What card to get?

(caelumstarson) #1

Well i’ve been having a ton of problem’s with all the new games and such i’ve been getting, the problem is my video card. It’s ancient. I don’t know if this is in the wrong forums or w/e so sorry if it is. I need some help on what to get as a new one. Preferably one that will stop my OpenGL problems. Please leave your recomendations. I don’t really want to spend a whole lot on a new card but not something that’s like $25 just something that’s enough to play games like cod2, knights of the old republic advanced warfighter ect. Thanks in advance for the help.

ever considered buying a new pc? u wont be able 2 play much with that im afraid. but if u need a new vidcard for it ill suggest a 6600gt or higher. espec GRAW (Ghost Recon Advanced Warfighter) takes a lot of vidcard power 2 run

Defenetly get a video card. At least GeForce 5+ will do the trick.

(GlobalWar) #4

GF 5 will be great for W:ET…will suck for QWET i bet.

(Moriarty) #5

no one knows the actualy minimum requirements for QW soo asking this question is a little premature… but if you want to know how it will work in a QW(lik) game … download the demo for both quake4 and for doom3… running those might give you a slight look into the future to see if this game engine will run smoothly on your machine… then again it is a revamp of the Q4/D3 engine in its own rights so there could be a huge difference as wto what you actually need to run it… personally i am upgrading all my machines to the 7 series from nVidia just to make sure that i can turn on all the sweet eye candy and enjoy the game to its fullest… there is another post here:

http://www.splashdamage.com/index.php?name=pnPHPbb2&file=viewtopic&t=15048

on how to upgrade and/or build a new system to get ready for the release of ET:QW…

ill be happy to answer all these questions there…

(caelumstarson) #6

lol… ok scrat GRAW from the list, I’ve been looking at some radeon cards, any you can suggest?

We can be more helpful if you give us a rough idea of how much you want to spend, and what sort of games you want to be able to play.

(caelumstarson) #8

Sorry, i would have posted more but it wouldn’t let me post after. I want to be able to play call of duty 2, Knights of the old republic, all the other games i have run fine or are a bit laggy. Right now i’m thinking the Radeon 9200 128MB DDR AGP 8X Bilingual card. Does anyone know if it’s compatable with my computer? I want soemthing around that price range.

my friend coughed up 200 for a X1800XT 256mb…wow what a card.

(raztafar1an) #10

Ugh, that card is about 5 generations to old to play those games. If you are on a budget I’d suggest getting an nVidia card for one (fan boy) and getting like the Geforce 6200.

I’ve got my piggy bank saved up  and is on hold until 2007

:moo: gunna be f’n sweet :rocker2:

(Nail) #12

ATI - at least 9600
nVidia - at least FX5700

9200 will dissapoint you

(caelumstarson) #13

Do you know where i could possibly get a nVidia or ATI? I live in canada so…

I did manage to find these:

SAPPHIRE 100562L-GN Radeon 9600PRO 256MB DDR AGP 4X/8X Video Card - Retail
SAPPHIRE 100575L-RD Radeon 9600XT 256MB GDDR2 AGP 4X/8X Video Card - OEM
SAPPHIRE 100562L-GN Radeon 9600PRO 256MB DDR AGP 4X/8X Video Card - OEM

do you know if newegg ships to canada?

(Nail) #14

so do I, here in Manitoba there are several computer warehouse stores, other than that, Best Buy, Future Shop, Circuit City (Source{ex radio Shack}) e-bay, Office Depot, just about anywhere outside Zellers or Wal-Mart

(caelumstarson) #15

sorry, i edited after you posted

(caelumstarson) #16

would the cards i posted above do the job?

(Nail) #17

for now the XT would be best, but I’d wait till release of QW, prices will come down, and afaik, newegg ships anywhere

(caelumstarson) #18

Open Box: SAPPHIRE 100575L-RD Radeon 9600XT 256MB 128-bit GDDR2 AGP 4X/8X Video Card - OEM
$49.99
LOL i don’t think it will go lower…

(ayatollah) #19

Jeez you are on a strict budget, wait until QW is released and buy something second hand. Thats the only way you are going to get anything half-decent in a similar price bracket. Think you need to raise your limit a little though if you are talking about CAN$50 ~ £23?!

Try a 7600 GS - they start at about 100€. When you have some additional Euros left, take a look at the 7600GT.

http://www.3dchip.de/Grafikchipliste/Leistung_Graka.htm
http://www.computerbase.de/artikel/hardware/grafikkarten/2006/test_msi_geforce_7600_gs/5/ (text in German, but alot of nice diagrams ;))

When the next generation of graphic cards come out (for NVidia I think in Sept./Oct.) prices will drop. And when you want to buy the card for ET:QW - wait until ET:QW is out and buy it then.
