What To Play While We Wait

Jesus.
what kind of gameplay you expect from appz, runing over 5 years-old, hardware ???!
GFX ? forget it !!
AI ? forget it too !
scale ? immersion ? storyline ? no way.

… Demon’s Souls… 382 deaths… This is harsh. Evaluate me!..

Halo Reach and Black Ops for me. Maybe Section 8: Prejudice if it comes out early enough next year. The gameplay I’ve seen so far reminds me somewhat of ETQW, which I only played the demo of, admittedly.
I don’t mind having limited amounts of buttons for a PC game. I find it stunts the gameplay when you have to stop and look for what key to press outside of the WASD range (ie pressing L or J or something).

I agree with BioSnark though, combining keys for multiple tasks is pretty crap… but at the end of the day, if the gameplay is engaging I’m not too fussed. We play a game for the experience and joy of moving and aiming or solving puzzles etc - not by being proud that you can remember 25 button combinations to control the game.
I use a way lot more then 25 buttons.
The default bindings for PC gaming already comes to 25 or more.

And then I also make a lot of custom binds, like class selection, spawnpoint selection, different handling for different classes/vehicles etc.

For BRINK or for any PC game for that matter it would be a shame if we would have to work with the same amount of buttons a controller has (about 10/12?)

(LyndonL) #125

I meant 25 beyond the standard movement/action keys.

At any rate, I hate it. I don’t mind at all if we don’t have too many. First thing I do when I get a new game is rebind the lean keys to use (e) and melee (q). It’s all close to my fingers then. All the immediate action keys.

(DarkangelUK) #126

View any of the configs in the ETQW forum and you’ll see a lot of scripts for combining multiple actions into a single keypress. Idtech4 engine kinda put a dampener on this due to the fact you couldn’t script _actions, but given the chance they would (look at your average ET comp config). I don’t really think it’s the combination of actions on 1 key that’s getting to people, it almost seems as if it’s the fact the player didn’t script it themselves that’s giving them the hump. If it wasn’t there by default, they’d probably go ahead and create the script any way but somehow that would be acceptable.

Quake LIVE.

I think most people don’t want to have the “use” key to do three different things depending on what the game thinks you want to do.

They rather decide for themselves rather then the game trying to predict which could lead to wrong actions.

Say for example the “use” key gives out ammo, or plants a charge, and you wanted to give out ammo instead of charging a bomb. I’d rather have a dedicated button then, as an example.

(Look at Wolfenstein and you’ll see)

Since you can do SMART movement also manually, I am kind of relieved, but I hope that the example I gave can’t happen in BRINK.

(DarkangelUK) #129

If you were wanting to give out ammo instead of planting a charge… don’t stand with your nose pressed against the plant point. You also get highlights to what action has kicked in, a player will highlight to get ammo, or a plant point will highlight to plant the charge. If it got them wrong then i’d say you’re looking in the wrong place. I could see the point with the likes of ET/ETQW where you dropped ammo packs and you could fling them around the ground for people to pick up when they want, with Brink a player has to be looked at and highlighted, this means the ammo giving is much quicker… ET = to ensure they got ammo, run up to player, switch to ammo, throw ammo directly on the dude, switch back to gun. Brink = Look at guy, press X… gun is always at the ready in case you get disturbed.

(LyndonL) #130

Wow… Fine aiming to ensure the use key does what you’re intending it to do… “It adds another layer of depth”…

(Crytiqal) #131

Well, sometimes I would like to plant and not give out ammo, eventho some teammate is standing close to me, hows that :stuck_out_tongue:

A seperate button would do just fine, thanks.

(DarkangelUK) #132

The highlight comes in to play when you reach general area, it’s not a 100% bang on the centre aim that’s required.

Are you just creating meaningless scenarios for the sake of it? Exactly where do you think you would be looking if you were planting? At the plant spot. Unless your team mate is standing between you and the plant spot (which you need to be right up against to plant), then there is no issue.

(Crytiqal) #133

seriously, go play wolfenfail and see what happends

And it’s not meaningless. In a match it could determine win or loss

(DarkangelUK) #134

I’ve played Brink, I know what happens

(Crytiqal) #135

Yes, playing brink on a xbox 360 controller with other first players using an xbox controller is essentially the same as playing a real clan match where every second counts.

(DarkangelUK) #136

We’re talking about how the mechanic works, it’s exactly the same regardless of peripheral or gametype. I explained how its faster and will save your precious seconds, did you miss that part?

(Crytiqal) #137

I fail to see how pressing the ‘use’ button saves seconds, especially if the mechanics do something else then you intended to do, which could be overcome using a seperate button.

Sometimes its better to run up to an objective with your tools out so you can start building immediatly using the mouse1 button, and not having to lift your fingers of the move keys since you already pre-selected, rather then having to compromise movement at the moment supreme by having to press the use key at that particular time.

(It would be even worse if you would have to press and hold the use key)

I am not discussing this anymore, cause the opposing people fail to understand why I feel this way.

(DarkangelUK) #138

Luckily my mouse has more than 2 buttons on it so I don’t have to move away from the movement keys, and if you fail to see how pressing 1 button is quicker than pressing several in sequence than yes, this debate is pointless.

(Crytiqal) #139

I am not talking about pressing multiple buttons in sequence necesarily, since having a use key that has multiple functions could screw up your intentions, thus could even lead to several seconds delay or even death/loss instead of having a seperate key for handing out stuff, or doing an objective.

(DarkangelUK) #140

Yes, and having played it (granted it was only 2 full rounds), the only margin of error I saw was the player, not the system… you’re not gonna be looking at your team mate when you want to prime a charge. Jeez you wouldn’t be doing that in any game, ET, ETQW. Have you get any better theoretical scenarios to discuss? Cos the repair/ammo one wasn’t very good.
