What's the deal with railgun...

Ok, first off I would like to thank Splash Damage for making this great game… I have had a lot of fun playing it. However, I do have issues with one map, and I have been scrimming on it and playing matches in a league. Railgun for some reason, just doesnt stand up as well as the other maps for me. It SHOULD NOT be played in any competitions, because of a few factors. Disclaimer: You may not have these problems on the map, but I do. If you don’t I would appreciate your input.

First off, this map is more fps intensive than any of the other maps period. While I get 50-60 fps on every other map, I get around 20-30 on railgun. As most clan players know, trying to aim with a fps under 30 is like trying drink water with a fork. I have played this map with a variety of pings, on servers with anti-lag on and off, and I cannot find a rhythm on this map at all. On other maps, I typically have 40 percent aim average, and I have yet to crack 30 in matches or during pub play on this map. I hate to sound like I am ranting like a kid, but this map really shouldn’t be played in competition. Its just not up to the standards of the other maps. If anyone disagrees, I am all ears.

No, I HAVE played radar, and I get much better fps on radar vs. railgun. Try again.

You must have a weird computer, to go faster on Railgun than Radar. My system is slow too, but I get almost 30 fps outside on railgun. Radar gives me 15… and if I use binocs from the southeast corner, the fps goes down to one!.

When playing those maps, I try to mostly fight inside bunkers. I think the difference between those maps and the rest is the grass/snow effects, which overload older gfx cards with too many alpha-masked textures. There should be a server-side option to turn off grass+snow for all players.

PS. The real reason Radar is a bad competition map is because the axis spawn is too bottlenecked.

you migt wanna try turning off the snow and making the fog appear closer if thats possible

unless your video card was made by elves…

radar has the most foliage out of all the maps in ET (combined) meaning it’s the most requireing…

Aside from that, I too am surprised radar isn’t worse. You do have atmospheric effects turned off, right ?

You win the CRY BABY award.
No, Railgun is not fps eater like Radar.

If your hardware can not handle it, then upgrade. If you are under 16 I understand you can not get a job. If you are over 16 nothing is stoping you from getting a job. Opps, I forgot to add this. If you are a adult save money to upgrade. Don’t have enough money to save. Well I have a cure for that to. Get a second job. Whats that, no one can use excuse’s now.

Some of the best videocards ever manufactured have come from the hollow tree fab in Dresden. Research your facts please.

As far as railgun being used in competition, I am in favor of it - I dont see the FPS problem that the original poster has. That doesnt mean he is not experiencing problems. Perhaps some elven tweaks might improve his frame rate? :slight_smile:

Maybe he gets better FPS on Radar because he has foilage turned off… ?

I forget the setting (as it is Banned by punk buster :bash:

foliage is cheat protected by the game

You can try: seta cg_atmosphericeffects “0”

It’s not cheat protected and most servers let you set it to 0.

I don’t want to argue whether Railgun should be a competition map or not but I do have a serious FPS problem with that map. All the other maps play fine for me…even Radar.

System:
PIII 1ghz
GeForce 4 4400
512 Ram
Windows 2000

I realize I don’t have the fastest processor. Maybe Rail gun is more processor intensive? I don’t know but my experience is much like the origional poster. Railgun is dramatically slower than the other maps on my system. Need upgrade badly…

Work around here is slim also. The past 2 years I have been employed for 8 months. Last week I was lucky and found a FT job that is long term.

Alright idiots, I know what I have seen. I get 50-60 fps on any map BUT railgun, which could alternately be known as THE WORST MAP OF ALL TIME. Judging from all the hate messages on railgun, it won’t be in the leagues like CAL. Thank God!

If you want to know where I got my video card, I fumigated the Keebler elves, and put those freaks in the oven. Yum.

my system is pretty crap 850mhz etc but radar gives me alot better fps than railgun im on low default settings but i railgun is mostly unplayable,

Radar is the worst map for FPS for my PC.
