Wolfenstein: Enemy Territory 2 - any chances?

(donmichelangelo) #101

If you wanna sell a game based on idtech3 you need to buy a license anyway.

But releasing a game under the GPL wont cost anything as long as you dont sell it, only if you want to make $$ with it.

You are not allowed to redistribute the ET content. So the asssets/content that was shipped along with ET cant be used in a GPL game. At least you cant package it like that. People would need to download ET and then they would need to unzip the content into you game directory.

idtech3 is gpl, you dont need to buy any license, unless you want to use a closed specially licensed idtech3. gpl’ed idtech3 is free. The GPL allows commercial offerings, as long as you make the source code available too. Here, only the engine code is GPL, game content would be needed.

Got it, think it’d be much better to have specially done content in this game replacing the old et one if thats the et license.

(king_troll) #104

it says it somewhere in the text files, or old idsoftware site. but to charge per number with idtech4 they would have to release quakewars engine. crytek 3 full dev kit is being released in the summer, and any other idtech4 source stands no chance of being used with UDK and crytek 3 having full dev kits

(etwolfmod) #105

Well, only because most people like udk or crytek’s sdk, doesnt indicate id tech code wont be released. crytek’s full kit will be closed source like udk, it’ll have a license much like udk’s. Maybe that’s good, and what some need. They both have better documentation and support, since there’s a commercial interest that both epic and crytek have on them. id doesnt have any interest in GPL code, and they dont support it either, it’s only a gesture to the community. But the community has done a great work on supporting and maintaining GPL’d id code.

(king_troll) #106

id have a history of employing people who can work out the code themselves, id will probaly never release idtech4 without having all megatexture patented code in a seperate precompiled driver or binary, which then they should release all sources

(SockDog) #107

I was kinda suggesting that Bethesda actually did this and it’d be stellar if SD was the developer who took it on as a smaller, breather, project.

I’m all for community mods and remakes but damn I’m still waiting on Black Mesa. I’m willing to pay for a dedicated developer to get this done sooner.

I doubt bethesda/zenimax would allocate resources into a sequel to an old free online game. It’s up to the community to make a sequel to et.

(Shanks) #109

I hate to be the bearer of bad news guys but there is a sequel, it’s called Enemy Territory: Quake Wars. Hell it even carries the Enemy Territory moniker. Just because it has a different setting and isn’t exactly like W:ET doesn’t mean it ISN’T a sequel. It’s very similar when you get down to it. You mod out the vehicles (well some were nice to have like the little buggies) and make symmetrical teams and you have a game that is almost exactly like W:ET.

No what you guys are looking for is a Wolfenstein game like RtCW and W:ET and not the horrible 2009 game but let’s face it, that game tried to be W:ET but it just wasn’t right.

(SockDog) #110

Sony has pushed through several HD remakes of older titles. I don’t see why making a budget priced HD remake of a proven popular game/games, with some added features would be an impossible proposition for Bethesda to consider.

Not knocking the community making such a game though I just expect it would take a lot longer to come to fruition.

the teams weapons are sym balanced in this mini mod http://www.splashdamage.com/forums/showthread.php?t=24436&page=2 | firerates/kickback/zoom/recoil/everything

just put the pk4 in any folder for it to work, better with the pro comp mod

(Shownie) #112

I have to disagree about QUAKE Wars is a sequel to W: ET. It is clearly part ofthe Quake series.

What we could call a sequel to W: ET are all the mods made by the community. I think NQ is closest to what could be called W: ET 2. And what if all popular mods went together to make the one and only W: ET 2… that would be a success!

(king_troll) #113

remove the vehicles and quakewars gameplay is exactly the same as wolf, you just have to play a few rounds on volanco to find that out, its 99% the same beach raid map in wolf

We have a TON of active coders who are willing to work on the engine and game logic to be a great successor to ET but we’re seriously lacking in the art department. What we need are good 2d artists, good modellers, some good mappers, and a few good sound guys. If we had that then we’d have no problems getting this project off the ground. The problem is that these guys are virtually non-existent on these forums. Where are we going to find them?

(Nail) #115

what do you need for audio ?

(Pegazus) #116

We were thinking about that aswell and found it to be a good opportunity.

(Shownie) #117

Even if we remove the vehicles it is still NOT W: ET. QUAKE Wars is a complete new scene. It may have simalir gameplay as W: ET, but it aint the same game.

Coders is here, yes. But they are all part of some MOD or Engine project. You say there is no Artist, nor Mappers, nor Modelers here. There is a TON of awesome mappers here. Also very talented modelers, such as BackSnip3 and Kic. Me for instance is a 2D Artist. Can’t tell the skill level, but it aint that poor.

When ETFrag will be released someone can tell what skill level I have. Maybe you have found ONE 2d artist. But I am sure here is more than me. Clearly we might just ask them to reveal themself. Offer them the oppartunity to partcipitate to a new project.

I would say
We need one team for the engine part. I think best would be to create a new official patch. So we don’t need to hunt for a new engine, id Tech 3 is great. Can use a little bit of tweaking.

Also we need one team for the game code. Call it a mod or whatever, there can be awesome result if those big Mods could co-work.

Then thirdly we need a team which makes new official maps, because we need something that follows this Project, six standard maps is just poor :stuck_out_tongue:

Maybe anothe team for the UI and 2D/3D Arts. ET could use a serious update in this area.

These are my sentences (:

We were thinking of the idea of a total conversion.

(king_troll) #119

quakewars volcano map just needs some barbwire on the beach, and breach entry points changed, the rest of the map is the same as wolf, if you play it a few times in a row, gameplay feels just like wolf

if you TC wolf, you should still have some vehicles if not big turrets and cannons that are static vehicles

(Shanks) #120

So we don’t use any of ET’s original assets.

@Shownie: Are you capable of making hi-res textures? Would these mappers be willing to compile their maps in darkradiant?
