Why Ranked is unpopular, and how we can make it popular

(Kingsley) #41

You’re obviously not a fan of Dexter if you didn’t get the Surprise joke

(Amerika) #42

@Kingsley and @Jostabeere If both of you don’t stop your feud and flagging war I’ll stop it for the both of you.

(Terminal_6) #43

Well, it’s only a matter of time before all threads devolve into memes. The actual discussion probably isn’t going to pick back up, (though I’d appreciate it) so… y’know.

You guys. Always the same with you.

You really want to know whats “wrong” with ranked?
… You. All of you. The majority of players in this game are beyond garbage, but somehow for some unknown reason possess the ego of a triple Superbowl winning star athlete. It’s always the teammate’s fault, it’s always the opponent’s stacking, it’s always the algorithm being shit, it’s always unbalanced games. Not once, ever, in this game or any other game (LoL, Dota, CSGO, OW) have I ever heard a guy go “well, those guys were legitimately better than me and deserved to win”, there’s always some or another bullshit idiotic excuse people have got stuck up in their heads.

Got no medic? Guess what, ADAPT. Go play medic. Oh, your team is lacking engineers? Well, you have a fancy little button that just might magically turn you into one. This ridiculous amount of whining going on in this forum and reddit ever since ranked first went up in March is beyond retarded.

tl;dr: git gud.
The ‘competitive’ aspect is not what attracts most players in ranked. They want balanced games, but none of the competition. It’s just as bad as in casual, where someone starts spamming shuffle votes as soon as they see a hint of a loss.
They want balanced games, but none of the competition; How did the cat get so Fat?

^^ Welcome to Pubs.

Ranked should be the beginning of serious play.

(Jostabeere) #45

Even though all of you doing a great job, shouldn’t you like, as a moderator, watch out for people not posting abusive shit towards other players? I don’t really care, if it’s from a series or not, I find it abusive. He keeps on shitting on people for posting ideas and call them names without any reason even after 15 flags.

(FUNNYBLACKMAN) #46

I don’t even sh*t on this game at all.I believe that its awesome the way it is.Maybe they should change how the ranks work a bit but I personally don’t really give one because I don’t play ranked. This game would be perfect if the high percentage of players weren’t so casual and careless.
I really don’t have a side and I agree with pretty much everything. All these problems will surely be fixed in the future as the game grows.

(Kingsley) #47

@Jostabeere I shit on people, you shit on this game. We’re both not ideal. And even so, most of my posts are reported as abuse by you before there’s an inflammatory reaction by myself. And you’re not American, you perceive the language very literal, it’s quite amusing. I initially thought your hurt feelings was a childish response to disagreement and now I realize it’s more complex than that. My problem is that you seem to want to have an uncontested pull in these discussions. As I pointed out before you probably have more posts advocating BS game changes (your most reputable was your campaign to ban all Russians from playing this game) than minutes in the game. I rarely get the opportunity to read positive posts on DB and you are a frequent reminder of how that’s true.

(Mrarauzz) #48

@FUNNYBLACKMAN I shit on the game because I think changes are being made to accommodate the players who aren’t good and get destroyed by better players. This is my second PC game I played and I was fairly bad in the beginning. I have grown as a player by getting shit on and learning. I don’t think criticizing a game for some things you disagree with is bad tho, also add

(Demolama) #49

Rank is too serious for those who just want to play without getting frustrated. With the lack of 5 man’s that frustration just increased with the unknown quality of teammates you’ll get. At least in non-ranked I can switch servers if I’m on a team with 3 snipers without getting a penalty and losing the ability to play again

(Merci1ess) #50

But… Snipers are good… bro…

(torsoreaper) #51

I don’t play because it takes too long to find a match.

(Jostabeere) #52
My problem is you being a dick to people, because you don’t want them to have a better game. People suggest things, and you shit on them for doing suggestions, being creative.
You act like they are butthurt little special snowflakes because they want to make the game better for themselves and other players, and if you hit disapproval, you evolve into the butthurt kid, as seen on multiple flag and disagree sprees, and you lying to moderators about those.
Ever thought about the fact, that you barely see positive posts about DB (which isn’t even true) because the whole system is not perfect, and people want to improve it?
And P.S. I have far more minutes in this game than forum posts. Would be nice to see, how much you actually played the game, to make such claims.
And because I see it’s pretty useless to argue with an arrogant and selfish person like you. You’re the best out here, we’re all special little Snowflakes. But remember: Talk shit, get hit.
(Mura) #53

For me it’s the long wait times, then getting placed with a team of quitters. Ruins the whole thing and it sours my mood.

(bgyoshi) #54

Nonconstructive arguing is absolutely not helpful for this thread. Keep your fun little arguments in private chat.

I still want more suggestions about how to create a ranked atmosphere that pubbies will play, instead of the competitive atmosphere we know they already don’t, and won’t, play.

Would a “ranked pub” kind of ladder, like I’m suggesting, work? Is there something else that could be better?

You answered it yourself already. Atmosphere. What creates the atmosphere? Players themselves. How players create it? With their actions, discussion about and mindset towards the ranked mode. I repeat, ranked, not competitive mode.

To put it bluntly, it looks like those of lower skilled players who eager for easy wins, get into ranked in thought of those, get bashed, give up and whine about the mode or just quit in silence. Lower skilled but eager to progress players might stay there, but due not having enough lower skilled counterparts and somewhat issued matchmaker they don’t have the best environment to get higher.

Those of higher skilled players on the other hand wont get enough higher skilled counterparts if barely anyone rises the ladder from bottom to the top. So, they’re still left with long ques and slowly cease playing, making it even harder for staying ones to find balanced matches.

So all in all it mostly falls down on today’s mindset in gaming, which is way too much tilting towards expectation of easy achieving. Or thinking ranked mode is some extremely competitive setting where one achieves stuff by simply playing themselves to lvl10 in pubs. If people learned to, at starters, treat it as 5v5 pubs, once they get higher on the ladder more expectations towards their teammates and mode itself can be had.

Yup. Good example - my ranked game yesterday. Enemy team finished the second obj on bridge just a few seconds before the end, after a good fiery fight. And it took them very long (~9-10 mins) to repair the EV. But, when we were attacking and wasn’t able to repair it after first 5 minutes, my teammates lost their will to fight, saying “gg”, “lost game” and this kind of stuff. I was keep telling them “hey, it took them longer then that, don’t worry, fight”, and then we repaired it, finally, in about the same time as our enemies. But even this wasn’t enough, because instead of focusing on the generator 3 of my teammates said the game is lost, so they won’t even try. We with the other teammate basically destroyed it ourselves but time ran out shortly after that - and all we needed were 30 seconds and it’d be a draw.
I was the topscorer, he was second, and those 3 whiners were probably low-lvl players (judging by score and k/d), who thought they will just jump in ranked and get some easy win. I’m glad they at least stayed in the game…

You simply can’t enjoy this mode if you have to play with this type of people. You just can’t. And devs can’t do anything about it.

What would you insist devs to do about it? Not attacking you, but I simply can’t see what cards would possibly be on game developers hand in order to deal with individual’s attitude?

One thing that is possible is attempting to create rank system where this type of people are put as low as possible. Bronze games becoming exactly same as maxlvl5 servers where chaos ensues and people are just plain bad. Which is just fine in my opinion. Although this type of personality will still give up, find external issues to blame, and so forth.

Their outcries should mostly just be dealt with frustrated angst that spawns from their own feel of inadequateness, which targets external factors because for weirdest of reasons nowadays it’s globally perceived as a horrible personal failure to take the guts to admit and finding wrong in oneself. I don’t blame solely these people, its the environment that is globally being created too, but change starts from within.

Stress should be shrugged off the ranked mode though, but I can’t see how to do that besides simply starting to think differently on individual levels.

(BerylRdm) #58

It’s just my poor english - I meant that devs can’t do anything about it ; ) Editing. This is what you get, when you mindlessly use phrase calqued from your mother tongue.

(bgyoshi) #59

Well, the point I’m trying to make is that it’s not just the attitude of the players, but also the game options they have. There are 3 game modes with 3 different player caps in casual, and 1 game mode with 1 player cap in Competitive.

To be honest, player attitudes in Ranked will never change, no matter what. Look at ranked LoL, or TF2, or StarCraft, or CS, or really any ranked/competitive environment. They’re all that way. All of them. And yet all of them are more popular.

I personally don’t play ranked because 5v5 is not enjoyable, at all. And I know this is true for most people I know. I feel most players play casual because they have more options, and as long as they have more options in casual, they will always play casual. Ranked needs these options to get people to move over.

(Xenithos) #60

I have quite a few ideas, not willing to read through this list as i only have 10 minutes til school, but i can revise later:

 • Give a guaranteed equipment case drop for every match played.
 • Make support xp really valuable in competitive, so playing as a team is more rewarding in actual gp, and rank.
 • Have a screen detailing your team’s weaknesses before launching, such as not enough medics, no recon/fire support, etc.
 • It would be awesome if said screen would sort out each player’s best merc and feature those for the other’s to see as well.
 • Somewhat force players to play competitive, those missions coming back would be awesome. Even better if they gave better rewards.
 • Everytime a rank up is caused, give an expert case.
 • Possibly allow players to serve as game show hosts (can’t remember term) and announce funny stuff to keep the game even more fun.
 • some others, will remember by time i get home…

tell me what you think, and i know some of them are quite a bit more different.
changing the value of support xp directly should directly effect team mentality in competitive. Forces them to try harder to work as a team than just play compet cuz dey vanna…

Also: GG Jostabeere

Ranked has objective issues that need to be taken out or changed. Period.
Expand on this topic! I’d rather keep discussion on topic and off of any kind of assholery that happens in other threads.

What objective issues need fixing?
Like I said in the first post, things like an unclear Elo ranking. People should see the exact ranking of their teammates and opponents. In addition to this the MM system shouldn’t place all potatoes in one team because one guy happens to have a high Elo, dooming him to to carrying a 4 man team against probably not so high players, but ones who can work as a team.
The current giving of a rank is flawed in my opinion.
A rank shouldn’t be given until a player actually WINS an amount of games. Right now I can enter 10 games, and camp in my base to get to Silver or something without actually doing much.

And maybe cutting the 50% rewards before a player get to his rank, while increasing the reward the more a player climbs up the ranking ladder. So people have an incentive to actually win competitive games, so they get more out of it. Maybe special cases which contain a single random loadout based on the rank per season. Bronze for Silver, Silver for Gold, Gold for Cobalt and a Cobalt card for Elites.
The punishments are too forgiveable. Timeouts for leaving games should extend to normal mode aswell, eliminating the incentives to leave the game.
Oh yeah. And level 7 is too low to enter competitive. I played with a guy who is actually pretty good, and every game we had 3 potatoes against 5 people with a 3-digit-playitime counter. Spoiler alert, they were over 200. 10 is probably low aswell. 15 isn’t that much if you can play, but will keep bad players out for long enough so they can learn the game.
