Do you want female models in the game?

(SCDS_reyalP) #81

Many modern weapons can be configured either way, while others can simply be used as is. The right-hand oriented semi-autos that I’ve shot were only slightly inconvenient. I recall my grandfather saying when he was in the army (WWII) they tied his left hand down until he learned to do things “right”, but things have changed a bit since then

I would love to see diversity of characters in games (and ET:QWs “earth fighting for it’s life” scenario certainly lends itself to that) but ultimately, it’s gameplay that matters.

When female models are included, they also tend promote another set of stereotypes. Very few games have the guts to portray women with with physically possible figures :moo:

sooooo … are you saying that Crackhor by Paul Steed is not realistic?

Let’s face it, 90% of people wanting female models are MEN, who want to see naked ladies on servers (with help of some custom skins).

SRSLY GUYZ WAT ABOUT THE STROGG NEEDZ FEMALE MODELS FOR THEM 2 SO THEY DUN FEEL LEFT OUT!1111

I’m saying no to female models because reasons so far are either dumb or quasi political/feministic.

ET:QW is a war game FPS. It is not Real life. A model has been chosen and will be stuck with and has the same voice. A pure design decision. The reason for sticking with 1 model and 1 voice is for the technical side trust me, every bit of performance you can boost is worth it. The next is that catering for one minority will mean the avalanche effect will incur basically entailing every bastard will come and spit out what should be included in the game because it happened for others.

It’s a game. If by some weird psychological urge you have to play a female character make your own game or plays the Sims.

(SniperSteve) #85

By that logic, ET:QW will only be a success if 50% of the playerbase are flesh eating cyborg aliens.

Not that there’s anything wrong with that :D
<3

EDIT: Yes, go play the sims if you voted yes.

Each GDF seems to be a different model, sounds aren’t that big of an issue to make and add. I don’t see why altering one of the classes to a female would imply more memory issues. The memory issues quoted to me were based on adding a female option for each class, which is not an option at this point. It is not difficult to edit the mesh to add a bit of female look to it, reskin, and make some sounds. That takes 3 people at the same time. A mod could do it with a modeler in less than 3 days, but then not as many would have or play it just as in Quake 4.

Some of you say there is no reason to have a female model, whereas from my point of view there is no reason NOT to have it. It is a flaw and mistake from the developer to over look such a thing, and it should be remedied while there is still time.

O/T To my fav hens, point taken, I apologize

Of course there is a reason to have a female model, not in the core game though. And altering one class WILL WORK only if you play by class, not gender. Every class is important and making one of them female would totally take away the teamplay element. Let’s say covert ops is female. Server has females, or guys who pick female characters for some reason. The whole team would be covert ops/infiltrators. Pretty stupid there.

It’s a game. Who cares. id games are moddable you know. Don’t let quakewars merge with real life. Keep it in the quake universe.

The objective for quakewars is teamwork and its type of gameplay. NOT eyecandy.

In wolf ET. The axis medic model is by far my favorite. I play engineer or field ops most of the time, or any class that is needed, and play both sides. Why? Because I’m not looking at the model. I’m looking at the abilities and what is needed. I rarely play medic because so many are medic. When I play axis (defense), I normally pick engies because they are needed. I still pick them despite having that ugly mole on his chin. His mustache is cool though. Also the hairdo for the field ops looks plain ugly as if he keeps a comb with him and gels it. Doesn’t bug me there.

This isn’t like previous quake games where you can pick a female model and won’t affect the team. A class has certain abilities and picking the certain class just because she is female is not how the game is meant to be played.

I checked all the GDF models. Looks the same to me, with added stuff.

There. Many reasons there NOT to have it.

I’m really hoping that you don’t actually think people are that stupid, that a good sized portion of the playing population would toss the game aspect aside just to play a female model?

Hopefully they aren’t. Besides, the game is basically done now. Models are set. Why create more models just for this one occasion? Maybe SD or nerve’s RTCW2MP will have female models if you asked them before they developed their models.

I should have said this. WHO CARES. Just play the game.

i think the woman that wrote the article would really appreciate something like that being done, and if you mean custom skins you also mean a mod, so if you dont want to see nipples you dont load the mod, simple enough

Last question, could someone explain to me what difference your model makes when every one has the same view, this is first person not third person. I can see the difference in a third person SP game, but not one where only other people can see your model and you can’t, except maybe in demos ? Women have played FPS games since they came out, if they want, they use female names. Lots prefer not to, mostly I think because of the “Gurlz hehehe wanna cyber” aspect of online gaming. Other than the fact that I appear male on the internet, without actually knowing me you have no idea of my gender. This is the internet, it’s anonymous for a reason…people want it that way

To test this, set up xbox live and play halo 2 with stereotypical 12 year olds. Say you are female in game, and record their behavior. Then say you are a dude then record their behavior.

I’ve heard of females playing halo 2. No complaints from them. So who the hell cares about female models. Probably only a small percentage care anyway. Even though you have a dude “outer shell”, you are still a female inside. While you are sitting at your seat near the computer screen, you don’t suddenly turn into a dude just because the character you play is a dude.

I play allies field ops in wolf ET and I don’t think I’m black.

Just think of it this way. You are controlling an existing character in the GDF or strogg army. That character isn’t you. It is that nameless character you play as, like the doomguy or halo master chief.

There are females willing to play as dudes and they don’t throw a fit over that. If you want female models, then go do a protest to the SD offices complete with an army and picket signs.

Don’t forget that all models must be the same size and proportion just to be fair. Look at Tank Jr and Slash from Quake 3. You can hit Tank Jr, and miss. You can miss Slash by a bit, then score a hit. All Q3 models are based of sarge and we all know tank jr is larger than sarge while slash is way smaller.

What’s the point, you can’t see yourself, you can only see other models for other players and if they happen to be female, it will probably be a dude inside anyway. Why not just make them all dudes? I guess covert ops makes the great female because of the slim design and easier concealment behind narrow objects.

You’ve all got too tied up with politics to actually realise what the REAL problem is with female models.

OK, Case 1: Equivalency, player can choose either female or male for each class.
This is really a bad idea. Everyone will choose females, and not because of their gender, but because they will be smaller and harder to see and harder to hit. And yes this makes a difference, any edge is worth using.

Case 2: One or more classes is female.
This avoids the gameplay/hardware issues, but would have to be restricted to certain classes. I’m thinking medic is best as females don’t have the same raw strength, which is the core reason why they aren’t on front lines in armies. A large gun weighs a lot and it would look a bit stupid with a girl picking up a gun that weights 50% as much as she does, nevermind fire it. And you have to remember that men are just better overall in terms of athletics. Faster, stronger, better reactions, better aim. This isn’t sexism, it’s just the way things are, and if etqw was all female classes, it would sound stupid.

Theres far too much Politicaly Correct crap in day to day lives. This is a game a fantasy and it should be fun without having to use female models simply to satisfy an unjustified belief in equality.
(ayatollah) #95

In 2065 all the women are dead and the men are hermaphrodites who inseminate themselves. All without the moodswings. The world is a much better place, except for the fact noone does the dishes, they just chuck them out and buy new ones. They have the money to do this because there are no women to hold them back.

You know its true.

(BR1GAND) #96

In the future the women will all look like men and there will be no need for men as all the women will be manish clones of themselves. In fact if you kill one of the shemen she will likely be recloned in a matter of seconds. The stroggs hate this and have chosen to envade earth.

(kamikazee) #97

It’s not a matter of seconds, it’s governed by the master spawn counter.

(signofzeta) #98

I think this statement is the one to close the case. How “unopen” some people are.

This is the quake universe, not our universe. If you are comparing real life to ETQW, then strogg will really be invading earth. In the quake universe, women aren’t allowed in the army until events of quake 2. Done. Case closed.

(M8DNanite) #99

7 pages in 48 hours, you guys talk as much as women now  Dont invite them here or the forum will explode.

It would be interesting to hear from SD the ET design history of that female class. In Bonus DVD?

(SKaREO) #100

I agree with both sides of this argument.

Of course, its in the future, what if men are so weak and women are the warriors of the future? It really doesn’t matter, does it? But I do think developers should be considering the growing population of female gamers who might want to play a female character in their favorite online game.

What if all the models were females? Would the male gamers complain? Well that’s a different story, but I think you get the idea of equality and fairness.
