Why is ET Free??????

(_NeT_WalBanger) #1

Ok sorry it has probably been asked a 1,000 before but WHY is ET Free?

(amazinglarry) #2

This is why… read the whole article at Tom’s Hardware…

THG - During the keynote yesterday, you made a comment about RTCW: Enemy Territory. You said that you considered it be the best free game ever, in your opinion. You guys obviously could have decided to box it up and sell it; it’s a great game. Could you talk about the philosophy behind why you decided to give it away?

TH - You’re right; we could have sold it on the market. But we weren’t happy with the single player part of the game. We really felt as though what we had advertised to people was that there would be a single player part of the game as well as a multiplayer part. So we were faced with a dilemma. If we had sold it as a complete package, we would have been selling a game that we weren’t completely happy with, and that’s not we’re about; we don’t make mediocre games. We want everything we put in a box to be great. And although we were very pleased with the multiplayer part of the game, we didn’t think that it had enough content to sell as an add-on. There weren’t a large number of maps, and there were only two campaigns. So we didn’t think that we would have been justified, if we asked consumers for $20 or $30 dollars, yet we didn’t want to put all of our good work to waste. And we felt that Splash Damage would have been really disappointed, just as the fans would, if we just threw it away. It was a tough decision, since we knew that we weren’t going to see any revenue return by giving it away. But we decided that it would be better to release the part of the game that we were happy with, than to put out a game that we felt lacked the shine that it needed to have.

No it isn’t! We’re horrible! It’s nothing to do with us! We just made it, id and Activision made all the publishing decisions. If it were down to us, we’d have insisted on pricing it at £89.99/$299.00/as many cakes as we can lift/rights to your sisters. :weird:

Our only goal is to screw you guys out of as much money as possible, and we failed. Lord, how we failed.

:moo:

(ETplayer) #5

yup, ur a failure

(karpo_007) #6

I would gladly pay for the game if it would mean on going development, like bug fixes and new maps. Well maybe there will be a ET: 2 someday…

(skinner) #7

but we would have killed the enemies already and it couldn’t be called enemy territory then, cos there would be no enemies, so it would have to be called ‘Friendly Territory’ and we would all just sit around drinking cups of very bad military tea which is no fun…

ill give a 4th possible answer:

the q3 engine is very old and dated and nearing the end of its life cycle (if it hasnt passed it already :D)

q4 and doom3 are just round the corner, so ET is a sort of ‘going away gift’ from ID to the community, for all the revenue they raked from q3/jk2/rtcw etc.

me? i would gladly have paid $10 or so for it.

(Emon) #12

The fact that something’s free just makes it a whole lot cooler. It makes it feel better.

(Fusen) #13

hmmm I would be pretty mad at ID and activision if I spent like 1-2 years on the game then they gave it awya free but then I’m not SD so I can just laugh at you lot loosing all that money you could have made if you sold the game =D lol, also why didnt you ever think of going about selling it yourself on the net? instead of including ID and ac

(Sauron|EFG) #14

SD still got paid (I just hope they didn’t spend it all on booze and hookers). And they couldn’t have sold it themselves since it’s not their game/engine.

:bored:

(Warskull) #16

Proof of a benevolent diety?

(colic) #17

How about another theory

The game as we know is unsupported. i.e there is no support for the game in the form of patches. Apart from the 1 server patch.

But hey its using an old engine (Q3) and they should all be working hard making DOOM3 a great game  even though lots of peeps are gonna have to upgrade there system (even me :()

(amazinglarry) #18

So, they released it for free because it was unsupported?

(chavo_one) #19

Not exactly true! Call of Duty is going to be a full priced game and it is based off an enhanced Q3/RtCW engine!

So, they released it for free because it was unsupported?

No, it is unsupported because it was free.

(Englander) #20

I think it was free due to the fact the game doesnt have SP side to it,if it did they would have probably charged.
