RAM: 1024 MB (that’s memory right?)
Video Card: GeForce 6600GT 125mb
