ET:QW - SP & Bots ???

(BR1GAND) #141

Thanks Lanz… Made your point well without making a snyde remark, I agree with everything you said basically. The last part about MP online being enough for a big player base, we can agree to disagree and Ill leave it at that.

Joe999 you just cant resist picking can you… Kinda funny… nope its just annoying.

(Joe999) #142

funny thing is that the same thing you complain about people applies to you, i wonder why you can’t realize that. best example: your last sentence. what do you think you’re doing with that?

(BR1GAND) #143

Not sure what you mean… That I can agree to disagree with someone… or that youre just annoying?

(Wils) #144

As I understand it, he’s accusing you of being a hypocrite.

(BR1GAND) #145

I dont go out of my way solely to try to be rude to ppl… Which is what Joe999 does. Am I defensive when someone tries to get personal or make a rude comment… sure you bet. Not sure that makes me hypocritical. Nothing that Joe999 has said has added anything to this issue except to harass me. Not one post.

(Wils) #146

I wouldn’t use the word ‘defensive’ to describe your language and general tone

(BR1GAND) #147

I see, maybe if you give me an example of when I used questionable language or a non-appropriate tone - Unprovoked.

(Gringo) #149

Lanz has said it all with Niall nailing home the argument. Lets not continue this thread by it being a critique of one or more people.

“Damn u Rock-um Sock-um robots, cant we all just get along?”

(Wils) #150

There’s obviously no single example - you wouldn’t have asked me for one if you thought there was, and I’m slightly disappointed by the request. While reading this thread, I noticed that most of your replies are more aggressive than the post you were replying to.

On a more constructive note, implementing VoIP isn’t comparable to adding bots/an offline mp mode to the game.

(BR1GAND) #151

Thanks for being constructive. Nice to see one of the devs weigh in on an issue. Even if its prob just to put me in my place.

So are you saying ET:QW will have VoIP then?

(Nail) #152

geez, I hope this kettle boils dry soon
what people have been saying is, an off the shelf existing voip program is easier to implement than a brand new AI bot program that will satisfy such discriminating users as yourself with the capabilities and waypoint system that seems a requirement for your offline gaming experience.
With that said, there ain’t gonna be no bots at game release no matter how much you *complain (*other word was much better)
If there’s voip, it’s probably because it was a much simpler addition and possibly something more people would actually use, not for me to judge, I’m just happy they’re making a new game for me to play
k
/end rantish sota thing

(SCDS_reyalP) #153

Several interviews and game mag previews have stated that there will be integrated voice coms.

(BR1GAND) #154

So anyway I wonder how much an “off the shelf” VoIP cost to intergrate into a game? What are the licensing and royalty issues? Wonder if it cost more than a decent bot coder… Thanx Nail for keeping this issue alive. :fiesta:

(Wils) #155

The costs for implementing VoIP are probably an order of magnitude cheaper than the overall costs of implementing bots for a game (hiring a programmer, desk space in the office, pc hardware, game design implications, additional work for the level design team, etc).

(Ifurita) #156

As Wils said, it’s much more than just a decent bot coder. Because bots interact with everything in the game, implementing bots draws resources from everyone else on the team. Just from the mapping perspective, you need a workable bot, need to plot waypoints, improve bot, improve way points, fix areas of the map which are problematic for bots, yada yada yada. If you ever did any mapping for RTCW SP or Quake, bots don’t navigate all maps equally.

(RX|marrafakka) #157

No bots. Bots are a bad idea. If you want to play at a LAN, join a clan and go compete. It’s the best advice available.

(Ifurita) #158

Personally, I’d love to see good, solid bots who can replicate MP gameplay. However, I’m not willing to make the expected trade offs that I expect I’d have to make (CPU load, time, $, etc) to get them.

(Gringo) #159

Lets face the facts, u cant make bots as smart as humans without going down the terminator path. People who want bots must realise they are trying to doom us all!

(Dazzamac) #160

True, effective bots require proper AI and the second we develop that they’ll kill us all
