Why does so few players choose mercs based on what the team needs?

(libidoknievel) #21

i would say it doesnt hurt to ask someone who doesnt appear to be doing well/contributing much to change merc. that said their decision is final so i wouldnt pursue it. demanding it is wrong.

I do play competetive when I´m playing with my mates, but it takes a lot of time finding games so whenever I´m solo, pub is simply easier when I want a lot of game time.

No shit sherlock. If you look really carefully at what I wrote and try really hard you will hopefully be able to figure out that what I´m wondering is WHY people WANT to play in ways that are counter productive for their team.

Don´t you think winning is more fun than losing?

What a lot of people here seem to fail to realize is that there are a lot more ways to help your team than just playing medic the entire game. And there are a lot of ways helping your team just by the way you play, regardless of merch. I see a lot of people that just run around everywhere but at the objective, trying to score kills and not giving a fuck about anything. If you just wanna kill, why not focus on killing people who are trying to defuse a bomb or repairing the EV?

Like it or not, but Dirty Bomb is a game based on teamplay, the whole concept is that you are forced to work together in order to win. If you have no interest in teamplay, why play a game like that, when there are plenty of games with free for all deathmatches and such?

I’m talking about the people that run around dying or missing all their shots and are constantly saying “We need a medic/fire support” when they have either in their squad.

(Backuplight) #24

Some days I’ll join a game, see they have no medic, and I’ll play medic. Other days, I’d join that same game, and be like “…Great, no medic. I don’t feel like it, I’m playing Proxy”. When someone starts yelling over coms or in chat for someone to switch to medic, that’s more of an issue to me. At the end of the day if you’re playing publics you just have to accept that teams are going to be ridiculous sometimes. As long as the two teams are more or less equal amounts of ridiculous, it’s still pretty fun.

(Ghosthree3) #25

And if you’d look at my comment again you’ll see it pretty much tells you why. Because they want to. It makes them more happy to play what they want than what the team needs.

If only people got good with the Remburg, everyone would play Aura. She’s honestly one of the best mercs in the game if you can aim well while flying around.

(watsyurdeal) #28

We’re limited to 3 mercs at a time, and because of that limit people will choose whatever they like to play.

There’s really no getting around that, they made this game free to play, so trying to combat class spam and ensuring people have access to whatever they need at any given time is impossible.

Honestly the Meta is crippled by that and this whole loadout card thing.

(Ghosthree3) #29

I wish I was good enough to play Aura more. I can’t get the movement to what I’d consider a good level while also aiming good. Also I seem to miss follow up shots more often than not, the first shot is generally ok though.

Can’t use pistols either for the same reason. I just wasn’t built to land tempo shots man :frowning:

(KangaJoo) #30

I agree most people play the game selfishly and only care about their individual stats but there’s nothing wrong with using vassili on offense even on maps like underground. He’s really good for getting an opening pick or two and his HBS is extremely useful on offense or defense for the whole team.

I just played a game with 5 fatso Rhinoes on my team. I’m still finding the words to describe that experience

Are you being delibirately stupid? Your comment doesn´t tell shit. Yes, they play stupidly becuase they want to, but I am asking why they want to. I fail to see why they find more pleasure in crapping all over their teams than they do in playing the game the way it´ meant to.

(Radford_343) #33

I don’t think Ghosthree3 said that, bad formatting?

Also your question has been answered. You ask why people choose to play the classes they like, with little or no regard to team composition.

The answer is because they want to.

Sure you can analyze the heck out of possible reasons as to exactly why that is, but I think that study would have to include a lot more than just video games.

(Mister__Wiggles) #34

Free merc rotations ruin the team set up, BUT without free merc rotations the game wouldn’t be as welcoming to the new players so it’s a hard one to balance. Imo, one merc should be in rotation a week, because new players start with aura and skyhammer so having that one free merc will fill out their squad and limit the spam. The problem I see with this is that we only get 2 mercs to start when you need 3 for a squad, surely there should be a starter merc brought out that’s free for everyone that is a engi of some sort. This would give new players an option for every scenario.

(Sinee) #35

@Overd0se I feel you. Most people want to do Team Deathmatch, yet when someone proposes the idea of a TDM mode like in CS, everyone disagrees. Yet time after time, I see people opting for TDM over objectives/teamwork.

Might as well just pioneer for the mode to be implemented instead of making regular matches complete clusterfucks.

I don’t think any of the shotty’s are hard to play? If anything they’re probably the easiest. I don’t play Aura/Proxy because shotguns in this game are cheap and too easy. The skill ceiling is very low. Little spread, absurd damage, ridiculous range… I usually try to just completely avoid Aura’s and Proxy’s so I don’t get killed in a way that leaves a bad taste in my mouth. I agree with you that Aura is probably one of the best mercs. Incredible speed, near invincibility if she squats on her health station, and the shotty. Guess that’s why she’s a merc given to beginners.

(bwort110) #36

I just play comp and mostly I am in balanced teams with all classes. I don’t know if u can force people in pub to play classes they don’t want, cause it’s pub.

(Vx89) #37

It’s simple. People are selfish and stupid. Player’s will play what they want regardless of the consequences. Best examples are imbalanced Merc comp or incompetent Merc play and Lack critical thinking.

Imbalanced Merc Comp: 3 to 4 Vassili’s. No medics. No Engineers. And No Fragger.
I find Fragger superior to Nader because of the larger health pool, the enormous damage from his grenades and he’s got some awesome assault weapon choices. Prefer the M4 though.

Incompetent Merc Play: Engineer not planting or diffusing the bomb, Medics not reviving or charging paddles to full, deploying healing stations, throwing med packs at Merc for direct heal. Skyhammer/Arty/Kira not giving ammo using strike capabilities poorly.

Lack of critical thinking:

Medic or Skyhammer/Arty/Kira switching to different Mercs at incredibly bad times.

Example) Defending the Datacores on Bridge and the only two Skyhammer’s on your team switch to other mercs. Defense over run because half the team is calling for ammo the Offence get they’re first datacore. The two player’s don’t switch/refuse to go back to Skyhammer and your team is eventually overrun again and you lose.

Bridge:

Team doesn’t go to defend/secure the secondary objective. Its a perfect choke point. If the Offence can’t get past that secondary they’re more likely to lose. Too many times they’re aren’t enough players defending that location, or engineers don’t immediately run to it the second the Offence repairs the EV and they get over run.

Underground:

Offence doesn’t plant C4 by stairs but behind the computer’s in the center. Plant by the stairs and its almost always a win, but many times some idiot not using they’re brain plants it in a location where it can’t be covered and they lose.

Skyhammer/Arty: Directly hit teammates with ammo packs. You receive more Experience and you lower your teammates cooldowns on they’re own abilities.

Medics: Charging paddles to full restores more health to your teammates and you earn more Experience. Deploy Healing stations and Direct hit with Med Packs to heal your teammates for more and earn more experience.

Some have already addressed this, but I feel like three things are at the origin of that frustration:

1.Missions: People (me inclusive) don’t care about playing medic if there is that one game mode xp mission going on, or vice versa.

2.The lack of forced tutorial generates a lot of people who have no clue about the defib, or the ammo packs. I once had a game with a level 6 player playing Aura and writing: WHAT THE HELL IS REVIVE? after I asked for it tons of times through mic.

  1. Rotations, rotations, rotations. Oh and did I mention rotations? Seriously, people will go for the play with that merc they haven’t had a go at yet. Especially in the first day after merc rotation you’ll easily see a game with only 2 kinds of mercs, three at best. I’ve already suggested a limit for mercs on rotation if people don’t own them. Limiting a team’s composition to a restricted amount of those rotation mercs.

Many people also state the fact that people are actually good with the merc they’re playing and don’t want to go out of theur comfort zone, but to me it’s just frustrating to see a vasilli insisting on playing sniper while staying at the lowest end of the table. Offensive merc player need to actually make those kills. And often I finish with the highest KD or close to it while playing Sparks, which is simply not normal. I should have the lowest KD on my team, but people seem to not be able to pull their weight.

I’m afraid this game will eventually move towards a Lol type of community, with those who are “in” experience wise and those who are completely at a loss. We need servers to start allowing for extra spectator slots, in order for some people to gain some tricks simply by watching others play. I’d love to see a good fletcher or a good kira play as I’m completely at a loss when playing those right now, but it sucks that I have to leave my team shorthanded when I’m watching the game.

(Supa) #39

I agree with you and see your frustration. I always make sure I use the merc class that is being used the LEAST by everyone else within the game. My 3 main mercs are Sawbonez, Proxy, and Fragger. Every game that I am in (ranked or pubs) I try to make sure I use these 3 to their fullest abilities.

People do play pretty selfishly in most pub matches but I think a lot of it has to do with new players not knowing what they are doing. The population in fps gaming is solely based on killing in comparison to objectives. It has been a while since a teamwork-oriented FPS game such as this has been done right (Wolf: ET comes to mind). More recently, TF2 did a pretty good job accomplishing this same concept but the style and the way the game played out takes a fairly specific taste. Because of it’s comparisons to recent titles largely from commentators (Whether correct or incorrect), Dirty Bomb seems to be attracting a wider audience.

Best we can hope for is that the devs fix the hacking issues that are currently outstanding in competitive so that the focus on teamwork will stay true to the game. As far as public matches go, I think most new players will learn in time.

(stealthyCaper) #40

No-one mentioning missions as possible cause ? Getting 2 specific merc missions at the same time is quickly depleting my options (especially if they’re ones I’m not very good at). Please just give out XP type or merc class type only missions, not specific merc ones.
