So, let's talk aiming habits

(watsyurdeal) #81

Same here, stuck at work but at least it’s Friday

I’ll give it a go when I get home, the game feels great now as far as hit reg goes, but I keep having to aim slightly to the left, or to the right to land a headshot, which is weird.

I wonder if it’s due to aspect ratio or just lag compensation.

(Amerika) #82

Well, I’d wager it’s due to a lot of things. First and foremost they reduced both aimpunch (where your xhair kicks up) and viewkick (where the kick is artificial and your bullets stay where you were aimed) and they also reduce the amount of time to reset things back to neutral. That’s why every gun feels godlike and people can hit shots better. The other factor is most likely due to the server changes where they reduced the load by ~20% and probably fixed a lot of the spiking which would cause some server-side lag events. This would also have an affect on lag compensation lag calculation accuracy and speed.

That’s my best guess but it’s an educated one.

Urgs stretching 4:3 to 16:9 I would never do that, I would get physical angry everytime I encounter a circle. And besides it would make Rhino even wider than he is  .

CRTs where sweet for sure, tho carrying my two 21" CRTs into the 4th floor was enough to convince me to never do that again. The energy bill wasn’t that great either, I think I saved 10% just by switching to a LCD.

For years I carried a 19" Trinitron around to tons of LAN events across the country. The walk/wait to get into your room then the walk/wait (and giant registration lines) where you have to constantly pick up and move the damn thing + your tower (no mini pc’s) was nuts. IIRC, it was 84lbs which begins to get pretty heavy quickly haha.

(watsyurdeal) #85

At least you worked out those biceps though XD

(Ghosthree3) #86

I know someone who plays in 800x600 with minimum fov and their aim is god like. I don’t know if they stretch it or not.

Couldn’t ever do it myself though, regardless of how much it might help my aim. Ew…

(capriRocket) #87

i cant understand why anyone would want to play this game on anything other than minimum fov. i mean its more of a game like cs and not a quake where you need to keep track of enemies in close range with a rocket launcher.

i dont really require accel for this game, for the same reason.

(Ghosthree3) #88

Minimum fov feels really weird to me. I previously had it maxed at 100 which looked great but caved and lowered it to 85 since bigger heads trumps that extra bit of peripheral vision and it doesn’t look awful. Still took me quite some time to get used to though, feels so close.

(Vampwood) #89

I’m one of those weird players who just decided to play at 720p with minimum fov, just feel it makes targets bigger and “easier” to track for me, also fps gains.

(RadicalMac) #90

lol you should record some gameplay like this, I’d like to see how well you do with it :stuck_out_tongue:

I have plenty of videos of me playing on youtube. I do pretty well

(Gi.Am) #92

That resolution only makes the targets blockier tho  (admited I’m tempted something in the last patch reduced performance for me).
But yeah running 73 FOV equates to the default HL1 FOV. Was on minimum FOV before, but needed a bit more, for those pesky, melee Auras. I think Chickenwaffles said somewhere (maybe another tread or somewhere else) he was using minimum FOV aswell. But its another “whatever floats your boat” setting.

(ludicrousBlast) #93

I have grown used to a thing called low frame rate preventing me from aiming well with slow fire rate weapons.

(tulipRowboat) #94

When I started I had my sense at about 11~12, but recently lowered it to 7. After getting used to it, I like it better this way.

(Amerika) #95

I actually think this game does scaling correctly with resolutions so you playing at 720p might not look any different than 1080p other than the obviously quality increase. Also the HUD will be bigger since it doesn’t scale with resolution change and is defaulted to 720p IIRC. I’d need to test this though…does anybody else have information on this?

tbh if you run on a 1920x1080 monitor and have GPU scaling on, then having 1280x720 stretched increases size in EVERYTHING. The best to use is 4:3 1280x960 stretched.

(Amerika) #97

Well, I’m not talking about that. I’m talking about the game appearing “bigger” at 720p than in 1080p. I believe everything appears the same size at both of those 16:9 resolutions in UE3…you just lose visual fidelity. Where in other engines (like the Q3 engine) if you lower the resolution it will change the scale of what you’re viewing and make things appear bigger.

It could easily be tested. Take a screenshot of your game with a person in it at 1080p. Then change it to 720p and take another screenshot. Probably doesn’t need another player in it but I think it might be easier to check scale if there was.

Well technically things are “bigger” visually, as everything is stretched to a larger size causing things to be wider/taller

[quote=“Watsyurdeal;16483”]So, talk about how you aim a bit.

  1. What sens do you use in game?
    9.4

  2. What DPI do you use? How about Polling Rate and the mouse you use?
Razor Deathadder. I used a Logitech MX518 for the longest time, but it died and they don’t make them anymore. 3500dpi, 500polling (default)

  3. Do you move your whole arm or just your wrist?
    Wrist only

  4. Do you rest your elbow on your chair or on the desk?
I have a wrist rest, my elbow is not resting on anything.

  5. Do you use a large mousepad or a small one? Or none at all?
Relatively large. Hard surface. I played without for a while, but using a mousepad makes a world of difference.
