Unreal Engine

(EnderWiggin.DA.) #1

Hello SD,
I have a question. It has been stated that you are moving to the Unreal Engine. UE 3? UE4? I’m not really sure. UE3 isn’t really know as a PC friendly engine for FPS, multiplayer games. The engine has perhaps the worst mouse code ever and suffers from serious hit detection (or net code) issues (general term). Additionally, usually little thought is give to allowing reasonable editing of cvars in UE3 as even reasonable cvars are locked or hidden in direct console ports. Perhaps all of this is due to various developers not caring about the PC platform, I don’t know.

My questions are simple:
Assuming you will be using an Unreal engine for future games, will you address these issues for your PC customers in future games? Have you budgeted man hours to ensure that high DPI mice do not suffer? Will you continue to give the end user the control that they are accustomed to in SD games?

To me, these are fairly serious issues and better addressed early in development rather than in the last 3 months.

T:A uses UE3, it has fairly good hit detection. And I ping 100+ all the time but still haven’t noticed anytime where I missed a shot cuz of ping. I haven’t had problems with sensitivity probably because I use 450 dpi but lot of my friends have complained about mouse problems with T:A.

The main problems I have with UE3 is lack of first person spectating and recording demos.

We also identified and have since addressed many of the issues you’ve mentioned; it was one of our first things we did when we made the engine switch. We can be more specific when the project is formally announced.

Exedore: without giving too much away, may I ask if there is anything that really excites you about the engine, or the change in general?

Well, I’ve spent a lot of my career as a Level Designer, and worked on 3 games based on Unreal… so it’s a bit familiar for me (even if those were a long time ago now!). UnrealEd has been in use for so long and for so many different types of games, that it’s become a great development tool. Prototyping and iterating are much easier in general.

Also, as it’s been the forerunner for students and hobbyists for a while along with being such an industry mainstay, that it’s much easier to find people who have worked with it before.

Whatever you’re up to - If it involves anything related to shooter, there’s been a horrible lack lately from all studios: linux dedi server and and mod/map support, please!

Thanks for the prompt replies Exedore. Very much appreciated.

Still looks like plastic though.

I think the main feature is the particle and lightening effects. As for the rest, the diminishing returns on graphical performance each engine really show.

UE4? No offense, but it just doesn’t look as impressive as a modded Doom 3. I hope the source is wrong.

I love unrealed for ease of use for a casual mapper like me. It’s super easy to block out levels, place actors/entities/etc…the learning curve is much shallower than for Radiant, IMO…

I found it insanely hard to get used to after years of using radiant exclusively

Not sure I’ll be mapping any more but I do hope custom content is supported and properly managed.

Not impressed of UE4 tough, all the new features were already included in CE3.

The scenes are like night and day. I don’t see how this could possibly compare.

They will finally have a UNREAL 4 video demo next week at E3, those screenshots are not that great.

(tokamak) #17

A new Unreal singleplayer would make sense. UT3 kind of (undeservedly) bombed so a fourth one is unlikely. The Gears of War trilogy has ended and Bulletstorm wasn’t really anything.

(DarkangelUK) #18

Gears of War has ended from the current protagonists POV, Cliff Bleszinski said he thinks the story of the current lot has been told and he’d like to see the universe from someone elses viewpoint. Not exactly concrete, but casts heavy doubt on the GoW series being done and dusted.

I really enjoyed the utter silliness of Bulletstorm - shame a sequel isn’t on the cards.
