The era of good FPS titles has long since passed and is not returning

Sure, they’re not as fast as, say, UT or Quake. But if you just want arena shooters, you’re pretty much narrowing your interests.
More than fast pacing is needed for something to be an arena shooter, although that is often part of it too.

Also as far as narrowing down interests goes, mainstream FPS releases nowadays bear resemblance to each other more than ever before. If anything it’s the publishers taking advantage of the CoD retard populations narrow interests :stroggtapir:

You get what I’m going at.

And I couldn’t agree more. It’s a terrible shame indeed.

The last real fun game was Quake 4. No worring about perks and shyte, pure fragging.
Yep, RTCW, 2001 - 2003 were the golden years for me, active community (with a proper community feel), more leagues / ladders / cups than you could shake a stick at, well known and popular servers (anyone remember Jolt3?), good banter to be had, big personalities, top teams, ah, those were the days …

tbh Brink could have that if they :-

 1. Made it a proper PC game (bindable controls for everything rather than 1 button does all)
 2. Added decent text chat (different colours for team / global and a wider text display area), especially in-between rounds so players could exchange GG’s or whatever
 3. VOIP that actually works (at least set the defaults so it doesn’t require any thought / effort to use)

At the moment Brink lacks many things, but the biggest thing it lacks is a soul. :(
1. A lobby system
 2. A built in clan system

Edit: We wait for Counter-Strike 2 to be our savior! Until that day… we play Brink, BF3, Brink 2, BF4, Brink 3, BF5, etc.

as sad as the trend is that developers are catering to consoles (or being pushed in that direction because of publisher investment), it’s just as sad to consider how much whining and negativity there is in EVERY single game community.

Seriously, if you dislike a game so much, show the publishers/developers you actually mean it by not buying their stuff ever again. Grow some balls, break that gaming addiction and make a stand.

A large majority of these gripes are anything but constructive… or they take a few constructive points and turn them into harsh criticisms that mark the extended death of FPSing.

Lounge room athlete syndrome is what this is… if you’re such an expert on how the developers have failed at developing the game, go make your own. There are plenty of tools and tutorials out there that make it incredibly easy to achieve nowadays.

As long as capitalism is around so will people who make games.
1 person not buying it doesnt effect others.
As long as games are made there will be people who buy them.

It’s not about effecting others, it’s about having a spine.

And that’s precisely why things don’t change… too many people are cowardly sheep and use the excuse that standing out from the herd won’t make a difference, so all this whining is redundant.
Agreed with OP.

And everything cause of the ****ing consoles, this ****ty,old, rusty hardwarecrap. >.<
If there would be no consoles we would say crysis 1 and crysis 2 has ****ty graphics by now.

I swear i hate consoles so much.

If Brink would have been a PC only shooter we would have a WAY WAY WAAAAY better game now iam sure.
You need a life, you angry little ackney riddled lemming.

Also might i add most of you sound like smack head’s not getting good gear of there guy.

I always break my rule [Don’t buy FPS games that are released on consoles before or at the same time they are released on PC]. I always break it because the game I’m buying has a chance of being played competitively and that’s how I love playing my FPS games.

With all these new FPS games I don’t have a feeling of accomplishment when I kill x amount of people at once, just because it’s so easy to do so, I don’t need to think about what I’m doing I just run around and spray my cannon [sup cod]. Where as if I load up quake live, I get my arse handed to me, but when I do make those awesome rails or rockets it feels so awesome. Same thing for CS, hitting those 1 deags is great, I just don’t get that feeling anymore with all these new games.

I don’t have an urge to play Brink just because of the performance issues with ATI, but when I have played it, playing a team based game with public players [casual players] is so horrible, I just hope they make something like cssmixes.co.uk for brink.

(Szakalot) #33

games got diluted to target the mainstream console populace. So they got easier, easier, easier. Hardly any game now is difficult, and expects you to think before you act.

However,

the general populace, even among consolers will finally give way to more hardcore parts of it as well.

So again, you will see, well budgeted games that give enough money back to the devs. to reason making them in first place.

After all, its all about the money.

(H0RSE) #34

Just remember - history repeats itself. The gaming ways of old will make a comeback, for those who weren’t around to experience them the first time.

(Hyrage) #35

I agree with the OP, but keep in mind that the problem could be the new generation of game developers that lack the understanding of what made FPS fun 10 years ago and they are all in love with Noob of Duty.

(Shotgun Surgeon) #36

Yeah, I agree. Some of these PC elitists are annoying. My favorite part about consoles is how I can actually play with my friends next to me. Or how I can lie down on the couch with my girlfriend when she’s sleeping and play videogames at the same time. I’m pretty sure if my ass was glued to some chair with my back hunched and my nose glued to the computer screen, my girlfriend would ****ing leave me. You PC elitists need to get a life. Not everyone wants to own a computer and ****ing alienate all their REAL friends.

(H0RSE) #37

Umm, you can play PC’s games on on the couch as well, since they have controller support, and you can hook them up to a TV…

As for playing next to your girlfriend while she sleeps- that’s just weird, and a bit creepy. Maybe I’m just old fashioned, but I know when I’m trying to sleep, I don’t want noise and distraction near me - this goes for my wife as well. When she’s sleeping and I’m playing games, she want’s me as far away as possible so she can, you know, actually sleep.

And as for the glued to a chair hunched over remark - PC gamers are aware of this…It’s like making fun of a Prius owner because they drive a Hybrid - they know it’s a hybrid…you’re not offending them.

(Jak Swift) #38

Dont get me wrong, i dont mind pc, i use both, not so much pc now, but i only use my pc for mmo’s, consoles are more relaxing, chillin on my sofa with a spliff, passin it around (controller and spliff that is) party’d up.

Yeah I guess maybe you guys ARE old-fashioned. But when we’re on the couch and we’re done watching a movie or done doing something else (let your imagination run wild), she usually says “Want to play videogames while I take a nap?” And like hell I’m gonna pass THAT offer up. She doesn’t mind videogames as long as I’m not screaming into the mic. And when she’s watching TV and I want to sleep, I don’t mind the noise either.

Maybe it’s a sign you’re getting old.

(H0RSE) #40

Maybe it’s a sign you’re getting old.

yeah maybe…or it could be that we are both really light sleepers, which is the actual case.
