What's the best "Brink entitlement" story you have?

(Jess Alon) #41

I mean a whole in game GUI where your weapon can be customized by part and you can exchange parts from different guns to build a better gun.

Anyway I think they dumbed down the RPG side of borderlands for the sake of it being more FPS friendly. Not that I didn’t have fun playing it.

Borderlands was never meant to have a heavy RPG side - it was designed as an FPS hack-n-slash, where the emphasis was on killing enemies and collecting loot.

I don’t think anyone ever made an in-game visual constructor, but there was an out-of-game app called Gearclac that let you build guns piece by piece, the same way the game’s bot would do it. You could then export them to your save from there. It was essentially just as good.

(Jess Alon) #44

I really think that would have kicked the game up a notch. But some people would have found it too cumbersome. So you can do this on xbox with no mods?

(H0RSE) #45

I think you use a program on PC to create your weapons and transfer the data via a usb to the xbox.

(Jess Alon) #46

Eh. So it’s kind of cheating.

Nothing ironic about discussing things that could/should have been in Borderlands in a thread about taking the piss out of others for doing the same on an unreleased game.

Nothing. At. All.

I was just talking about the one thing. But honestly… if an article was released saying Brink was going to be an objective based shooter with deep customization. And the customization was discussed extensively in the first press release ever about the game. And then there were 4 characters to choose from. Then I’d be taking the piss out of brink right now.

But Brink looks like it’ll deliver on everything that’s been advertised.

(Auzner) #49

A well stated point. It’s like they think after seeing a movie trailer in theaters they can go email the director and have the story and cast changed or else they won’t go see it.

I knew better than to ever start in those communities, but I still think some will hate it and quit. If Brink can become a paradigm shift, they will come back and learn to accept it. It’s up to the player if they want to think harder about a video game or not. I think it would reward them to do so.

I’ve quoted you twice because I strongly agree with what you have been writing lately.
And then there were those who made an account just to say ‘‘canceled my pre-order, no female models means my gf won’t play it, eat that SD. kthxbai.’’
Those were comic.
I’m going to believe that most of them were trolls. The really persistent ones just chose something to whine about which never affected them.

Shooters need substance along with the shooting. Having a lot going on will cause a wider variety of ability levels between players. People won’t get bored as easily and be less likely to grief.

I think the point was that some of those things were actually promised and that the devs let everyone down. Also Borderlands was a horribly boring game and a failure to me. Hellgate London in the desert. No one can seem to do Diablo with guns.

I would love to see a studio produce a multiplayer squad based game that is about survival, resource gathering, weapon smithing, rpg stats and abilities, and vehicle upkeep.

It would have randomly generated buildings and maps to explore. And players would have to fight off random mobs to gather resources to survive ala two worlds multiplayer. But also sometimes two seperate squads would land on the same map at the same time and would have the option to fight it out to loot each other or flee the map to avoid being killed.

I think a game like this (probably post apoc) would be awesome. And that’s kind of what I thought borderlands would be. Because it’s what I have on pen and paper as a game idea that I don’t think will ever be made.

(Jess Alon) #51

Back on topic. My favorite forum members are the ones that start out their forum existence by stating that they are in fact Brink’s biggest fan and that they’ve been supporting Splash Damage ever since they made “Wolfenstein 3D” or something ridiculous like that. They try to look as legit as possible even though they are as transparent as saran wrap. And then they go on to ask the most basic of questions about the game. And then upon getting answers they let you know how it REALLY should be.

These people are pure comic gold.

(Herandar) #52

Sounds awesome, but also extremely complex and niche, I’m afraid.

(madoule) #53

has anyone played that Operation Flashpoint mod, this’s been great. only downside was the time commitment, the good matches lasted 1,5 hours minimum… EDIT: on those matches weren’t fun…

(Seyu) #54

There are plenty of such MMOs though Fallen Earth, Firefall, Earthrise and the like.

(tokamak) #55

The most common entitlement thing is that people think their new, fresh and original question or suggestion merits a new thread.
There are underwater levels - not underwater like actually in the water, but levels that take place in buildings/institutions under the water.

They have some kind of underwater aquarium level.
Great, now someone is going to complain about how SD is completely unoriginal and “stole” this idea from Bioshock and now Brink will be classified as a Bioshock ripoff and how SD/Bethesda need to come up with original ideas. And the water won’t look as good and therefore Brink will fail. All because of these level(s) you speak of.

(BrigandSk(A)) #57

NO!

Bioshock is singleplayer and happens in an underwater city with 50’s theme. It’s a fps with adventure action components.

While

Brink is a hybrid singleplayer/coop/multiplayer and happens on a floating sustainable city with near future theme and very characteristic art porpotions and color. It’s a heavily based fps game with optional ways of playing a fps, logistic and maintenance.

The major difference between the 2 of them is that 1 is straight forward story telling while you go all the way as a lone wolf. And in Brink a lone wolf is supposed to run for help (even if they are just helping themselves… getting ammo at command post XD)

(Seyu) #58

Uh, thw difference between the two games was kind of the point of his post.

(BioSnark) #59

Unless Splash Damage puts a post count requirement on creating new threads, registration entitles people to do just that.

(RumRunner) #60

nah then the new people would just create loads of spam +post count posts so that they could post their asinine ideas, or demand <insert random feature here>.

would be better to have a “lurking requirement”, i.e. you have to read x amount of posts/threads before creating new threads, would be more effective as those who were new would be at least somewhat informed prior to creating new threads…

also yes, though i am newish i am informed as i lurked these and the bethesda forums for around a month or so before i ended up registering for them when i was bored.
