Why does so few players choose mercs based on what the team needs?

(Lumi) #41
Some have already addressed this, but I feel like three things are at the origin of that frustration:

1.Missions: People (me inclusive) don’t care about playing medic if there is that one game mode xp mission going on, or vice versa.

There you go.

Are you being delibirately stupid? Your comment doesn´t tell shit. Yes, they play stupidly becuase they want to, but I am asking why they want to. I fail to see why they find more pleasure in crapping all over their teams than they do in playing the game the way it´ meant to.
His comment is exactly the answer needed. The only one being ignorant is you. If you want to be told how to have fun have at it. Most players aren’t going to play something they don’t want to in a pub. If you’re looking for people to work as a team get friends and rely on them, but complaining about people not playing the game “how it’s meant to be played” in a pub is ridiculous. Winning isn’t everything buddy and if you think the only way to have fun is by winning then that’s your own problem. It’s a simple question with a simple answer.
I always make sure I use the merc class that is being used the LEAST by everyone else within the game.

[…] I think a lot of it has to do with new players not knowing what they are doing
That means that sometimes, being the 4th Skyhammer is necessary if the other three don’t drop ammo for anyone besides themselves. I especially like it when they tell me to find an ammo crate instead of knifing them and obscuring their view (I know, forums hate people obscuring views… but it’s their job and I’d stop if I had some ammo. I promise!)

Similar situation with medics, some will never use their ability for anyone else. Or Engineers camping at their mines/turrets/bombs while on offense. In that case, being engineer doesn’t help too much as they sit back and are useless anyways ^^

(LJK) #44

Don’t forget that some players have limited choices. A low level player with no starter pack can’t just adapt to the team comp. And he probably have no clue about what the team lacks.

@Viquel , Ahah one day a guy was obscuring me for getting a medpack. I was telling him that it was on cooldown (being the only medic, lot of work to do, usual stuff). He continued until my CD ended. Hope you are not THAT GUY :stuck_out_tongue:

(Cotxe) #45

Well, personaly i need credits to unlock mercs. And to be honest - i don’t care about picking merc which would be the best for team…
That’s just how it works - when i/we will have enough mercs than we can talk about picking proper ones for teamplay.

(Mescman) #46

I think the average gamer will just play whatever merc he/she wants at the time, instead of trying to min/max… Where should people play the mercs they want to play, if not at pubs?

(AirborneAsian) #47

People just play what they want because they think other people will do it instead. For example, i’m using Red Eye, and I think in my mind: ‘Oh, just let the other peeps in my team disarm/arm or become a medic.’ I’m just too lazy. I want to get a decent score, not freaking do what I don’t want to do.

I always base it on what I feel like playing. Lately I’ve been rolling with Skyhammer, Phantom and Redeye.

(Edzer) #50

So I assume you disliked my post because of this part:

Don’t compare my fragger/skyhammer to the level 5 vassili trash that’s camping in base on offense. I’m the guy you see topscoring (almost) every single match with fragger/skyhammer in both score and kills. Zoning enemies out and allowing my team to complete objectives.

This has nothing to do with comfort zone nonsense, heck I used to be a sparks main. It’s just about making my team win. Playing a medic doesn’t carry unless you got a decent team which most of the time isn’t the case.

I wasn’t directing it at you. I meant to say that the argument that people are good at what they play doesn’t count for those who then end up frustrating us. Of course if you’re good with what you’re playing, nobody is going to question your merc choice. I was merely trying to emphasize the fact that most people are actually in the “not good enough” situation. Especially when trying out mercs on rotation…

I can definitely see what you mean. Even if my team is in desperate need of a medic, I am occasionally forced to pick an engineer merc because no one is going for the objective. It is tough being the only one that is actually going for the win.

That’s like saying why doesn’t the whole world act as a single unit?

Simple, we’re humans.

The times when you have four vassili’s on offense, all just sitting in the back doing nothing… Sigh.

I’m pretty sure we’re all apart of the hive.

(kopyright) #57

At the moment I play what suits me most. I’d rather be a good Skyhammer to my team than a bad medic.

(-0wnage-) #58

Lol this is funny.

People complain Vassili players suck.
People complain Vassili players Insta gib.

It’s more that many Vassili players do not know how to use him to help the team on offense. Like the ones you meet sitting in your base on Bridge hiding all the way back behind a van, hoping for some people to walk past on top of the bridge or jump over the middle wall and thus not helping your team complete objectives.

Heck a good Vassili player is a nightmare with instagibbing.

“Becuase they want to” is the kind of answer you´d expect from a 12 year old. There is nothing unreasonable about wanting your teammates to do at least some sort of effort to help out the team. It doesn´t matter how you put it, winning IS more fun than losing, and you don´t have to play something you hate to help in achieving victory, a lot of the time just some common sense would help a great deal…

I play a lot with friends, but I also do a lot of solo play on pubs, and I don´t see why people should crap all over their teams just because it´s a pub. DB is a game based on team efforts, if you wanna go completely solo there are games more suitable for that.

You don´t start playing football if you don´t care for teamplay so to speak.

Like I´ve said, there is always something you can do to help your team in some way, even without doing any huge changes. Use some common sense in where you choose to fight, play your characters strengths and use your second favorite merch for a little while when it´s more needed than your number one choice. But even this seems to be asking too much. I thing it´s a completely reasonable request that your teammates at least don´t cripple your team.
