man… why bother letting soldiers have mp40 or thompson when they, when equipped with either of those two weapons, are just weak copies of medics/field ops as they do not have their secondary skills? sure they get maybe 2 more nades… but shouldn’t soldiers start out with full ammo?

i think they are there just to annoy people 
but really, when you play on a server that has restriction on heavy weapons and you choose one restricted one you will spawn as a soldier with normal machine guy…
it would be nice if there would be a warnign instead “you can’t select this weapon, please choose somethign else instead”…
The MP40 Soldier has one purpose and one purpose alone.

It’s the default class that works good for new players who might not know how to use a mortar or portable mg42 right away. This way, at least they can jump into a game and start running around shooting things.

It’s for the noobs so they can learn how to shoot without running around reviving people or being shot for ammo.
On most pubs my team is routinely half SMG soldier.
I always thought it was for nostalgia and accuracy.
I mean, it’s not like every soldier was thrown on to the battlefield with a very expensive peice of hardware …
And it’s the only usefull class for us professionals when the server is full of noobs and the action is getting boring 
(Only when defending as axis, of course

Well, I know a lot people complain about SMG soldiers, sometimes to the point of voting to kick them or tking them, but honestly, someone that new to the game isn’t going to be much of a help no matter what class they play. You may as well just let them run around for a while and get a feel for the game.
And that way they won’t do much damage… I usually advise first timers to go for the SMG simply because the chance of TKs is much smaller than with most other classes. And it’s a very simple role to play, find enemy, shoot at them. None of that tracking down wounded or building objective stuff.

Sometimes I just don’t feel like running around everywhere to answer medic calls and I don’t want to blow anything, I just wanna play an action game and I don’t care much about my personnal total points, then I’m a SOLDIER and I just shoot every enemy in sight just for plain FUN!
This is a game where you can play like a fine strategic master or just shoot em up like a plain wanna have fun gamer.
What is great about this game is that you decide how you will play it.
Don’t touch the SOLDIER, perhaps a little more XP points on frags would be nice but this is a minor details.

Post, the only problem with that is that this is a game that has a firm basis on teamwork. Everyone should be playing an active role…soldiers who use MP40’s/Thompsons are weakening the team and angering those that want to win.
I agree with nakedape, and Iamthefallen. I would rather have a inexperienced gun guy versus a mg/rocket/med/ops/spy who doesn’t know what the heck they are doing, wasting the teams effort, and racking up accidental TKs. At least as a straight shooter they can add to the chaos against the other team.
I’ve seen my fair share of inexperienced players having to learn the objectives, do’s and don’ts, and the flow of the mission on top of having to figure out the nuances of the more technical classes. So don’t knock the soldier too much.
I wish someone would make a mod/server settings that would set a distribution/ratio of the amount of any given class. I hate it when the a team goes “all spy”, “all ops” or you get a team with 5 medics running around healing each other with no engineers. Just a thought.

true true… then make soldiers with thompson/mp40 more preferrable…
I’ve always thought that soldiers should get more max ammo than medics/engineers/field/covert… at highest level the max ammo caps at 120 for most guns… I think soldiers wielding mp40/thompson should be able to carry more ammo than other classes… because they’re more specialized in combat… and perhaps they should start out with 30/90 ammo instead of 30/60… or even 30/120 so soldiers can get into the thick of action without asking for ammo right after spawning
the class should definately be given more to warrant the lack of other skills… more ammo, and xp has been mentioned… but there are other things which could help the soldier and would probably cause more people to play the class…

faster running / better stamina
higher jumps / better strafe jumps
and… err… the ability to catch panzerfausts in their teeth. 
the ability to pick up any weapon
better camauflage (not sure how tho)

Yea, a couple of extra clips (2 extra at start?) would make it a lot better.

yeah the soldier with mp is too weak,… I agree with the idea too make the soldiersclass faster and stronger,…

the engs got the AntiSplashdamage (hoho). probably 10% of the normal damage,…
e. g. The medic is being hit with 25 hitpoints and the soldier in the same situation only with 23 Hitpoints,… the unhelmet medic get a sniped headshot (260),… dead,…the soldier get the headshot,…he can ran away with (120-260+0.1260) 12 Hitpoints and can get some health (or even shoot the panzer). Probably it would be nice if the soldier starts (intern) with a higher skill so it is easier to hit,…
