Sniper suggestions for ETQW

(RX|marrafakka) #21

Realism sucks, that’s why there are aliens in ETQW.

(Wils) #22

Realism does not suck, realism at the expense of gameplay sucks. There are aliens in ETQW because they’re integral to the plot, not to make the game less realistic.

I just love this man, and everything he writes, since his

“when thinking about QW just think about Quake setting with ET gameplay”…

(EB) #24

MMmmMMmMm…that is some good PR.
:moo:

On Loffy’s idea: 1/5 of ammo-stock could be sniper ammo that explodes on contact … or maybe electrical shock ammo, where it paralizes the target for X seconds when skin contact is made.

(carnage) #25

a tracer round that could atach the drivables or players then then show up their position on command maps making it hard for them to hide

or show up some kind of mark on sreen so you could still watch them as they duck behind buildings making it easier to get the 2nd shot in but making it no less skilled to get another shot because the damage model is still the same

for night time maps maby even flare style shots or something that make the enemy glow so there lit up like a christmass tree making them easy spoting for the rest of the team

^^well if you have a dynamic lighting engine you might as well make the most of it u no

We just replaced the Sniper Rifle and RailGun weapons with the Custard Pie item. Terrible gameplay, but UTTERLY realistic.

More fizzy drinks!

(Ciabs) #27

yay @ pie+drinks!

barfs ftw!!

(Jaquboss) #28

Sniper rifles were great in ET, just it is fun to see newbies on large map, great to take sniper rifle and took two snipers aiming at you or just get them with knife from behind
I am just wondering if there will be prone in QW

(Ciabs) #29

sniper rifles on ET = most useless weapon in comparison with other Covops skills,

AND

most frustrating thing to have 3 ppl sitting on the hill sniping instead of disguising and letting engy to obj…

Bi-la kaifa.

I kind of disagree with that Wils.

Realism does suck. At least from my point of view. I’ve played every first person shooter since well Castle Wolfenstein, including most on consoles, and never have I found a realistic game that is fun to me. At least when we are talking about 1 shot kills, wind and dropoff, and the like. I want to play a game, not a simulation it what it boils down to.

But then again, it might be they sacrificed some gameplay for their realism and that is why those games sucked.

a better idea would be to remove the sniper rifle completely

That would be stupid, you cant have a game with huge maps like this one and open areas without a sniper rifle or kit. I also think that there should be 1 shot head shot kills. I just think thats a lot cooler then 2 to 3 shots to get a kill with a sniper it adds more suspense if your running around in the open or sprinting from cover to cover and you know snipers are in the area. But headshots should be difficult to get and should take skill to do. Plus its pretty satisfying to get a 1 shot kill if you are a sniper.

(Nail) #33

as seen in ET, snipers are pretty much useless in team based objective games

(Gringo) #34

I can guarantee that it wouldnt be cool to be on the receiving end of a one shot kill!

(SCDS_reyalP) #35

It seems you missed the second part of what he said. “Realism at the expense of gameplay sucks.” From your POV, that seems to include one shot kill snipers. Not everyone agrees on that, but it’s a valid opinion.

Myself, I think the RTCW sniper was just about right. I find the ET sniper is too weak. Just about the only time ET snipers give me trouble when there are a LOT of other people supporting them. e.g. if the axis are set up around the bridge in fueldump, a couple of axis snipers can be extremly annoying, because you can’t pick them out and kill them while fighting the guys at the bridge. The snipers take most of your health, and then it only takes a long distance SMG shot or two to get you. You might say “oh, see those snipers are supporting their team, just like they are supposed to!”, but in reality, if they went SMG medic and came down to the front, they would just as effective, if not more so. They are only really effective because their team is already kicking ass. There are a few situations where they are useful, especially in the hands of a skilled player, but for the most part an extra rambo med would be far more to the point.

Well, I would think that the maps will be much more open and much bigger in Quake Wars. Snipers can help a team or squad actually, or at least they do in BF2, they can pick off other snipers and if your squad is going for a flag, a sniper can clear out most of the enemy running around the flag.

With overpowered snipers (like in Q3F) it becomes an icredibly fun game of attack, die in the middle of map, respawn
attack, die in the middle, respawn
attack, die in the middle, respawn
attack, die in the middle, respawn

It would only be fun for snipers and masochists. Snipers are good enough in W:ET. If you can’t play well with a sniper, try to learn or switch class. Part of being a good sniper is
a) recognizing good sniping spots
b) adapting to situation.
c) recognizing when there are enough competent snipers AND SWITCHING TO MORE NEEDED CLASS.
More on b): there are occasions where it is wise to place yourself in at-first-glance stupid spot. It all depends on what your teammates are doing. If they’re particularly good at defending one route (good MG soldier etc), you can afford to snipe in places you wouldn’t otherwise consider. In short, some places are very good IF you have someone cover your back, but bad otherwise. An example is Gold Rush. Once the bank is open, if your teammates can secure the bridge, you have a good sniping spot, and you can force them to hide into the bank or arches. Just don’t sit in the front line, move back as far as you can (rear edge of the bridge) and use partial cover of bridge railing.
In general, sniper rifle is much better with support of teammates. No one is going to look for a sniper if they’re under fire of assault rifles. You can remain undiscovered much longer. They will think they’re dying from machineguns, while in fact most soldiers can be weakened with 1 or 2 sniper shots first. Snipers suffer from the same problem as panzer and mortar: they can’t capture and secure areas. You have to live with it.
I don’t go for headshots with sniper rifle unless I have a guaranteed hit (someone standing still). I mostly go for body shots, I’m much more effective this way.

On pubs (it’s not like I play anywhere else anymore) certain areas quickly become saturated with snipers. But there are maps I couldn’t imagine playing without decent sniper. Battery as allies - you really need 1 or 2 good snipers to cover bunker and the cliff with assault ramp. Axis have it too easy if there’s no sniper. There are very good sniping spots on battery.

If left alone, a sniper on Fuel Dump (map) is very annoying. But I wouldn’t even consider having more than 2 in team. Also they’re mostly good before tank blows the gate. Once it is blown, you’d do better to take sten and support your engineers, blow depot defences, remove mines, and throw smoke to help attackers.
Again, Axis have it too convenient if there’s no allied sniper. They don’t have to hide behind walls.

Sniper on Oasis can be useful, but in most cases you can’t do anything a MG soldier wouldn’t do better. I’d say it its use among allies, but that would be forgetting panzerfaust and rifle grenades.

as seen in ET, snipers are pretty much useless in team based objective games

quote that!

I think there should be a sniper weapon, but it shouldn’t be 1hit-kill; remember, we’re still talking about ET-gamestyle, and with medics that probably won’t have a powerbar to supply health packs but will probably need to restock at health cabinets we’re going to have a lot more half-injuried enemies, thus making it more probable to have a sniper hit kill the target, but still not so powerful as to kill a full-health player in one single hit…

(about the meds without powerbar: I only think of it because of the “what you see is what you get” style they’re implementing in QW, so it seems difficult that a soldier actually creates health/ammo packs out of nowhere… )

and btw, as quoted: I really hope that while still being there, most Rangers will rely on stealth skills and on PDA-hacking and Remote cams-placing instead of useless sniping…

(Gringo) #39

Imagine if et had a one shot sniper kill. How many snipers would be on their bellies at the start of temple or fuel dump? Over powering a sniper’s weapon would stop them from deploying import smoke and satchel charges.

Snipers are good but just like every other class their power has to be limited. One shot kills would surely lead to what BOrsuk said. I for one would find it very annoying constantly bein sniped. If the maps are big it would take u donkeys to even find out where ur bein sniped from.

A certain amount of realism is of course needed but it has to be limited to a certain extent. If it were too real we’d end up bein like real soldiers, hunkering in some ditch, browning our pants and afraid to peek round the corner for fear of having our face blown off.

(Nail) #40

notice I said snipers were useless, not the whole covops class, I get tired of seeing 3 snipers on Fuel Dump hill sniping at the axis while poor engi has to dynamite the defences instead of covop blowing with satchel and giving cover smoke, while reffing on our server I will sometimes give engis permission to tk them if they won’t heed calls for help at the gates

(well, I don’t really, but I sure feel like it)
