sin, you’re an asshole plain and simple. And I dont care if saying that gets me banned or not
Banned? I think that deserves a promotion

Hmmm, downloading executable code from someone who stole it using “hack” techniques. (If it is even HL2 and not 1.5Gig of porno)
I’m sure it’s not got a single virus / trojan / exploit of it’s own included as a freebee
Still it’s only sin, the forum-tit downloading it, so let’s hope it completely shafts his machine.
I think that Videogames aren’t a big news items to US news sources–especially with things like the recall vote in California and the Bush administration leaking that CIA agent’s identity and whatnot going on right now. I bet that in the next few days, though, either Vivendi USA or even Valve themselves makes a press release to a good old American newspaper, one that you mind find more palatable, Dam.
;^)
And, by the way, there is no such things “VU France.” There’s just VU, which is in France. They have some offices in the United States, but they’re a French company, dude.
I was wondering how I was going to stand the wait until April until I realized just how many great games are releasing between now and then. Check it out…

Hmmm, downloading executable code from someone who stole it using “hack” techniques.
I wanna know how he’s downloading any sort of executable anyway. From what I hear, the code that was stolen wasn’t the complete code, it was missing some. And besides which, simply compiling it wouldn’t give you HL2 anyway, since you’re missing all the graphics, sounds and other such things. It’s also hard to see how it would come to 1.5gb without any graphics etc. Especially since the code itself is under 100mb uncompiled AFAIK.
The beta that’s out on IRC right now has nothing to do with the code that was also leaked (“stolen”). The beta that’s out there is the beta from E3, and it was probably leaked by the same party that leaked the code. Way to go, ATI.
What I heard was that some people hacked Valve before the source code hack and stole an early beta of the game and valve didn’t know squat about this. The people who stole the beta were going to keep it completely private so as not to screw over valve, they only pinched it for their own desires. When someone else managed to hack valve and steal the source code and publicly distribute it, the beta people decided the damage was done and so released their beta. It is however an early beta and has a lot of content missing and somewhat unrefined levels.
How do I know this? I followed a link to the info file that ships with the dodgy beta. I’ve also seen a ton of screenies showing what each model will be in HL2 which has kinda ruined it a bit for me
Not that it’ll stop me buying the game. There’s a surprising lack of non-player special characters (you know, like Barney, Eli, Dr Klein, Alyx). There’s only about another 3 characters beyond those. Unless of course more character content was added after the beta was half-inched.
And, by the way, there is no such things “VU France.” There’s just VU, which is in France. They have some offices in the United States, but they’re a French company, dude.
I know VU are French and never said otherwise. VU France was just a way of distinguishing between the VU company HQ in France and the VU branches in America.
And so the plot thickens. BBC News reports this from Chris Ramboz of VU:
“Vivendi Universal Games is only the distributor of the product, which is produced by the US studio Valve and so it will up to them to make an announcement,” said the head of Vivendi Universal Games, Christophe Ramboz.
“But it is true that the launch has been delayed by a theft of a part of the game,” he told the Les Echos newspaper.
BBC are saying that the game will not make it before xmas, but do not once mention April. When contacted, Chris is saying that it will be up to valve to make the announcement, and only Les Echos is reporting April.
And thicker…
From HalfLifeSource.com:
Our exclusive visit with Gabe Newell and Valve Software did confirm that only a SMALL PORTION of the source code was taken. This is different than most of the reports. The entire source was not taken. Straight from Gabe Newell.
No Mention Of Half-Life 2 Delay. So far Half-Life 2 is shipping for the HOLIDAYS.
It appears that Valve Software is really close to getting the hackers. They seem to have their names written on a whiteboard. It’s no wonder that it’s business as usual at Valve!
They have names on the whiteboard – the history, date, times – and other things that looked like file names. That was pretty much a quick issue. You know, it’s done! They’re on it! They look like they know who did it.
Business seems to be as usual at Valve, and it appears they are working hard on rolling out Half-Life 2.
By the way, just because a little bit of code compiles doesn’t mean that a person has Half-Life 2. It means they have a small portion of it and that’s all.
We have a slide-show presentation tomorrow on Half-Life Radio.
As usual, keep it here for the latest Half-Life news.
Also from same site:
According to a news article posted today on a UK press release, there is a Half-Life 2 delay. We already know that Valve does is not mentioning a delay.
We received an email from Mike Thompson who says he works for Vivendi Universal and writes:
quote:delay is not confirmed…
Here we go around and around… again…
However, CNN are playing up the theft and saying that hackers stole a lot more than what Valve are letting on. However, this could just be them stipulating about the release of the early beta version mentioned earlier.
I swear that Valve and VU are using this theft for publicity…
There is a nail somewhere, and now (finally) it has been hit squarely upon its head.
Hey, I want everyone to know the truth about the source leak.
I have the code. It is a 32816098 bit rar file (32.8mb). Once unrar’d (extracted) it is roughly 140 mb of code. Now for anyone who doesnt code or know how big this is, think of a 140mb text file… ya this thing is huge. Only the source engine was leaked, the actual half life 2 content was not (maps, sounds, scripts, etc).
There are hundreds of files once unrar’d. They are c/c++ source code files:
libraries .h
c files .c
c++ files .cpp
and hundreds of others that dont stand out to me
I have looked at parts of the code and yes… this is the real thing. The big kahuna. This is the past 4 years of work at valve that has just been stolen.
I think it is terrible that someone would do this to a software foundation like valve. But, having been reading up on the subject, valve may not be as innocent as they let on. The hacker having gained access to valves machines made a copy of the source tree on one of the machines. It was current (up to date) when he made the copy. And from judging what other people have said valve was no where CLOSE to having a finished product (hl2 sp/mp code content or not).
I am unable to compile the code becasue I do not know the superfile or what external libraries (not included in the source tree because they are standard) that may be necessary. Though, I have heard multiple rumors that people HAVE compiled the leaked source from the hl2 engine and can render standard formats. What that means I dont know. Also, once you have compiled the hl2 engine so what, you don’t have the content for the game as of now.
But, the part of the code that is valuable imho is the Steam code. For those of you that dont know, Steam is valves new ‘goal’ or sorts. It is essentially a gaming protocol for you to play and download EVERYTHING related to the games you play, an all in one gaming package. There are MANY MANY flaws in the system (which i wont get into cause I will start flaming as I hate Steam, whoops :)). But, because of this all in one package, people will have private information in the Steam databases:credit card numbers, addresses, names, and other very important imformation. If the protocols of how this information is accessed is released (whoops too late) then anyone, yes anyone, would be able to get around or through the Steam countermeasures and you dont have to follow the yellow brick road very far to see the consequences.
About cheats from the source, yes OGC (online gaming cheat) is having a field day. But, how big of an impact will this be? IMHO I dont think that big. Cheats will happen no matter what valve does. VAC (valve anti-cheat) is still an infant with far too many loopholes. We have already seen many cheats become obsolete (punkbuster, cheating death) and they all will. The fact is that for every programmer working to plug the holes by valve (the only ones that have the code) there are a hundred more programmers trying to shove sticks in the loopholes. Registered OGC programmers already FAR outway the number of people working at valve. Cheats will happen. Yes, it is now easier to make them as you have the source… but so does valve. It takes time to change the code, but another 5 months? Many parts of the cheats have to do with parts of the code talking to each other with number sequences (like encryption) to make sure the connection (hand shake if you will) is valid. The number generators and handlers just have to be changed and many of the easier hacks will also become obsolete. But once again, the main problem is with the steam protocols, they are now completely open to attack and abuse.
As for how the files were stolen, I believe its time microsoft has started to pay for the damages it causes. Flame me if you will, but most of rgoers arguements hold mostly truth in them and I for the most part completely agree with him. It is microsoft’s software that caused the leak using a buffer overflow error WELL KNOWN might I add that microsoft refused to patch. This was not some state of the art CIA hack, this was some guy that just USED (not found) USED a well known bug in outlook to effectively cripple vavle. Now, this hacker did do a phenominal job and if what he wants is respect he definently has it. But, some and a lot of the blame also falls into valves lap. As previously stated they did notice problems but did not take enough measures to stop what was going on. I program (though nothing big…yet :)) but it is absurd! absolutely absurd to put what is your late 5 years of sweat and blood on a machine, running windows, and hooked to the internet. You are practically bending over and asking for it. Hopefully valve will be able to right themselves and get back on their feet, but this is a HUGE blow to valve.
Splash Damage, I thank you for your game and making it free was the best choice you guys ever made. Oh, and I also applaud you and ID for making linix ports of your games. I would not play them if they were not offered on n1x systems. For this I am much appreciative. But, let it be a lesson and not happen to you. Valve has become the martyr in this.
Also, about the E3 demo. That was leaked by the same hacker who released the source tree. It is NOT the leaked code compiled. It is a zip of the E3 demo that was shown. Once you extract it is about 1.5 gigs, and its just a tree copy of necessary files to run that demo. They are not the same thing, but they were released by the same hacker. Talk about valve fixing their security… I dont think so.
Now about the windows vs open source debate. I run a dual booted b0x0r. Only reason I run bad software (windows) on my machine is for the programs wine (www.winehq.com) does not run properly. I love linux, I will never go back to windows. Open source is evolution, it has far surpassed anythign windows has (OS wise). The only reason widnows has this huge footprint is because of its programs. Everything (practically) commertial is written for windows, only because of its big footprint.
Ok, now feel free to flame me. I just wanted to first give everyone the truth about the hl2 source leak, then to give my opinion on the win32 vs os debate.
Now that your eyes hurt so much, Im going to go play ET. Cya there!
Why should I or anyone respect somebody who does something like that? Has he done any good for anybody? Nope, just screwed over a respected company and their customers. I give that person NO respect.
because of this all in one package, people will have private information in the Steam databases:credit card numbers, addresses, names, and other very important imformation. If the protocols of how this information is accessed is released (whoops too late) then anyone, yes anyone, would be able to get around or through the Steam countermeasures and you dont have to follow the yellow brick road very far to see the consequences.
If steam relies on its protocols being obscure to protect personal information, it was fucked to begin with.
I have bought my new 9800 PRO 256MB, you can speculate as to why I made this “should have waited 'til xmas” purchase but suffice to know it may or may not have been (legally good that) for a “non-government endorsed pre-release software evaluation” download to possibly function at it’s full potential.
The card is phenomenal but “it” shall not be commented on.
I also can’t believe why so many people are talking about “it” and don’t have “it”.
Nothing incriminating there at all
.
What the fuck you think I am eh? eh? made of bandwid…ah money, thats right money.
.
Let me know how that card of yours plays then… er… how many frames… er… how fast it is? :blah:
Man there’s no substitute for my girl Doris, the mutton fleeced lovely, who as we speak roams bleeting in the valleys of Wales 'til the “fishing” season starts again and me and my rod hit the road.
