What's the best "Brink entitlement" story you have?

(Auzner) #61

Even more niche: Multiplayer Nethack + Stalker styled like Bladerunner (or 80’s cyberpunk). If I had the money I would independently fund the development of such a game. L4D with a persistent world and character progression would be a start of the idea.

When people do that to unlock pointless forum stuff it just flags them as someone to ban sooner. They’re around for the “achievements” and not actual content or in depth discussions. Everything has to give a cookie now.

I am surprised I haven’t seen anyone yelling that they must implement Spawn on Squadleader/Teammate. Maybe they have and I just missed it (haven’t read the whole thread, first example was indeed funny though).

The killcam is only for the person who got killed, not everyone who is playing…

(Crytiqal) #64

euh… without the SMART button you would ALSO need battlefield awareness/intelligence.

So it isn’t a shift in skill but a reduction…

I’m talking smart as opposed to having a complicated combination of buttons (aka button mashing) which would prevent some people from getting to some places.

It isn’t a reduction in skill, you have to take into account that anyone can be anywhere on the map and not only a few individuals who played and mastered Mirror’s Edge. In that case, you would have to check to major chokepoints and sometime check the other places as you know there wouldn’t be a lot of people that have the button mashing ability of getting there. Now you have to check just about everywhere.

(Crytiqal) #66

Why does everyone call it button “mashing” or whatever?

Learning how to move is a skill you know, I don’t understand the hostility towards it, which I suppose mainly comes from people who can’t do trickjumps etc.

Wolfenstein: ET even had a whole mod for Trickjumping and had loads of trickjump maps, so yes, it’s a skill you can learn to master, and if anyone could accomplish those trickjump maps with the press of one button then that is undermining the skill.

I am therefor pleased to know that actually investing time and learning to master the skill of movement DOES give you an edge then those who rely on pressing one button.

Exploiting the original intent of the game is not really fair play. It’s taking advantage of the fact it’s not going to be patched. Jumping over things to skip obstacles and rush to objectives isn’t fair because in some cases defense wouldn’t expect anyone to access those areas yet. “Oh set your max fps to 76 and jump like this and this and do that and you can sneak to the thing.” Unless you’re also considering downhill acceleration trick jumping. The engine does weird things with gravity that aren’t realistic causing you to go faster. It’s not very sportsmanlike to use it to skip map triggers. Games lose appeal to me when others find some meta tactic that goes against the intention of the design. When everyone starts focusing on that one thing because it’s the best way for an advantage then the game just gets ridiculous. It’s not being played like a game anymore, it’s cheating without cheating. “I’m not touching you! I’m not touching you!”

(DoHo) #68

It’s a very blurry line. Some stuff like that I’d call glitch exploiting to gain an unfair advantage (speed, mobility) - but then you have things like rocket jumping which have become a legitimate move in some games.

(.Chris.) #69

You do know some of the trick jumps were actually intended? Oasis wall jump been the most famous.

(Crytiqal) #70

ETQW also had trickjumps, intentionally

(Jess Alon) #71

Dude I know how a killcam works. But there are people out there who are so full of themselves that they’d love it if their kills were broadcast to everyone else playing on the server. They get like one kill every 15 minutes and then they hoot and holler over chat annoying their team about how awesome it was. Heh. I hate those guys.

This ^ ^
Nuff said person complaining on how re spawning was too slow. You may remember this one jess.[/QUOTE]

i love long respawn times, it gives me time to write witty comments for everyone on both teams to read.

(Atavax) #73

i would go so far as to say there are no modern shooters where trick jumping was not intentionally allowed by the developers. Yeah, there may of been like 1 or 2 spots in a couple maps that developers never expected even trick jumpers to be able to get to, that they did; but no developer of a shooter isn’t going to know about things such as using gravity to accelerate and increase the distances you can jump, before launch of the game. As people get better at shooting in a game, enemies need to get harder to hit, trick jumping is one of the ways to make enemies harder to hit.

Forgive me for not having the link, but after hearing someone on IGN say there should be CoD like Perks, i facedesked repeatedly until i forgot who i was and created myself a new identity.

(Herandar) #75

You are going to love Brink’s abilities then.

(Weapuh) #76

They will mirror your own abilities of shooting grenades out of the air
