Game crash upon launch of QWTA 0.3.4

(Susefreak) #81

@Azuvector Is there anything you’ve changed on your compile machine between release 3.3 and 3.4/3.5?

Maybe try to compile 3.3 for them again and see if the issue still persists.
This might sound like a weird and time consuming idea, but is there a possibility that one of the features in 3.4/3.5 is causing the issues that wasnt implemented in 3.3. Something that’s conflicting with the engine?

@The rest having issues: Since there might be some issues with file permissions, can you guys try to run the game and the mod as administrator/user with the highest permissions/root (I’ve been in a *nix world for too long)(For the ones with Cygwin installed chmod 777 on the etqw game install dir and subdirs).

(Azuvector) #82

Other than the usual periodic upgrades of Windows and drivers, no, not especially. I’m pretty sure I haven’t even patched Visual Studio in that timeframe.

Yeah, I’m willing to dig around into this a bit and see what turns up. The email I’ve got posted on the QWTA website(Credits section.) is also my MSN address, so if anyone wants to add me there, feel free, although I’m not around a huge amount.
Going to be bloody time consuming, but I think the only way to track this down might be to do a revert to v0.3.3 and start building back up to v0.3.4 slowly, to see what change screws things up, or if a fresh compile of v0.3.3 dies too. Thankfully, I’ve got SVN logs of everything, so I can check every single change…
The thing that makes me WTF about this is it’s only affecting like 3 people. >.>

What I’m thinking might be best is trying a new QWTA v0.3.3 compile with you guys, and seeing if that barfs for you… Then proceeding from there, if the new v0.3.3 works or you, compiling a bunch of partial steps between v0.3.3 and v0.3.4 for you to try at once, to try to track down what’s causing this…

I dunno man. I’d be more suspicious of my stuff if it was affecting more people, or if I could reproduce the issue at all. :S
I honestly don’t think it’s a QWTA feature/change, but nitpicky testing should prove where the issue lies.

I’ll see if I can get that started tonight, but it might have to wait until Wednesday for things to kick off on this.

(Azuvector) #83

Okay. First set of test binaries here. (Windows-only. AFAIK this issue only affects 3 Windows users.)
Those people having the issue mentioned in this thread, please give this a try and post the results…

There are 4 different compiles in this zip file, just unzip the game000.pk4 file in each into your QWTA 0.3.5 folder and see if QWTA will load or if it still crashes. One of these should hopefully definitely work(qwta-rev612), while one of them should hopefully definitely crash(qwta-rev685). The other two are there to help narrow down where a change might have occurred.

If they all crash, I’m going to have to look into the version of Visual Studio I’m using, and see what happens there(Maybe I patched it QWTA v0.3.3->v0.3.4 and that’s broke things somehow.). Hope that’s not it though, rather be able to point to a specific problem at this point, even if it doesn’t make sense.

Please note that QWTA probably won’t work properly with any of these in general, although feel free to poke around with a working version, you might see some WIP stuff that I’ve taken out of releases, since these are in-between versions of things. :stuck_out_tongue: You won’t really be able to join any servers with them either. Just see if it loads past the usual crash or not, and confirm at least one of them does still crash.

Hi, i’m more than willing to try the releases out in that zip file, but could it be uploaded somewhere else? Rapidshare craps out in my country, i can’t download from there reliably. Thanks and sorry for the inconvenience…

Maybe this will be better for you

Thanks timestar.

Gratitude! :stroggbanana:

EDIT: i have tested all the 4 revisions in the zip file azuvector posted. ALL of them have the crash, and here are the logs…:confused:

#^#$@^@!#^@!#

Okay, I’ll see about maybe reinstalling Visual Studio 2005 when I get home or something, this is bizarre. 612 is from before QWTA v0.3.3’s release, IIRC.
At least it doesn’t look like something I screwed up on directly. XD Even if it’s still all guesswork still. Compiler bug or something maybe, if I patched VS2005 and then forgot I’d patched it… (Some weird esoteric thing though, or else it should be affecting way more people(like me for instance!) than just you guys.)

Bizarre… >.>

edit
For ****s and giggles, I’m going to compile a plain BaseETQW SDK compile for you to try, Duke, when I get home tonight, before I uninstall my current install of VS2005. Betcha it crashes too…

edit2
Could any other programmers doing ETQW stuff post their Visual Studio version numbers, including any SP’s installed, and if you’re using VS 2005, 2008, 2010 or something else? And if you’re using Express or full? (Help->About stuff.)

(Azuvector) #89

Duke, mind giving this a try, see if it crashes?
Unzip to your ETQW folder, run as its own mod, it’s just a clean compile of the BaseETQW 1.5 SDK, no changes whatsoever, using my current version of VS2005.
VS2005 Express v8.0.50727.762 (SP.050727-7600) for the record.

http://www.megaupload.com/?d=32UPNYC9

Be interesting to confirm if it crashes…

(timestart) #90

Microsoft Visual Studio 2005
Version 8.0.50727.762 (SP.050727-7600)
Microsoft .NET Framework
Version 2.0.50727 SP2

Installed Edition: VC Express

Exactly the same it would seem. Does twars work for Duke and co.? (Compiled it on this version.)

I haven’t tried 0.3.5 but my guess is it will give me the same error. Serenade reinstalled 0.3.3 on our custom map server, I deleted everything QWTA related, connected to it and managed to download and play it successfully.

@Timestart: I just connected to a tribes war server and downloaded the mod without any problems.

@Azuvector: I appreciate all the trouble you go through to find out what’s causing this. It might be something on your end, but I guess it’s something on our end as well. It works for some and it doesn’t work for others. That shouldn’t be ignored.

I don’t know if this is possible, but perhaps Timestart can do the same things as you did. Compile the SDK and release it under a different name.

Dr. Funkenstein

(Azuvector) #92

That might be interesting, although I suspect it’ll work. Unless Twars is like QWTA v0.3.3 and it was compiled before this issue started showing up… In which case timestar’s base compile might crash too. Interesting to try. I’d be curious to compare CRCs with timestar’s binaries vs mine, as well, especially if his work.

How I compiled the BaseETQW 1.5 SDK clean:
Opened the source solution folder in VS2005, set to Release, built it, put the resultant dll into a pk4.
exportScript ingame to dump the binary scripts.
Copied the binary script src folder into the dumped binary scripts, overwriting stuff, then running exportScript again to make sure the scripts are current. (I’ve always done this, IIRC it doesn’t compile without that little bit of weirdness.)
Built the compiled scripts.
Straight from there into the pk4, and onto megaupload. (With the binary.conf file in there too.)

I tried the running the build of base you uploaded, it didn’t work. Neither did QWTA. My own build does work and is exactly the same size as yours (though the contents is different).

game000-ts.pk4

I tried loading the libs using a little program (libload.zip) to see if Windows was producing any useful error message but it doesn’t seem to be:

> libload.exe gamex86.qwta.dll
LoadLibrary: This application has failed to start because the application configuration is incorrect. Reinstalling the application may fix this problem.

Error code: 14001

Checking the Windows error codes:

The application has failed to start because its side-by-side configuration is incorrect. Please see the application event log or use the command-line sxstrace.exe tools for more detail.

Apparently, sxstrace.exe is only available on Vista, which I don’t have.

That’s all I’ve been able to dig up for now, and Windows is making me angry

As is this…

I tried running Dependency Walker on this(Never used it before, but it’s supposedly good for this kinda thing.), looks like the same results for both our base compiles:

Be curious what kinda of readout you guys get from it, might be a different version of a dependant dll or something, maybe?

I’m still looking into things, definitely a good step in the right direction to get a specific error message out of this headache.

Be interesting to confirm if it crashes…
Hi, sorry for not posting for a few days. what a headache this is becoming.

i tested basetest.zip, and like drfunk, it crashed.

version 612 is before qwta 0.3.3? wow thats interesting indeed…

i’m not sure the twars i used to have was compiled using which version, but twars worked for me every version i tried till i gave etqw a reinstall, and now i no longer have it installed. i could go grab the current version and try it out tho.

i also believe that its something that maybe drfunk or me is doing wrong combined with something azuvector is doing. i also already have http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?familyid=200b2fd9-ae1a-4a14-984d-389c36f85647&displaylang=en installed, if that is any help at all.

dependency walker for qwta 0.3.4 and 0.3.5’s gamex86.dll.

let us know what other things u need us to test.

@drfunk: are you referring to the game000-ts.pk4, libload.zip or sxstrace.exe?

i’m gonna start reading thru those links you guys posted on the error codes and such, and try to make sense on whats going on there.

@timestart: your game000-ts.pk4 WORKS!!! :penguin::stroggtapir:
what does this mean now?

Seems like the linked msvcr80.dll is different(older).

From Duke’s screenshots, it looks like Azuvector’s builds are linking against an older MSVCR80.DLL than mine (can’t tell for sure since Azuvector’s screenshots cut the version off). When I tried running Dependency Walker here, it couldn’t even find the version qwta is linked against (even though I do have it). What’s very odd is that Azuvector must have the more recent version that my builds are linked with because baseETQW is linked against that version too.
