Ways to improve FPS

Since they are in the pk4 can I just type /exec preset_fastest.cfg in the console?

(snort snort - he said pk4 - quick where’s the reply button)

I’m sticking with Nvidia for the moment as it was only “the other day” my 128 MB GF4 Ti4600 was the big dog on the block, I can safely see me either not getting a DX 9 card or waiting 'til the DX 10 (or X or whatever it will be called) cards come out and then picking up the best DX 9er for pennies.

i do the price to FPS math to determine if upgrading a grfx card is worth it. from what weve seen, ET does not run that much faster on a 400$ card than a 120$$ card …

if I was building new soup to nuts right now …

The great thing is that reasonably good video cards are dirt cheap now as well.

I have a spare amd 1800+ cpu, a mobo 512 pc2100 ram, SB 128 soundcard and a network card and very soon I’m ordering a 120 GB HDD (will swap a 60 from the big machine for it), a mini tower £12 case (about $18 for the yankies) a very cheap dvd cd-rw combo and an Nvidia FX 5200 128 mB tv out for about £60 ($90). Now all that is put together and plugged into my nice 32" WS telly downstairs and not only have I got a complete entertainment system but I have a reasonable ET/gaming machine also once I set up the network and it has net access too. .

I enjoyed typing that and may have been showing off as I am a right bastard. .

I get decent results from my machine, it’s a dual P3-800 with a GeForce 4 MX440. The damn motherboard has no AGP port (it’s a server motherboard), so I’m stuck with a PCI graphics card. The machine runs linux and I’ve had no probs at all. I tend to get decent FPS (30-50) most of the time.

Neither ET nor RTCW are multithreaded, so the ignorant masses assume a dual processor machine doesn’t benefit these games. However if you look at the process table it shows ET completely using one processor (consistently >97%) and the other processor is fairly busy with X11 (~20%). If it wasn’t for the dual processors that load would sit on a single CPU, so having an SMP system is a benefit for ET.

How do I disable antialiasing and anisotropic filtering?

(Vaticool) #27

The AGP 4X mode is eight times faster than PCI !! http://www.matrox.com/mga/archive_story/mar99/agp_advantage.cfm
Since I didn’t see any difference between Athlon 1GHz and Athlon 2200+, I am very surprised you can get decent result with PCI with your dual P3-800 :???:

The ignorant masses also know that it may depend on the OS
I remember I heard a story about quadri proc under NT that get CPU utilisation like 100% - 10 % - 0% - 0% with every app  Take care : Your CPUs might fell asleep between each PCI transfer

I get an average of 60-80fps indoors, and 50-60 outdoors, and on maps like radar and railgun, framerate is about 45-60. My pc specs is an AMD Athlon XP 2100+ with t-bred ‘b’ core, 512mb ddr sdram, windows xp home and a geforce4 ti4200 overclocked to 4400 speeds

Actually the folks at Nvidia are pretty good about their PCI parts: their PCI parts seem to support a 66 mhz bus if your motherboard’s chipset can do it. The server motherboard I’ve got supports 66 mhz for a few slots, one of which the PCI graphics card sits in. Try “lspci -v” on a linux machine. That should put the Nvidia PCI card in AGP 1x territory.

But you are right of course, a proper AGP slot on any recent motherboard has a potentially greater transfer rate.

I don’t understand how someone can see no difference in FPS between a 1.2 and XP2200!

My system:
XP2200
Gforce4 Ti4600
512 MB PC3200 DDRAM
SOYO KT-400 Dragon Ultra Black
SB Live! X-Gamer
Windows XP Home Edition

I get 90+ FPS in open areas at 1280x1024 with all game settings on HIGH. …and that is with Norton Internet Security and Antivirus versions 2003 running in the tray. However, games coming out soon will make my PC inadequate for gaming (DOOM III engine for example). Truly the video card makes a bigger difference in FPS that the processor, but the AMD XP2000 equals the performance of a P4 2.4 ghz (yes it does, do the research) at almost everything, and it’s about 1 1/2 times the power of an AMD 1.2 ghz.

The simplest way to improve FPS is the good 'ole low resolution mode. If FPS is too low, set the game to 800x600, or less if necessary. I used to play RTCW on an AMD 1.4 and a lowly Radeon 7200 w/only 32 MB of vid mem and still got 70-85 FPS at 1024x768. Yes, I realize that Wolf ET needs a bit more power that RTCW.

However, if your FPS are less than 60 with an AMD 1.2+ and Gforce3+ or ATI 7200+ at 1024x768, something is very wrong. Something is eating your system resources, or your system has drivers/software issues that are holding it back. For one thing, make sure that you have the latest VIA drivers if your MB uses a VIA bridge/s.

As for buying a new video card, that might be a bad decision at this time (unless you can find a Gforce4 Ti4600 for less than $125). The latest chipsets from NVIDIA and ATI (as of July 03’) will get you only 30-50 FPS in the DOOM III test. Even these cards will not be sufficient for the games that will be hitting the shelves in the coming months or year. I suggest living with what you have for maybe 1 year. By then, 2 more generations of cards will be out and some models newer than today’s will be at a reduced price and they will still provide good performance in these new games. Surely the game makers will always be pushing our vid cards to the closet, but an investment in a vid card at current prices is just a waste.

tweak your sound settings, this will “boost” your fps (it does in my rtcw)

s_mixahead is a good one

To cope with radar I think you need a Geforce 4200TI minimum unless you have a small low res monitor and are happy with 640x480 800x600, but not only does it look bad stretched on a large high res capable monitor its a serious disadvantage on medium/long range shots on the very same map.

What I would like to know is why can’t the texture quality on the foliage be reduced surely this would improve FPS.

Even a Radeon 9800 Pro goes down to 40FPS at 1600x1200 in F2 on the grid facing the fence leading to the Allied spawn. Thats on an empty server the other maps are fine with lows of 90FPS, but mostly up against the 125FPS cap.

I can only get close to this on Radar if I use 1024x768 not really what I bought the card for.

(n00ber) #33

My s_mixahead is set at 0.02… is that good?

if it’s low, you’ve got bad sound quality, but it helps the fps up

(n00ber) #35

I don’t care about sound quality lol… so can I make it 0?

(fretn) #36

probably not, try it

(squadjot) #37

lol… i had AMD 1,4 with radeon7200 64mb ddr…and yes tweaked i could get above 120 iside…but down to 35 in combat…and strikes and all…

…ITS NOT ENOUGH TO HOST A SERVER YOURSELF…and then make FPS measures from that…other players…and actions on map takes alot of FPS too…

Now i got 2,533 p4…same videocard…

i run down to 25 (absolute lowest)…when im on radar map…with the grass…and i have tweaked. so YES…ET SUCKS POWER OUT OF YOUR COMPUTER :stuck_out_tongue:

(im getting my 9700pro tomorrow.)

(Blackrock) #38

How do i see what my FPS is?
thanks

(Ragnar_40k) #39

Type

/cg_drawfps 1

into console or add the line

seta cg_drawFPS "1"

to your cfg-file (the cfg-files are named etconfig.cfg and are located inside the <ETPath>\etmain\profiles<PlayerName> subdirectory). Your fps will be shown at the right side below the timer.

i got Radeon9700pro (ati’s from last year) … and its a pleasure!

i run 1024 x 768 and got 125 fps most of the time…

specs: p4 NorthWood2 2,533mhz - 512mb ddr333 - intel mobo i845
