Wolf: ET Game Freeze Problem

(elektronisch) #21

/r_ext_compile_vertex_array 0
should fix it for ATI bug in drivers. i found the bug, for the linux drivers it fixed it aleast.

I am also getting this problem. As alot of others have mentioned this only happens while playing ET. I play RTCW, UT, UT2k3, BF1942, HL, etc all with no problems. ET will randomly lockup. Usually I notice it’s after I respawn, but that is just a majority of the times I do lockup or it just closes itself. I have ran mem tests and have came up with nothing. haved tried the \pb_system 1 b4 entering a server all with no luck.

Anyone with lockups that runs PowerStrip, try closing PowerStrip and its background process.
To stop it from automatically loading into the background on startup, you can either go to the Start menu, then Run, then type msconfig and press enter, then go to the Startup tab, then uncheck pstrip, then restart; or you can probably disable automatic startup from somewhere within PowerStrip’s options.
Or, you can just uninstall PowerStrip.

This was annoying the hell out of me, I’m glad I found out my cause.

(Sniper342) #24

oh, and my PowerStrip was always set to default clock speeds, so mine wasn’t an overheat or overclock issue either

I think it may actually be something dealing with Punkbuster and PowerStrip’s hotkeyed gamma adjustment things that run in the background, even though I never actually adjusted gamma in this game, or something like that

i never tried pb_system 1

If you have a freeze/hang problem it could be the ATI catalyst drivers 3.4 and 3.5.
The game rarely hangs with 3.4 but when i installed 3.5 it hanged a lot, so try installing a older video driver.

I think you missed a “d” letter in the word “compiled”.

“/r_ext_compiled_vertex_array 0” is the correct command.

thanks for the tip mate. it totally solved my crashing problem.
the only thing i used powerstrip for was to brighten up games; there was no over-clocking or whatnot going on. But powerstrip for some reason caused this incessant crashing.
i removed powerstrip a week ago and havent had a crash since  since all i used powerstrip for was gamma, i found a small utility that does the same thing and uses less resources in the process. it’s freeware and it’s called GAPA.
If you are experiencing the “looping sound freeze” crash and use powerstrip, give gapa a go and you will be most satisfied :drink:

I had the et.exe crash occuring randomly during play.
I solved it by raising Vcore .05V to 1.7V. All my crashes went away.

Right now I’m getting the game problems, I either get a complete and rather effing sudden reboot or a nice little windows Xp error box telling me ET.exe has encountered a problem.

Now I know for a 600% fact that I have no heat problems (8 fans can’t be wrong), my AMD 3000+ runs at 43 degrees C under load and the board hits 50 to 52 degrees C. these are well within acceptable limits.

I have started doing the “\pb_system 1” thingy and so far all seems well (but I have a lot more testing to do). Another thing I did was remove that Nvidia “change your vid card settings on the fly” thing that sits on your taskbar as apparently ET doesn’t like powerstrip and it’s a similar thing. I was just wondering which of the .cfg files I could put the “\pb_system 1” in so it is done automatically whenever I load up ET.

Thanks people  .

p.s. oh yeah with regard doing the “pb_system 1” thing I didn’t know it was an issue with Nvidia cards which I read on these ET problem forums :

Ive noticed a consistency in the problems people are having. People are able to play all other games w/out problems except ET.

I helped a clanmate out last nite who was having this same issue - he updated his BIOS which had fixes for ram stability/compatibility as well as a fix for nvidia cards -

I also had him change some BIOS options - check to see if AGP Fast Writes is enabled - depending on your system, you may want this enabled or disabled - so if youre having problems, see what this is set to - change it and see how it goes. Theres other AGP related settings in most BIOS’s, prolly worth looking into -

theres a link to a guide that explains BIOS settings in laymens terms for those reluctant to change BIOS settings

Oh yeah, has anyone ever considered the driver for their network card, my netgear FA311 (lump of shite) on my old board would only stop rebooting the PC when I loaded old NT/win 2000 drivers.

This card has now been placed in my new Nforce 2 board and the old drivers thing done, but it’s not rock solid anymore like in the old board as other internet programs will cause the net card to do the reboot thing and I’m wondering if it is giving my ET grief as well (it often rebooted (well at least before the pb_system 1)).

So I have now removed the netgear FA311 (lump of shite) and am testing the on board Nforce MCP network thingymajig.

Just thought you should know, if it helps anyone I’ll be happy. .

(Riftgarde) #32

Has anyone ever considered it could be the game itself?

(DrGav) #33

Conversely, I ran 3.4 on my AMD since ET was released, not one crash until yesterday. In fact had TWO lockups yesterday. Immediately i upgraded to 3.5. Seems ok so far…

Ok, so…I find it soooo interesting reading all these posts on DA FREEEEEEZE and yeah it is a MF  .
I thought I had got rid of all this with the release ET as I had DA FREEZE/INFINATE SOUND LOOP when playing RTCW for 18 months.

I’d like to address a few issues but I am quite sure that everyone is different. It is very obvious to me that it is indeed PUNK BUSTER that is responsible and it seems to clash with your GFX Drivers for some reason.

I really dont think it has anything to do with removing sound cards from a pci slot or your firewall …or your virus program…or…your heating…or your xyz it is PB and Das ist Das Herr Hoffman simple and plain. The next move for me (personally) tonight, will be the good old /pb_sv_disable and see by disabling PB we shall see. Other than that my friend FCUK nose. So I will go and ask him and let you all know lol
