So, let's talk aiming habits

(VincentRJaeger) #61

As far as I know this is what I have currently:

  1. I have it set to 4 right now.

  2. It’s set on 600 DPI for now but it’s a Logitech MX518 so I believe I can change it whenever I want. From 400 to 1200 DPI.

  3. I move my wrist mostly, but I do sometimes switch to using my arm.

  4. Neither. My chair has no armrests and my desk is not big enough for me to rest my elbow on.

  5. I use a medium mousepad: roughly the size of an A4 piece of paper. Dono if that qualifies as big or small so I just call it medium : P

I don’t have inverted and I sometimes mix between holding the mouse in palm or like a claw. Don’t know why I do that to be honest.

Though really, I have little idea what I am doing with this; if there’s something that can be changed to help my aim, let me know.
1. What sens do you use in game?
2. What DPI do you use? How about Polling Rate and the mouse you use?
3. Do you move your whole arm or just your wrist?
4. Do you rest your elbow on your chair or on the desk?
5. Do you use a large mousepad or a small one? Or none at all?
1.) I’ve had success with the 6.0 setting, I’m experimenting between 4.0 and 7.0 in-game. Trying to find a balance between being able to turn 180 on short notice and landing headshots.
2.) My mouse is a Logitech G500, on the fly DPI settings of 400, 800, and my preferred 2000.
3.) I pivot my arm on my elbow for gross movement, resting my wrist for precision aim.
4.) I rest it on my knee. Yes you read right, my knee. I sit at my computer cross-legged. I’ve done this since early childhood.
5.) None at all. I’ve got a lot of desk and I don’t mind elbow pivoting for large movements.

You ragged on accel but use DPI switching. Yeah ok.

(Bottlecaps) #64

Which mice would you professionals recommend? Steelseries Rival, G502, or Deathadder Chroma?
I know that G502 has the best sensor out of these 3 but when I went to go try it out at my local electronics store, my thumb kept hitting the side buttons. I might actually have to buy it and try it out in-game. I also plan on getting the QCK+ mousepad.

Personally I think the G502 is the best modern mouse. If it didn’t exist I’d use an IME 3.0.

(watsyurdeal) #66

I know there’s plenty of shit talk about the Deathadder, but I’ve pretty much only upgraded to the chroma for the lighting. I had the 2013 for a long time, and the Deathadder 3.5 G I gave to a friend. All 3 work fine, never had any mouse accel, never had any weird issues or breakage.

(Bottlecaps) #67

@Ghosthree3 Yeah, but it also depends on a persons hand and grip style. Again, I think I would need to try the mouse in-game before I make jumping conclusions. No question that the g502 has the best sensor, but how the mouse feels in the hand is a big factor as well

(Ghosthree3) #68

Yeah that’s very true. For me the shape off the G502 is great, but my hands are quite large. I know some people have posted they hate the shape in other forums. Some also say it’s a bit heavy, I don’t feel that problem though.

(Jurmabones) #69

The ability to keep low sens for tracking and still be able to twitch shot.
It still doesn’t make sense to me. With accel, how far your mouse moves is based on how fast you move the mouse, not just how far you move it. To have precise aim, whether tracking or twitch shooting, having a consistent response from your mouse is absolutely key.

(Ghosthree3) #70

That’s why muscle memory is so important. When people say that accel goes against muscle memory they couldn’t be more wrong, how fast you move is just as relevant as how far. So when properly developed using accel is extremely consistent.

(Samniss_Arandeen) #71

You ragged on accel but use DPI switching. Yeah ok.
Except I never switch it. I always leave it on the highest setting. Any lower and I have weird inconsistencies in my aim. Even if I were to switch DPI, it’s infinitely better than to fuck over the whole concept of mouse aim with the abomination known as mouse acceleration.

(Samniss_Arandeen) #72

Weird…it double posted for some reason.

  1. 3.965 in game and I think I take about 23.5 inches to do a 360.
  2. 700 DPI, 1000 Hz, and I use a g303 with some of the internals removed to cut down on weight. I use a mix between palm and claw grip but it’s mostly claw grip.
  3. No low sens player just uses their arm. We all use our arm for large movements and wrist for finer adjustments. Usually the two motions are done at the same time, as in you move your wrist and arm together when making a large turn to put your crosshair in a precise spot.
  4. I don’t rest my elbow on anything but I have pretty much my entire forearm (up to around 1.5 in below my elbow) on my desk. Most low sens players keep their elbow on their desk or elbow rest, though.
  5. I used to use very large cloth pads, then large hard pads but then I used some mouse tracking software and found out my desk tracks just as well as any of my pads so I switched to that. It’s way smoother and way larger than any mousepad

You shouldn’t just copy people’s settings and expect to get better, though. Just keep in mind that most pro fps players take between 12-28 inches to do a 360 (you can go to mouse-sensitivity.com to see what your distance to 360 is if you were wondering) but other than that it’s mostly preference. Some pros have higher or lower sensitivities than that but they’re in the minority. Here’s a pretty good guide for finding your ideal sens

  1. In-Game ~ 5
  2. 400DPI w/ PR of 500Hz (It’s a lil’ iBUYPOWER mouse.)
  3. My mouse-pad has like a little soft rest for my wrist that’s elevated so really I have no choice (wrist.). (Also I have a desk with 2 higher spots and 1 lower shelf. Keyboard on the lower shelf and my mouse/mouse-pad on the higher piece, so idk but it may affect my movement considering my mouse is elevated much more than my keyboard.)
  4. Elbow is always in the air.
  5. Pretty small.
I also run 16:9 aspect ratio most of the time sometimes using 4:3 (1280x960) to test it out. (I say this as certain aspect ratios give certain FOV’s and that also changes how the mouse movement works.)

Reminds me a lot of Raziels guide for aiming in RtCW, classic

You are aware that 1280x720 is native to 16:9 ratio just like 1920x1080 right. No stretching would occur.
True maybe its the performance gain that helps. Tho to be honest monitors are so bad nowadays in scaling resolutions up it looks horrible IMO. In this regards CRTs where far superior, variable resolutions and refreshrates.

Did something like the CSGO vid to reach my 5 sens, a day or so before the tread started. Is a bit time consuming but works great. A few pointers for doing it in DB (for those that wanna try).

Enable static decals in the videosettings, if you have it off currently, DB cuts bulletholes rather fast. But static decals will give you nice persistent ones on the trainingsmap (windows).

Set the sensitivity in the console (setsensitivity I think) easier than hopping into options all the time, additional “cursor up” brings back the last command.

Turns are very important in DB when you test the lower settings do 90 and 180 turns inbetween and see if you can make them still comfortable / with one swipe. its fairly easy to go so low that you have to lift the mouse.

(Ghosthree3) #77

CRTs were superior in all ways but convenience and price tbh. I looked into buying a 1080p one a couple of years back but it cost $2,000 :frowning:

It was definitely the performance gain if you weren’t already getting a steady framerate at all times since the format didn’t change.

There are quite a few people who play at an in-game native resolution of 4:3 then use their video drivers to stretch the image out to a 16:9 720p view which can make some things feel as if they are easier to hit. But it’s a total preference thing. There is a lot more to talk about in regards to that but it would be better in a new thread. Everything from pros and cons of having more or less of a view to latency added/subtracted depending on what you’re using (both in resolution and hardware).

Out of curiosity…how would I do this @Amerika???

Stretching a 4:3 on my 16:9 monitor?

You can do it in the Nvidia and AMD control panels. I can’t give you the exact directions right now as I am at work but I’d wager you can Google it and find it pretty easy. One of the guys in CSGO I know who waffles between different resolutions and formats and put up a tutorial on how to do it is Hiko. So that might help when searching.
