Skill trees
My concerns are that it creates a disincentive for people to switch classes as the mission progresses and grants more powerful abilities to people who’ve been playing the game a long time and have a character or so for each class.

Will have to see how this stuff is balanced.
I think winning the battle is enough incentive for them to switch to classes that don’t necessarily have points spent on. It gives teams that hold the greater good over individual gain an edge.

(Mad Hatter) #62

Aw, you stole what I was gonna say. But yes, I agree; people hate losing much more than they hate having to change classes. I don’t foresee (m)any problems with this system. Sure there will be the occasional stubborn fool who refuses to play as anything other than coughOperativecough, but most people will do the right thing, especially if it must be done to win.

(THEJORRRG) #63

Is it possible t max out your character?

(H0RSE) #64

If you mean can you unlock every skill with one guy, no you cannot. Well, not at the same time at least. Technically, you could keep re-specing him until you have tried every ability.

(BioSnark) #65
i can’t see the relevance of that. using the class your good with is because you want to help your team, if not directly, then indirectly, if your maxed towards engineer and then play as soldier all the time i can hardly see you helping much.

whereas a leaderboard has nothing to do with the ingame experience, other than that it would make the objectives irrelevant in some matches because everyone is going for the top 10…
In other words, they have everything to do with in-game experience.

Now lets go back to character selection to compare,

To clarify, you can’t change characters mid-match. Characters can be specialized to in one class if players so choose. My position is that the difference in effectiveness between ‘specialized’ and ‘default’ will determine if or to what extent players are willing to play non-specialized classes.

In other words, if the attacking team has four people who have max level instagib turrets and rave disco lasermines then they won’t switch. If, on the other hand, they are playing a different version of Brink and have max level +5% damage turrets / mines, they won’t care about switching classes. Where Brink falls between those two extremes will influence how players feel about switching classes.

My ideal would be that this effect on player behavior be negligible.

Humans are animals. Great ape (human and otherwise) social behavior involves hierarchy, cooperation, deception, social jockeying, courtship, even murder and taught tool usage. That is their “nature.” That is how the imperative of continued gene reproduction is manifested.

In other cases, for the sake of extremes, independent scavengers or hive insects, this same imperative will manifest in very different manners or “natures.”

I’m not gonna get into a big philosophical discussion here, but I would just like to state that you are gravely mistaken and outright wrong.

But if a player had all those cool gadgets, would changing classes really benefit the team that much? As mentioned earlier, he probably has all that stuff because he is good at playing that class - so he’s good at the class AND has all that cool stuff.

(Nikto) #67

yes, but only in a negative way meaning they shouldn’t be in at all.

(Offensive Person) #68

I think this is because if a bunch of refugees really came together after some disaster, not every person is going to be good at everything.

Why can’t I get my hair right?

(BioSnark) #69

They wouldn’t have respawns, either.

No. Not at all. Some players like leaderboards (they are fun, challenging goals). Some players like extremely delineated, semi-static character classes (they are extremely varied and unique). These aren’t all negatives or all positives.

As I was pointing out in the example, depends on character make up. If it’s varied, fine. If not, some players will need to (be willing to) switch classes and my hope is that they wont be penalized for it.

I would just like to state that you are gravely mistaken and outright wrong.
a thoughtful, thorough and effective counterargument. thx.

Look at the stupid ape claim to be free of millions of years of selection pressures pushing for certain behaviours!

You ain’t bigger than your genes son!

(tokamak) #71

Is the softcore really necessary?

Why shouldn’t they be penalised for it? They enjoy the benefits of such a highly specialised configuration on the moments where it fits.

That’s not softcore anything. In regards to anime that scene is completely normal.

ahem And do you really want to punish players for switching classes in an effort to help their team? That goes completely against the design philosophy they have been trying to achieve, where you are rewarded for being helpful to your team and doing things that make the game more fun for everyone.

Genes determine hereditary traits and characteristics that vary between humans. Human nature is the notion that all humans share some sort of hard-coded, pre-determined characteristics in their DNA. As I mentioned earlier, wanting to preserve the survival of a species is not “human nature,” it is instinct, and it prevalent in all living things. There is nothing that makes it strictly a human action. Even our emotions are not universally sound - something that is sad or funny, may trigger a response in one person and not another.

This is one of my favorite online posts, describing Human nature vs Human Behavior:

“Behaviour characteristics are determined by socially acceptable actions performed around a person. It is socially acceptable to be greedy, so some people are greedy. It is socially acceptable to think that making money is far more important than preventing the end of all life on this planet: which is what this society is doing. Ironically, it is NOT socially acceptable to try and find answers to questions when one learns that, in general, the information that we are repeatedly given, isn’t reliable. Nor is it socially acceptable to question economics or religion or the dominant two-party political system. Human nature, is anything that the respective state and culture wants it to be; alternatives to socially permitted conduct is anti-social behaviour. But anti-social behaviour in one country is human nature in another! As the state and cultures vary greatly around the globe, then so does human nature: so there can’t possibly be any definition of human nature. Human nature simply cannot be. There is no such thing as human nature. As usual, the information that we are being fed is unreliable.”

Survival is a key instinct, all other behavior is learned. There is no right or wrong, just an opinion of good or evil. Society is to blame for 99% of how humans react and behave, including criminals, religion, and human behavior in general.

I want highly specialised builds to have such consequences, otherwise there would be no more advantage to being an all-rounder. All rounders will have a much easier time switching classes, I don’t see why specialists should have the same privilege, after all, they enjoy the advantage in a different field.

(Mad Hatter) #75

Ah, I see then. Well, I think that if you are a specialist then changing to a class that you aren’t as well-equipped for is enough of a penalty. You’re losing the use of all of those class-specific skills you had on, after all.

On that note, if there are 50 skills, does this mean that there are 10 skills in each category? Soldier, Engineer, Medic, Operative, and General. If the max level is twenty, you could get all of the skills for two of the classes, or one class and general skills. If the skills are split evenly between the five groups, that is.

(tokamak) #76

Aye, so the penalty isn’t even that severe. If everyone has two maxed out classes then nobody should have to play an under specialised class.

(Senethro) #77

Ok you post a bunch of stuff that is wrong and then have this passive aggressive little sting in the tail indicating you’re not going to respond. I’m just gonna say you and the git you quoted should get you some evo psych!

(Spaiker) #78

Wait, I’m confused here, You can level a character to one full ability (or more) but that is not a class. So lets say you went medic all the way, and you switch ingame to engi, you will have the same level as a beginner?

(.Chris.) #79

And I thought this was the Brink section not the Shrink section.

(Humate) #80

Time to bring out my favourite psych quotes imo…
