Some Feedback to ETQW Designers from Quake Wars Videos

(Isabel Lucas) #1

Hi,

Just a little development feedback from the Quake Con Quake Wars Videos:

  1. I noticed that ETQW has “Tools Tips” - that tell you how to operate vehicles / use machinary. These have proved to be the bain of everyone’s life in the Battlefield Series. The designers of BF2 made these a run once option to try to stop them being a problem. The problem with this is that everytime you reinstalled the game for any reason, they were back and even though you’d been playing for ages, you have to get nagged by them for the next 3 days whilst you reused everything post reinstall. Can you please make sure there is an option to turn these off in the game browser’s options in ETQW to stop this becoming a problem as very few people ever want to hear these more than once and many players often would prefer to have them turned off completely even the 1st time the game is run.

  2. Just looking at the videos I also noticed, so far as it possible to tell from a low quality video, that some of the larger weapons sounded a bit weedy - specifically some of the tanks / artillary pieces and vehicle mounted weapons which had no real boom or power to them. Is there any chance you could re-examine some of the sounds and beef these up before release to make a more immersive experience?

  3. The commanders voice (the one that points you to the objectives) is weedy and lacking in command authority. Infact there’s almost a joke like tone to it. If this game is to be taken seriously, it needs changing to a deeper more authorative command like voice with a purposeful and serious tone.

  4. The command rose with all the sub menus seems slow and difficult to use. Its not good to be stood around in battle for ages searching for a command or request option. Perhaps rather than having a command rose with lots of sub menus, it would be better to have seperate command roses organised by category and bound to different keys thus making selection faster and easier once you’d learned which category was bound to each key.

Many thanks and hope these suggestions help,

Al.

I believe UI and Sound are not nearly complete as they are trying to get the basic game mechanics, vehicles, and weapons all balanced. Sound will most likely be re-thought/re-done near the end of development.

It would be better off in the general options. But your idea certainly is a “must-have”.

I’m answering with a quote:

I could paste the previous quote again, but I didn’t do it. Actually, I don’t know if the tone is such an issue.
W:ET is not about seriousness too, listen to the German “Attaaaaack!” sound. Whilst you would expect some authorative tone there, it’s just hilarious.

This seems a much better way of dealing with them.

However, I would like to state once again that I would prefer the RtCW style keyboard-controlled menus. No clutter with the mouse, just ‘v56’.
The only thing I found nifty about them in BF2 was that you could aim at an enemy vehicle, open the rose, click in the center and see a nice “vehicle spotted” message without extra clutter.

It’s not a “bug” it’s a feature.

AFAIK you can use your mouse or keyboard, like in RtCW. so, whichever suits you best.
But I’m not 100% sure…

Level Design - Are all of the levels have a flat battlefield, ie: in the videos it seemed that the three objectives are all on the same plane. There’s no heigth difference like once the bridge is built you have to go up a mountain the get the next objective.

(Wils) #7

You can, and we have a vertical menu option if you want old style voicechat.

We’re not worthy, we’re not worthy!

Yes. ET:QW is actually a 2d isometric game and they haven’t figured how to add Z to those movement equations. It’s too complicated!

(kamikazee) #11

The map’s name is “valley”. 'nuff said?

(Rhoades) #12

no offense, but that’s kinda a dumb question. Why wouldnt you be able to go up a mountain to the next objective?

(madness) #13

this might answer it:

When you jump in it will say, “Have you heard this before? Nope? [Ok, here’s the briefing.]”

Nice article but just one problem, getting asked “Have you heard this before?” and having to reply “yes” everytime you get into a vehicle is going to get almost as annoying as listening to the briefing.

SD need to have a game option to turn off all tool tips at the brower settings page so that for anyone who’s either heard them before or doesn’t want to hear them at all, there’s an option to turn them off once and for all.

if you actually had played W:ET you’d prolly notice that it has that option and since SD are really smart people (yes it’s true!), i can’t see why wouldn’t they make an option to turn off help tips.

unless… an evil tapir would oblige them to leave it ON just to make us bleed from our ears when he heard the solemn words “welcome to the titan tank…” for the million’th time.

har!

people, you’re not thinking fourth dimentionally. A voice assistant from the future must not be shut off. After the initial tool tips, it could tell funny jokes you never heard of, it could play Fur Elise or Splash Wave or just say “who do you want to run over today?”.

A scriptable voice assistant can be used in lots of ways: from warning you about a near-failure condition / incoming missiles to telling you “new record” when you beat the time on the racing mod circuit.

Personally, If I ran an ET:QW server, I would script the assistant and have it say “Is that you, Michael?” the first time a driver gets in.

OR

“I’m sorry Dave, I’m afraid I can’t do that”
“I’m afraid. I’m afraid, Dave. Dave, my mind is going. I can feel it. I can feel it. My mind is going. There is no question about it. I can feel it. I can feel it. I can feel it. I’m a… fraid.”

ROFL…if they implement KIT or other movie like computer voices i am very sure i will never hit a single person because i realy cant shoot laughing

(Hakuryu) #19

What we really need is a text to voice converter (for names), so while you are fixing your vehicle as an engineer and some noob tries to jump in and drive away it should say…

“This is Hakuryu’s vehicle noob! Don’t you see him repairing it?”

Then the ejector seat kicks in and sends them high into the air without a parachute.

Weedy sounds - explosions etc - are a good thing. They don’t make your eyes hurt after hours of play ! It’s the same as with game music, if it’s too noisy (and looped) it quickly becomes pain in the ass.
