worries

it’s also a more anonymous form of communication, and one which some people actually did abuse in quake wars… unlike voip.

(tokamak) #102

Lol, a message warning you about the typical multiplayer gamers the first time you start online.

“Why won’t you lean back on the couch and tell me what the bad man told you on voice chat, Tokamak? There there, it’s okay to cry. Yes… let it all out.”

(coolstory) #104

Voip should be on by default. Just have an easy mute button global and specific. Also idk about the quake communities but most people playing source games have and use mics.

(DouglasDanger) #105

I heard there is only one game mode. I don’t know if that is true or not, but it is a worrisome thing to hear.

(tokamak) #106

It would definitely be worrisome to gamers who are used to stale game modes like deathmatch, team deathmatch and capture the flag. But in Brink the objective modes allow for a huge variety in the games. If you look at ETQW or W:ET, each map can be seen as a game-mode on itself, the experience is just that different.

(DouglasDanger) #107

No, a game with only two different ways to play a map will not have a long life.

(Voxie) #108

Counter-Strike begs to differ.

Speaking from personal experience, past Splash Damage games have had very high standards when it comes to map quality and replayability; I wouldn’t worry at all.
And, as Tokamak stated, each map contains several different elements making them more akin to an assortment of classical game modes rolled into one packaged.

(tokamak) #109

Indeed, it’s the difference between generic maps with slightly different rule sets and unique maps each having their own scenario. Give me the latter any time.

(SockDog) #110

The point isn’t that you necessarily need different game modes to add longevity to the game. It is more that having a single game mode means the game will only ever be one type of game and that one type of game may not hold every player’s attention. Brink may be a roaring success if it captures the imaginations of gamers, it may also fall into immediate obscurity if it doesn’t (see ETQW).

You can look down your nose at some of the old gameplay modes all you want but you can’t deny they have appeal and I’d rather have a choice to play something different within Brink than go looking for that fix in another game completely.

(ED209) #111

I love ET:QW to bits, and the maps quality for the ones that were released are fantastic… we still play them… however other people might prefer different game modes… whatever BRINK comes up with, it needs to grab the gamer by the… erm… joystick

Deathmatch captures gamer’s desires the way McDonald’s captures people’s tastes. At least for console games, the population in even the most barebones objective playlists is always way less than it is in TDM. I absolutely can’t stand TDM, which brings me to my worry: that the console gamers will buy this game just like they buy every other FPS and play it for a week before hating it and buying bulletstorm or bodycount or some other trash. Seriously, I hate console gamers.

(Apples) #113

May i suggest you to buy a PC

(SockDog) #114

LOL

@Captain K
I find it offensive to equate DM to the like of McDonalds (I think CoD is far more fitting in that respect). As a game mode it gives players the ability to be totally selfish and ultimately be an undisputed winner of the match. I’d rather people had the option to load Brink and play DM when they want that than either not play Brink at all or worse, play DM during an objective match.

I’d also like this stuff there at the start so that everyone has access to it rather than limiting it to a mod or optional DLC.

…ZIiiiiiiiNG!!!

(light_sh4v0r) #118

You have no idea, honestly. Objective gamemode in SD games is by far the deepest and most diverse gamemode in existance and can attract you for many many hours. In fact, after playing this (team) deathmatch seems rather bland.

(Nail) #119

the learning curve on SD’s initial game W:ET was weeks if not months long, we still fill a W:ET server with the original 6 maps and no XP save mods, just ETPro for game fixes and a lua mod for refs and admins, 7 years on a single mode proves it can work if done correctly

[edit add] I do like other game modes like KOTH and CTF, but I have games that do those well, I don’t want my ET styled games to cater to other modes, I like niche games

(tokamak) #120

W:ET is playable for years with just 6 maps and one mode.
