Wolfenstein: Enemy Territory's compatibility to Windows7

(Saadi) #1

Hi,

Before reading the german heise.de news I heard about an XP-Modus for Windows7, and I thought that this may allows playing W:ET on the future Win7.

But as I read the german news, it says that the XP-Mode will only be avaiable for Windows7 packs above Windows 7 Home so just Windows 7 Professional, Enterprise or Ultimate.

Moreover it will not support games or 3-D applications, its made firstly for companies, not for Home-users.

Will there be a change of playing W:ET on Win7?

If evenbalance just release an update it’s possible

(Salteh) #3

Do you have problems with w:et and windows 7?
Some people in the office played it on windows 7 about two weeks ago.

Why we were not invited, we are still waiting to be able to play against Splash Damage.

I already asked PB if they support win7. this was the answer

So it has to work normally…

I did play both etqw and w:et under win7, but i’m not using that OS anymore as i find no need to upgrade so i uninstalled it.

I play et in win7 without problem, my et runs much sweet only sometimes i got a strange lags i cant identify yet

(Gimpsta) #8

the strange lags are called “a hangover”

:stuck_out_tongue:

(zbzero) #9

Did you find any way to fix this Hangover??

(Nail) #10

I use a custom mod called “Hair of the Dog”

I build and repair PC’s and have been running Windows 7 on my other pc. I thought of trying W:ET and it worked fine no problems at all and now that Even Balance will support the OS there shouldn’t be a problem? Played all versions of the game 2.55, 2.56, 2.60 and 2.60b all with success even mods were no problem…

So for me it is a big thumbs up!

ok but what about the multicores?
I heard many people having problems when playing: pc lags etc.
Solving it is another topic…

One big issue i have to mention is playing in windowed mode just doesn’t work. I know some who prefer playing at 99% screen size just to get easy access to messengers and whatnot, but fps is decreased to about 10% on window mode. I did turn off all possible gfx junk and whatnot, but it never did work.

For multicores, i did a thorough benchmark on ET:QW and HL2:EP2(first dx game that came into my mind). ET:QW threadning worked perfectly and all other apps with multicore support(ex winrar compression benchmark) The only thing i did notice is a general 1-3% less framerate for win7, except for hl2:ep2 in dx10 mode where win7 did score 0.2 more fps. But these differences are so tiny.

Also, a small moude-lag was noticed in ET:QW, something i was unable to fix, but it is unnoticeable for most gamers.

For now, i just don’t see any reason to upgrade as i get the same stuff right now but on a time-tested package.

Windows 7 has some extra features than the Vista counterpart… One is that Windows 7 uses less memory than the hogging Vista but Windows 7 uses less. One of the ways it works, in games espiecly, is that it uses more of the GPU ( Graphics card ) on board memory. So the more you have maybe better?? I was thinking if you have a lower sized GPU you may get lag of some form in games?? Just a thought…
Another feature of Windows 7 is Hard Disk Managment. This allows the HDD to almost stop spinning to use less power. Maybe by doing this the data needed to be accessed could be slower just to save on power? It could also have an effect on FPS gaming because of the massive ammounts of graphics and rendering in todays games?

Just a couple of thoughts on Windows 7 that may have an effect on FPS games and lag etc… In time we will see updates and realease notes on updates etc… But as for now Windows 7 is new, as we all know, so everything has to start somewhere…

HDD + GPU = ???

(YourFather_CZ) #16

I haven’t noticed any compatibility (neither any PB errors) problems even if I run Win 7 in virtual machine.

agree on that…

(zbzero) #18

Youre using windows 7 xp mode right?
I create a new partition on my HD and installed windows xp to run ET, but i dont like that, either the way to run it in xp mode, in my opinion everything need run in the same OS.

(Psygnosis) #19

ZBzero you could try this if you havn’t already???

This is how I set up ET + PB on Windows 7 and it works fine now.

Now do this for ET. Just thought I would let you know…

INSTRUCTIONS:

  1. Right click on the Enemy Territory shortcut on desktop and click properties.

  2. Set your admin privileges to full control for Enemy Territory and make sure you have “run as administrator” checked.

  3. Right click on the shortcut on the desktop and click open file location and then do the same admin privileges on the actual ET.exe

  4. Last most important step update under Windows 7 PunkBuster, do it manually.

Go to this link and download PBSetup:
http://www.evenbalance.com/index.php?page=pbsetup.php

Install it and select your game and update Punkbuster through that program.

That’s it!!! It works flawlessly for me! I hope it works for you!

Psy. ( Have fun )
P.S. What was the error code you received???

Me? If so… I use Win XP Pro and if it’s needed (e.g. customer support) I use Win 7 Ultimate in virtual machine… like on that screenshot.

I’ve installed Win 7 then I’ve turned off `User Account Control’ (other settings are defualt) then I’ve installed WolfET + patches. I haven’t updated PB manually and I don’t run WolfET with admin privileges and everything works fine for me.
