GDF or ADF? [voice accents]

(signofzeta) #41

The british way of saying “Enemy in disguise”.

“By the gods, that bloody Jerry just stole my shirt!!!”

(Dazzamac) #42

By the gods? nah matey the christian types over here only believe in one fictional character at a time. My money is on “Gadzooks”

(kamikazee) #43

Is there no tapir deity available?

(AnarchyAngel) #44

Speaking of accents for different characters what about different races for the characters themselves?

Has anyone seen a Black guy or an Azn?
Come on, Global Defence Force? Its typical American just like they call it the world series in baseball and there they pretty much the only dam country that plays it. Yet they have the gall to call it that?

Lets have some diversity and dare I say it, abit of realism!

(Nail) #45

they aren’t really people, they’re animations, models
you don’t want to play as a generic human, play Strogg

(thewonderfulcar) #46

I started a thread on this very subject a while back - my suggestion was that the accents be based on the map. For example they could have scandinavian accents in the snowy maps, english or sauth effrican in the desert ones etc

(Eddmarkus) #47

nice with some different accents tho, like chinese, spanish, british (we want locki’s voice). would add a certain flavor to the game… and not b americanized :stuck_out_tongue:

I’ll write about this in greater detail here and elsewhere, but basically the deal is this: we had fairly elaborate plans for the GDF VO (and Strogg VO, for that matter), but we’ve had to go with something simpler. We were going to give each player class a unique voice and nationality/ethnicity, but the memory requirements were just prohibitive. Also, the spreadsheet necessary to keep track of 12 different versions of the same V-says, and all the translations required for localisation scared me, and blinded anyone else who saw it. Simply scrolling down any tab of the VO spreadsheet produced an effect like the StarGate bit at towards the end of 2001: A Space Odyssey.

Regretfully, the GDF all speak with one voice, and it’s American. The good news is, it’s a really cool voice. If you liked the W:ET player VO, you shouldn’t be too disappointed.

Keep the V-Say ideas coming, btw.

Here’s one int he wrong thread cuz I quite rebelious, “Man I fekin hate my stoopid American accent” tho comin from Norn Iron I cant really comment!

It would be really cool if some special objectives would have a name and a voice, and you could point at them with your crosshair and it would be included in your VSay

Say: <objective> is under attack!

would translate into: ‘The Bridge is under attack!’ or ‘The Shield Generator is under attack!’, depending on which item you were looking at.

(AKA Sneaky) #51

What would be cool is if we could turn the secondary vsay off, just keep the important ‘‘main’’ ones, like medic, ammo… etc… that way we get less spam.

So do the strogg speak strogg, with a translated message appearing, or a strogg sounding english??

wouldn’t it be easier to have them actually speak strogg? It would only require text translation for localisation instead of different voices.

(Bongoboy) #53

The Strogg speak whatever language you’ve chosen to install the game as. We could have made the Strogg speak in Stroggish, but that would turn all their VO into translated text, and made the V-Say debates far less compelling. Also, it would effectively handicap the Strogg team’s tactical communication and cooperation. So we didn’t do it.

(Danyboy) #54

do they speak <the user language> with a Strogg accent though?

(bazOo-) #55

:frowning: :frowning: :frowning:

i hope there will at least be the possibility to modify the VO without making it an extra mod (perhaps with the developers official authorisation to make it be accepted in online leagues).

so here is the request to all the modders out there:

making an “international-accents-soundpack” would be a project surely a lot of people were pleased about.
so go for it!

(MadDogX) #56

As far as I can remember from the GC in Leipzig, the Strogg spoke english with very distinctive alien accents. I can’t really describe what the accent sounded like, but it was cool enough.

(Bongoboy) #57

Yeah, they have Stroggy accents and FX added :stroggbanana:

(Joe999) #58

this raises one important question: will all versions be the same? in other words: can germans install the english version?

(madness) #59

Isn’t that so with all other games ? I mean, before installing it asks you what language you want to use…

(Joe999) #60

nope. especially not german ones
