Tattooes in the industry...

(MyDemise) #1

I am a student, currently learning the ways of the industry, with a dream of eventually making it into your company somewhere down the line.

My question is, if someone, such as myself, approached Splash Damage, with an amazing portfolio/showreel, great credentials and a great degree but had several visible tattooes and piercings, would this greatly effect your decision as to whether you would employ him/her?

The reason i ask is, i have several large tattooes, none that are visible at the moment, however in the long run id like to go for some serious coverage, however i wouldnt want it to affect my chances in the industry.

There are several people here with tattoos, afaik.
In general; as long as your work is good enough, what you look like shouldn’t really matter :).

God knows how many tattoos Salteh really has
Afterall, he’s the mascot, he should have the SD logo painted everywhere

Raw talent and personality fit speaks volumes, your physical appearance (tattoos and piercings alike) bares no relevance to our hiring decisions.
And yes as Salteh rightly points out we have our fair share here

I find it’s somewhat regional; for example, tattoos are far more common and accepted on the West coast of the US than the East coast, England vs the rest of Western Europe vs Eastern Europe, etc.

While the Gimp is certainly correct that talent and personality come up trumps, it does depend a bit on how ‘extreme’ you go… in many areas of development communication is vital, and you don’t want to make people uncomfortable (a suit can do this just as badly!). Basically, enough facial tattoos to look like a demon might be pushing it a little.

As I’ve learnt in life - If you’ve got the talent to wow, people wont care about your appearance.

Although do continue to shower.

Showering is cool.

Sound advice

And yet it tends to get overlooked by a lot of people in life, much to my despair!

No arguments here

Wow, i completely forgot i posted this question up 6 months or so ago.
Thanks for your help, im nearly at the end of my second year studying 3d Games Art, and it has really put my mind at ease that having stretched ears and long hair isn’t going to hinder my progress into the industry.

Side note, Brink looks amazing.
Cheers Folks!

(WhiteAden) #12

wait, did you say STRETCHED EARS!..

just kidding =P pictures though, =) how stretched are they!

(MyDemise) #13

only 19mm, not sure how far im going to go with it though, ive spent tonnes on all sorts of crazy 19mm items that fit into my ear! Got some awesome baby scorpions, encased in glass somewhere…

Pretty tame.

I learned a very valuable lesson once from a very very wealthy man. I was on an informational interviewed for an internship job. I was elected to represent my county in computer science while I was in highschool. At the end of the interview he went to point out the good and the bad. He said I did good, but told me I should dress my environment. A very simple statement, but has alot of truth to it. Wearing a suit for a programming job was unnecessary and meant nothing to him.

I dunno, I can’t speak for SD. But, there are so many more variables an employer looks at than just appearance. Unless of course the job revolves around it.

19mm isn’t too excessive indeed… my girlfriend wants to get hers stretched, but not unless I agree with it… so a part of me is looking for reference material lol… point is, she wants to get into advertising, where PR is rather important… so I’m wondering how large you can go without making them permanent… I’m pretty sure anything over 10mm won’t close off if you quit wearing the rings…

Them things are hideous, my mate has one and I just don’t understand why you would do that to yourself, I know that in certain tribes they did similar things to the women so the white man wouldn’t find them attractive and steal them and well yeah I wouldn’t touch anyone with this crap either.

(light_sh4v0r) #17

eww, looks like it’s gonna fall off any second :s

(shagileo) #18
