strogg opressor.

So what does the shield protect against? Normal bullets only? Rocket Launcher? Grenades? Knife?!

Can you shoot out of the shield?

(Gringo) #42

Is the shield considered an offensive weapon?

(ayatollah) #43

How is a shield offensive not disagreeing with you but don’t understand how its possible. Unless the bullets bounce off and head back towards the shooter?!

(Gringo) #44

Thats an offensive weapon that is!

(Ifurita) #45

You know, when the SWAT team knocks down your front door and comes charging in behind the guy carrying the big shield, I don’t think anyone would quibble about the shield not being part of the offensive kit.

(Earlydawn) #46

Ah, you still have to pull Stroyent out of bodies, right?

And I don’t think the shield is an arm mounted deal, I think it’s a deployable a la the covenant energy shields in Halo.

Accurate info is pretty scare, but I speculate like hell off of gameplay videos, interviews, etc. In the gameplay vid, the same one I keep referring to again, you can clearly see that the “Stroyent Tool” doesn’t have a power bar shown. Odd that it doesn’t have an ammo counter either though.

The whole concept of stroyent is that it’s an organic material needed by the Strogg and that it’s not something they can make. It’s the reason they came to Earth or other planets, and it’s what fuels their war-machine-race. And we do know how seriously SD takes the QuakeStory judging by the last Dev. Diary…

Although you might spawn with a little stroyent, I would be extremely shocked if you didn’t have to actually harvest it out of GDF bodies.

(Earlydawn) #48

Yeah, I remember the Stroyent concept from Quake 4… So if you don’t have a Technician on your team, you can’t load up again? That’s an interesting tactical compromise.

Can a tech drain the body then spike it for respawn?

This is how I see the balance problem between GDF Medic and Strogg Technician.

Medic has health packs - they replenish only health, Technician has stroyent cells - they replenish both health and ammo. So far Technician has the advantage. To even them out Medic is given the revive ability while Technician can only create spawn points and cannnot revive - atleast according to the latest info. I assume that up to this point balance between the two classes is more or less set. However Medic also has the ability to call in air supply drop (a crate filled with health packs). Not only that but in order to be able to use his abilities at all the Technician has to extract stroyent from fallen GDF troops, which takes up a lot of his time.

If all of this is correct (and thats a big if) then Medic has a double advantage over Technician. Even if he couldn’t call in supplys Technician still has to run around collecting stroyent which distracts him from the battle (when you look at it this way it seems almost certain that SD will remove the ability to call in supply drops). I really can’t say what will be changed in order to even them out. I can only assume that, as I said, supply drops will be removed and that Technician cannot be given the Tactical shield becouse it is needed to balance Opressor with GDF Field op. Beyond that I have no idea. Maybe one of the devs would like to enlighten us?

Btw I looked at the gameplay footage Dr_Tenma mentioned (atleast I think its the same footage since I found it at another site) where you have a Strogg Technician that can revive other Strogg players. But that movie is pretty old and I think they have changed a lot of stuff since then - if you look at the movie carefuly you will see that Technician still has the Tactical shield which has also been changed.

Perhaps the more important role for the med is to resupply and get the means necessary for supplying, thus working directly for team purposes unlike the legions of rambo meds in ET. Only a good thing in my opinion. Also the ability for techs to create spawn points, one would assume, would have the effect of keepin them toward the front line.

Also, due to the team based nature of QW the strogg meds will get a taste of doin the hard work that engies have done in ET for donkeys.

(Flesh) #51

That may be true, but the problem is that GDF Medic will be doing a better job at it than the Technician.

(Gringo) #52

Very true but perhaps the ability to create a spawn point may add a vital part to the technican, i guess we have to wait and see how it pans out!

(ayatollah) #53

As far as I remember, a Strogg Technician can either take Stroyent from victims or create a spawn point.

(AnarchyAngel) #54

I think if you add back in the fact that the Technicans can also revives that pans out. I also personally belive that they will also have a sheild but it will be smaller and only allow enough cover for him to drop it down and pump stroydent or create a spawn host, it makes complete sense to me especially if you take into a count what its like for covert ops in wolf Et trying to snatch a uniform from a corpse. Anyways time will tell, or maybe a dev might shed some light?
