Wolfenstein: Enemy Territory 2 - any chances?

(Shownie) #61
They could just overhaul it, then ask THE COMMUNITY what kind of new things would they like to see in W:ET 2.
Still WW2, still Allies vs Nazis, still the xp leveling system (but client side, not server side), same weapons with a few more made, still same maps plus new ones, still the same classes, etc.
Seriously, same old W:ET with big changes, but it shouild still the same way.
I completly agree with you

(DrpPlates) #62

W:ET2- sure, i’d go for that… only if it was for PC, if console wants it, it can be ported to them… after Brink, i’ll never buy a PC game that is ported from console without a Beta or Demo so i can test it out first

Giving ideas is great, but we should show the developers that we are serious about this. We could make a small group of community developers (coders, scripters, mappers, 3D designers, artists) who would be able to show what the community actually expects from Wolfenstein.
We could use the UDK to showcase our work.

It would get us a lot closer to our goal than just giving ideas ever could.

(Nail) #64

I don’t know about Unreal engine, I would think something like Unity might be better

(crazyfoolish) #65

You would have my money.

(Pegazus) #66

Also, It has been said that id Tech 4 engine will be released for the public this year.

@Nail Thanks for the suggestion. Will check it out.

(kamikazee) #67

The chances of the Brink or ET:QW sources being released are pretty slim. That means you’ll have to rebuild Doom 3 to work performantly in multi-player (original Doom 3 DM only allowed 8 players) and make it work for larger maps.

(Pegazus) #68

Good statement Kamikazee. However I was hoping that id Tech 4 engine release might get the community more active with the subject in hand and eventually the developers of SD interested aswell.

Currently we do not have a game engine to work on, so there are two things we can do: Gather ideas and make assets for the game itself.

Edit: One possability would be to use Quake Wars itself.

John D. Carmack release his engines to GPL when the code base is around 5 years old. So this might just be true, and if so, very good for the community

(Nail) #70

Carmack said he would petition ZeniMax to release tech4 when Rage is released, don’t hold your breath, I highly doubt ZeniMax will allow it

(Pegazus) #71

Rage seems to be using the id Tech5 engine. Perhaps Carmack talked about that instead?

(Nail) #72

nope, he was definately reffering to idtech4, idtech5 is totally locked down

(king_troll) #73

except no1 cares for d3 idtech4 its 100% beta and complete rubbish effects systems etc, they need to release Q4 engine as idtech4 GPL

(Nail) #74

it’s the same engine, we’re not talking about game souce, we’re talking about engine, idtech4 = idtech4

(king_troll) #75

they are all just snapshots of a working engine on its way to idtech6

d3 is a stable version you could run a basic high poly game on
q4 has a new particle system and can handle bigger megatextures and some other random stuff
qw and bigger megatexturs still and tools to make megatextures, and a few new options on particles and new sound code, atmospherics, and new file types that make idtech5 ā€œimpossibleā€ to mod without releasing a SDK

(Nail) #76

it doesn’t really matter which iteration, Bethesda will never allow Carmack to GPL idtech4

I think Unity would suit the needs and there may be a sympathiser around here somewhere

(king_troll) #77

they will, and id wont have to bother wasting time on quake 5 after the fail of quakelive

q4 engine is just cleaner code, and the driver is abit better, its still crap and old Vs quakewars idtech4

(Nail) #78

well at least you’re living up to your name

(Shownie) #79

Someone explain to me who has the full rights of id Tech engines… they are made by Carmack (from id Software)… what has ZeniMax with the engine to do?

I need someone to explain to me, it all sounds very fuzzy …

Carmack sold id software to Zenimax, Zenimax acquired the rights to all id games, including wolfensteinm quake, doom. They have the rights to the engines too. But, they know that id released their older tech with gpl. That is why they allowed id release wolf under the gpl recently.
