What card to get?

(Eddmarkus) #21

not the fx card, its like a budget version of the real ones :stuck_out_tongue: (got a FX5500 for this pc and i can even run d3 with deasent settings, cant run prey or equal with lowest and ive got 256mb :stuck_out_tongue: + ive got p4 3.2 and 1024 ram so its the card!) get a new computer or get a card thats around 100$ mabye a 6series (a gt is not bad) or a radeon x1300 or higher

(EB) #22

Some of the GeForce 7300’s, if not all of them, are 7600 boards.
…why bother getting a fx5series when you can get a 7300 or 7600 for less $ in some cases. All budget cards are not equal. Shop around.

I would say a 6800(if you can find a good one) or a 7 series…why digress with older cards that cost almost the same amount ?

(caelumstarson) #23

when does QW come out? So i know when prices are gunan drop.

(SCDS_reyalP) #24

It has not been announced yet. Sometime in the first quarter of next year is probably a good guess.

The $50 9600XT will be a big improvement over the SIS thing you have now. I’d say if that is the most you want to spend, it’s probably a good deal. It will play older games (like ET) without much trouble, and will play newer games at relatively low detail and FPS.

Chances are you would need a compete system upgrade to get good performance in ET:QW.

I have a FX5700, cap at 125 in ET, can run F.E.A.R. at low settings online

(caelumstarson) #26

lol, i don’t think i mentioned that i was getting quake wars… someone just put that out there… BTW would i be able to install the card by myself?

Erm i hate to ask but does anyone have a old card just laying around… LOL.
It’s not that i’m cheap it’s just that i bought a new $200 hard drive like 2 weeks ago and i was almost not allowed to get that and if i wanted to buy something now i know they’d say no :frowning:

If i do have to buy a new card someone do me a favour and go to:

http://onlineelectronics.secure-shopping-online.com/onlineelectronics/index_en.jsp

and give me your recommendations. I know there on the expensive side but if i wanted to buy it’s close to where i live and i could get it without anyone knowing :stuck_out_tongue:

(Nail) #27

good deal, I’d go with that, they’re easy to install, just plug in slot

(Brandon) #28

Just a question about what to get best for QW.
Is it best to get a 6800GT or a 7600GS? or ill just wait ill christmas , let the stuff get cheap and buy a 7900GT?
And when DX10 cards get released are DX10 better than the current DX9 cards?

(raztafar1an) #29

The DX10 cards will be a lot better, but who knows when a game will be released to take advantage of DX10 features. The new id game is suppose to use DX10, but that may not be out for another 2-3 years. If you want to play Quake Wars and need a new card I’d just wait till the 7900GT goes down in price, or if you have the money buy a DX10 card.

(Nail) #30

DX10 is Vista only, so remember to add $230 - $400 extra for Vista O/S

(Brandon) #31

Than , ill get the 7900GT , I got no extras to spend on a new OS , yet

(SCDS_reyalP) #32

It’s not hard. Do make sure that your computer has the correct slot for the card you buy.
A 9600XT is an AGP card. Many newer cards are PCI-E

Most older motherboards have AGP, some cheap ones only have PCI.

Newer motherboards usually have PCI-E and PCI. You can’t use a PCI-E card in a normal PCI slot.

I remember reading a comment on a tech site, something along the lines of this:
“Windows Vista” price announced and it does not come with a computer.

OT:
Microsoft stole loads of code from loads of developers, they pay out millions per month to these people/companies after courtbattles that their lawyer-teams could not win.
How are they covering their loses ? …by raising Vista’s price to $400.
(The lesson I learned from it: steal code to make programs to sell, get caught, pay re-imbursement, raise prices to cover re-imbursements.)

:stuck_out_tongue:

(caelumstarson) #34

LOL! btw my mother board is the K7S41GX if that helps any, just to know if i have the right one for that card.

(SCDS_reyalP) #35

That’s an AGP motherboard. Specs here: http://www.asrock.com/PRODUCT/K7S41GX.htm

(Nail) #36

if you get a new graphics card, make sure onboard graphics adapter is turned off in bios, and of course update new cards drivers

(Nail) #37

little off topic, but very interesting AMD buys ATI

(Brandon) #38

Heard that before Nail , kinda wack…

There are several DX10 games due out straight away as I understand it EA’s Crysis being one (not that I’d touch another EA product after the way they nerfed BF2 :banghead: ).

That said, the great advance isn’t DX10 its self but Shader Model 4.0 which unleases big performance gains on rendering supposedly. So to anyone considering buying a DX10 card make sure it supports Shader Model 4.0 as the word is some early ones might not, which could mean your card has a very short life if you like the very latest games!!!

As for specific advice for the post starter, don’t go over the top with a card because:

a) DX10 & Shader Model 4.0 are just around the corner and

b) Your CPU will bottleneck your Graphics Card’s performance which means if you buy a cutting edge card you’ll probably get lag because your CPU is maxed out

Personally, I’d pick something middle of the range and think of upgrading my whole PC ASAP. If you can afford it now, then go for a total upgrade.

As an aside the minimum CPU for Vista is an Athlon 64 3000+ according to the Microsoft website.

Al.

so umm would the Open Box: SAPPHIRE 100575L-RD Radeon 9600XT 256MB 128-bit GDDR2 AGP 4X/8X Video Card - OEM card be compatable with my motherboard?
