Wolf: ET Game Freeze Problem

(Karma) #1

I am currently experiencing a problem in ET where I will play for 30 seconds or so after joining a server and I will then get a hard freeze, the sound stops the screen freezes and no mouse/keyboard input goes through (no ctrl-alt-delete, etc. all I can do is reboot or hold down the off switch.)

System Specs:
AMD 2700+
ASUS 87N8X Deluxe NFORCE 2
NFORCE 2 AUDIO
ATI AIW 9700 Pro
512 DDR Ram
Windows XP Home Edition (SP1)

I have the lastest video (Catalyst 3.4), and Mobo/Audio/Network Drivers (All from NVIDIA)

Things I have already tried:
-Did a fresh install of wolf et, didn’t touch any settings etc. No help.
-Played many other games, such as half-life, ravenshield… etc. All work fine.
-Ran 3dMark03, passed normal with results similar to tests I had done before problem occured.
-Ran Norton ANTiVirus Full System Scan (zzz boring) just to be sure.

NOTE: I did not used to have this problem, at a point I could play wolf et fine for hours on end. Then one day I just loaded it up and it froze… rebooted… and it froze… left off for half an hour… and it froze. I can’t think of anything I changed that would have impacted it… except it ran fine before I changed the clock speeds on my 9700 and installed/ran 3dMark03 and didn’t work after (I ran it again afterwards… see above.) Someone has already suggested it but I am almost sure I didn’t fry my card overclocking - I only boosted it up by about 15 - my case has four fans, and it was on a cold rainy day. After I experienced a problem with wolf et, I turned the clock settings back down to default (and even tried lower.) I can still run all games I could before (aside from wolf et) just like normal, no loss of fps/freezes/anything. I also ran 3dMark03 again and it worked fine with a final score just a lil lower than what it was overclocked.

If I missed out on any details just ask… this is all I can think of right now. Thanks for any help,
Karma

Solution: type \pb_system 1 in the console before starting a game
It worked for me

How about this…and your not gonna like it.

Me?

I use Intel only. MOBO’s and Processors.

Neighbor? AMD hound.

HIM? Lockups.

ME? No prollems at all. Zero. Zilch.

He installed it on his P3 system…no prollems.

DUnno if its relevant, just a little fyi…

finally \pb_system 1 didnt work for me, still freezing.

(GRouZER) #9

did you entered the command before you started a game?
otherwise try running the memory tester, memtest86:
http://www.memtest86.com

if you have a motherboard with a via chipset, download the newest chipset drivers.

Yes, i entered it before choosing a server, i tried 2 times, the first it freezed when mission ends, the second it freezed when i dclick on the server to join.

It sometimes locks on me when I press right-alt to view the top shooters.

(MojoFury) #14

I’ve started getting the same thing. Only it lets me play for a lot longer than 30 seconds. Last night I couldn’t complete 2 consecutive maps without freezing, so on average it would happen about 20-30 minutes into a session.

…Except once it happened at the id Splash Screen when starting up!

Intel P4 1.7G
512MB RAM
Win2k
Nvidia Geforce 4 Ti 4600
Turtle Beach/Santa Cruz sound

The thing I can’t figure out is why I was able to play without problems for so long, and now only recently have encountered this freezing thing. Was there an automatic download or server-side patch released recently that maybe behind this?

Oh, and /pb_system 1 didn’t help. Neither did reinstalling.

Also, in case it’s server-side - the servers I was on were Frosted East and Central, and Amish-something or other…

Thats what had happened me too, i’ve also install the new Via drivers and ET still freezing.

(inigoth) #16

Well, it seems my problem its solved.
It was the heat, today i got the freezing error and when i reboot i noticed my micro was at 76ºC, so i opened the cpu box and placed a fan directly over the cpu, temperature was establed at 64ºC and i could play 3 hours without any error.

i checked the temperature with MBM5:

Thats not normal to do. I think you should spend 10 or 20 pounds on a few fans and a decent CPU fan then you will expect temperatures to fall dramtically. My CPU was at 60C when at full processing capabilites and now its only 50C in hot weather. All I added was an exhaust fan and a chassis fan on the front and back.

(inigoth) #18

Yes, i know i need a new fan for my cpu. But this solution worked fine to play today

Same Problem here…the game freezes sometimes in the game. About every half hour…

I havent got that problem with any other program. It’s only with RTCW-ET. When the PC freezes i have a movable windows mouse only visible in a field of the size of an typical yes/no windows pop-up.

When i klick at a specific point in that field the reapeating game sound (it got stuck) turns on and of…no chance with alt+return or alt+ctrl+del…

Hope you find a solution for this :frowning:

My system:
p4 1,3
gf2mx400
512 mb ram
ac97 on-board sound
winME

Anyway you built a great game! I love it and keep up the good work  .

ok guys another solution

i have tryed much … very much thing from Underclocking (3:30 Hours wiht out an crash) to “\pb_system 1” (in normal Clocked settings 10 minuts and than crash) but nothing realy help´s to my

Last night i have Updated my XP much new Security patches, Explorer Updates and a new Version of MS .NET Framework v 1.1 and DX9.0a

What can i say … it works (for my) i have played the whole Evening with out props … ok sometimes the System hangs for “a part of a secound” (like a very short lag) and then the game continiuos.

I doupt that any Security patch or Explorer Update was the Solution, but i
think MS .NET Framework Update and/or DX9.0a fixed the Prop

cya all and i hope that helps you all
