I don’t know, most devs seem old enough to have possibly experienced the old school FPS’s themselves.
I blame publishers who apparently think any kind of challenge is going to scare players away.

I don’t have a TV. I am the father of two kids and I play games on a PC. In which of you clichés do I fit?

The founders of Splash Damage go back to the RTCW modding days. That was my reason to have interest in Brink. Partially it was satisfied.
To the OP.
Don’t get so down bud. Theres a ton of great stuff coming out that we know about and even more that we don’t know about i’m sure.
My biggest letdown for the holiday releases is Rage being primarily a single player experience, but at least they’re tacking on a fun coop and some kind of buggy racing MP. Given their pedigree it could be really fun.
But Battlefield 3 looks to be new and innovative, new engine and everything. Rage while not the next big MP shooter, features ID Tech 5 engine (Brink is built on ID Tech 4) for the first time. So thats exciting and devs will have that engine to work with in the future.
We also have MW3 this November, which even though Infinity Ward is a shell of their former selves we can most likely bet it will at least be a competent MP shooter for those who like the CoD style. Not to mention finally finishing the story of Soap MacTavish and Captain Price.
Gears 3 looks and plays very impressive. Not a FPS, but a great game for sure thats guaranteed to have an amazing campaign with 4 player coop, and amazing multi-player.
I’d love to see a great classic Quake game again. I really enjoyed Quake III Revolution on the PS2. Would just love another good fast-paced FPS that doesn’t feature iron sighting for a change, or the massive health pools of Halo.
I’m hoping it gives me the same enjoyment I got from the original. I wasn’t real big on Invisible War.
Umm, you can play PC’s games on on the couch as well, since they have controller support, and you can hook them up to a TV…
As for playing next to your girlfriend while she sleeps- that’s just weird, and a bit creepy. Maybe I’m just old fashioned, but I know when I’m trying to sleep, I don’t want noise and distraction near me - this goes for my wife as well. When she’s sleeping and I’m playing games, she want’s me as far away as possible so she can, you know, actually sleep.
I agree Horse, other person is a total moron for having a different opinion and liestyle then you. I mean really who the **** does he think he is being different and all.
And honestly enough from all you assholes with the “you can hook a pc up to your tv”
-well maybe people use their computers for things other then gaming
-maybe other people use the computer and having it on the main tv in the house is inconvientant to those wanting to use the computer or those wanting to watch tv.
-maybe people dont want to hear loud ass computer fans when trying to play
-maybe people like to have the tv on in the background while playing games for sports/events
-maybe people find it more worth it to have a cheaper living room friendly multimedia device that does the basics of everything easily on their main tv rather then spending upwards of $1000 (very few want to build their own for cheaper) for a machine they may only want to use for gamming as they dont have a use for 99% of the features on their computer because between their gaming/multimedia console, cellphone and or work computer have no use for.
-maybe people dont even play games enough to warrant the need for a gaming pc at all, i know plenty of guys who game hard when they can but not nearly enough overall to make it worth it to spend the money for a gameing pc that they need to upgrade every so often for the 1-2 games they are playing.
-maybe there are many other good reasons but i have run out of time a patience to continue writing more, please anyone feel free to add your good and totally valid reasons for not owning or wanting a gameing pc. Sure they would be nice to have but for many there are more reasons not to have on then to have one.
Nah man, everyone plays console’s whilst there bitches sleep these days, you been living under a rock?

I have a baccalaureate degree in bio, so you tell me who’s the total moron. Who the **** do I think I am? Well, let’s see… I’m attending med school next year and one parent makes more than your family combined. I also play ball and box, and I’m ****ing amazing at both. So who the **** do I think I am being different and all? I think I’m ****ing better than you. I love little ****s like you who attack me on a personal level.
HAHAHAHAHA totally agree, doesnt matter the age either, teens up to 40+yr olds commenly do it these days, almost everyone i game with who live with or have women over for the night tend to do it on the reg if they arent planning on getting anything that night or already took care of business. Games are a great way to unwind afterwards… so long as you creep back into bed before they awake, otherwise it may become a problem then!
Why don’t you stay away on your sofa and let the person express his opinion, even though you don’t like it? It is still a question who is a kid here. I recommend to start first by just trying to imagine that the guy might be right.
I agree with OP, the time of simple, fast and longlasting FPS is gone forever. But not only because of the game developers rushing or publishers going for money whoring. Also not only because of the mass-media mainstream spotlighting.
Like someone mentioned some time ago in one of the similar threads - a huge part of the problem is that we (the old-skool fps gamers) are getting older. We are not the same youngsters anymore. Our game perception is not the same as it was when all of those shooter games were the first and original, truly groundbreaking and gamestyle inventive pieces of software. Also the development of online gaming communities and online gaming as such was new then and the process of participating in the rise of those communities was a lot of fun in itself. Nowadays, the communities are blending into each other, with the internet multigaming platforms and clan/pro/pub behaviour rulesets already long established - the player base just migrates to next games and uses the community platforms of previous games as a basis. It IS different nowadays… not SO exciting… as back then. We are getting old.
It doesn’t though mean the younger generations wouldn’t enjoy the present games as much as we did then. If you do gaming - you gotta enjoy what you got, so they are more dedicated to the contemporary stuff than we are, without any hindsight of the fun benchmark of old games that they missed out. These games are 100% fun to them, which is fair enough to me.
Lol calm down doucher, either you didnt read my whole post or maybe you really are the moron here???
I dont see how the sarcasm got past you, it was clearly me pointing out why he is being narrowminded and a dick toward other peoples situations. but after reading your post i must say you are quite a piece of work yourself.
I never said I didn’t while she sleeps -I said I didn’t play right next to her while she sleeps.
Oh, you’re one of those people… You have a degree and make a descent salary, so you must obviously be better than those who don’t…
Generalise much? I’m as much a console gamer as the next man, but also grew up with PC fps and am saddened by the current state of online fps. For all the technical and graphical advancements in recent years the core gameplay has been horribly dumbed down, and largely to cater for console fps that can’t handle fast gameplay due to the pads.
i love how people articulate degrees over the internetz.
Youtube-comments style
Consolers should understand the frustration the PCers are coming through. Games were dumbed down, simplified in order to carter the mainstream market. That doesnt mean that when you play console your dumb. It just means that you swallow the mainstream,
and well mainstream is usually more dumb ; P
Sadly, I’m pretty sure we will never again experience any FPS games as good as those from the 1999~2005 era.
Q3, RTCW, CoD1/CoD2, etc. Even non-idTech games like CS and UT were just priceless games with addictive multiplayer gameplay. Back then, I used to look forward to turning my computer on and spending HOURS on servers. Now, with bland, boring, poorly-optimized crap like Brink it’s just hard to find the motivation anymore
It really is a shame. I’d hate to be a kid being raised in this era of PC gaming. They’ve truly missed out on good games. Maybe that’s why all of them play consoles these days. Oh well, it was fun while it lasted.
What’s with the terrible hate? What’s the matter, u so mad, bro? Brink is a good game. Perhaps you are struggling in today’s tough times, but don’t take it out on all new games, painting with such a broad brush. Games coming out are slammed so harshly, but I remember like yesterday how awesome I thought the original Doom or Unreal Tournament was, and those games look so dated and archaic now compared to todays games.
Lighten up. Games are entertainment. If you are not entertained by them, do something else like play guitar or piano. Learn a foreign language.
