Video Card

(CrankBait) #1

I recently installed a GeForce 4 4200Ti 128MB video card on my machine (WIN XP). I was running a GeForce 2 32MB before and ET ran fine. After I installed the new card, all my other games ran fine except ET. When I would join a server, it would run for about 10 seconds then lock up my computer (I would have to reboot!) I played with some of the video settings and it still locked up. I reinstalled my GeForce 2 and ET worked fine again. Does anyone know of any issues with ET and a GeForce 4 4200 Ti video card??? TIA!

been answered many a time so many times I should just say search but I’ll be nice; the latest NVidia drivers cause your pc to freeze after a couple of seconds when you enter a punkbuster enabled server so just install the gf4 then use the old drivers and all should be fine

Sticky threads seem to be as hard to find as the search button though. :bored:

Hey I was wondering. Where can i get these old NVidia drivers? I have a NVidia GeForce 4 Ti with AGP8x video card. Please tell me if you know.

just go to www.nvidia.com and click like you would used to do. But before downloading an new driver, look to your left and youll see Driver Archive or something like that.

I recently upgraded to a new card, but when I was using my Ti4200 I found the 45.23 version of the Detonator drivers to be the best. All the versions since do essentially nothing to improve the performance of the Ti4200, at best, and cause frustrating problems, at worst.

You can grab the Detonator 45.23 drivers right here:
http://www.nvidia.com/object/winxp-2k_45.23.html

P.S. You need to make absolutely sure that you have the latest drivers for your motherboard - these include AGP drivers. If you don’t know what chipset your mobo uses, just post the brand and model of your mobo, here.

You have to use pre 5x.xx detonator drivers for the game to work. I really wish that this would be fixed, but apparently after 4 months our requests have fallen on deaf ears.

got a GF3 ; updated today for 53.xx whql drivers and “voila” : freeze within seconds, plus manual hardcore reboot…

I’m sorry to say that but we shouldn’t have to keep an old videocard driver in order to play this game holy sake !!
Please SD do something about that, give us a tiny patch whatever it 'd be for PB or else

(BondyBoy007) #16

The whole point is that the 5x.xx series of drivers add absolutly nothing to the functionality/performance of the pre FX series Nvidia cards. In many cases the performance is worse, I’m currently at 43.something as when I upgraded to 45 I lost over 100 performance points in 3d mark.

Theres no need to keep a copy of the older drivers as they are available from the Nvidia website simply by searching their website for the version no of the drivers your require (eg 45)

For holys sake, why did you update to the 53 drivers when you’ve got such an old card

BondyBoy007 speaks much sense. Do you need to have drivers installed that support all the latest features for a card you don’t own and yet haven’t changed anything for your card in several iterations? Nope. I stopped upgrading my GF4Ti128mbAGP8x drivers after an upgrade ruined ET and mangled DoD. I’m not missing anything by not doing so (and every game I play plumbs along fantastically well with all the settings whacked up to max).

I hardly think it’s SD’s responsibility to patch PB/ET to cope with a problem introduced by shoddy GFX card drivers.

Why thank you, I’ll pay you later

fwiw Nvidia sent me an email a while ago to say they replicated the problem (first time they replied they said they couldnt replicate the problem) and they said they’re working on a fix.

It’s not as simple saying people with pre-FX cards have no use with the newer drivers. It’s nearly always very true that there is no, at at best very little game performance increase when e.g. using a GF3 with 4x.xx series, or GF4 with 5x.xx series, but some newer games do need newer drivers. Deus Ex2 and Far Cry come to mind as requiring 5x.xx series (though cant say I bothered to try many different ones out), yes even if you have a GF3 or GF4. That said, I wouldnt reccomend anyone upgrade their drivers unless they are having problems, or the driver notes specifically mention an improvement for a game where you could really do with it (which counts as a “problem” as I mean it here).
