Skill trees

(Offensive Person) #1

I was watching a video brieftly showing some the skill sets per class. Apparently, you can get higher and higher levels of a class-specific talent. (So, for example, there’s a medic life buff level one, level two, level three, etc. etc.) Anyone know if you take a level one, and then you decide to go for level two, if you get reimbursed what you spent on level one?

I’m only asking because, I figure if I wanted to make a medic, it’d probably be smarter to rack up alot of credits and then go right for the highest level medic buff instead of wasting credits on the lower levels.

I’m pretty sure there are no pre-requisites, so if you wanted rank 2 or 3, you can just buy them when they are available, without buying any lower levels first. As for reimbursement, you can sell skills back if you want - you are never stuck with skills you don’t want.

buying the lower level skill may help you accumulate XP so you get the higher level skill faster.

(LyndonL) #4

It seems the XP racks up very quickly from what I’ve read anyway, so it won’t take long to unlock those higher level abilities even if you do get the lower ones.

(brbrbr) #5

as long as Brink is not[yet] “FPS RPG with shooting”, we can shouldn’t care much about that.
i hope.
but its good basis for [preparing for]upcoming “Brink Online” product, maybe.

(Exedore) #6

You do need lower ranks in order to be able to purchase higher ranks. There aren’t many of these, though.

(Nikto) #7

i saw that one coming, otherwise these lower ranks would have no use whatsoever and only the new people would take them by mistake.

(Offensive Person) #8

That’s what she said.

They would still have use, for ex. - say you unlock life buff 1 at like 2 and life buff 2 isn’t available till lvl 10 and lvl 3 is at 15. Are you going to wait 10-15 levels to get the higher ones without having the the low level buff in the meantime?

(tokamak) #10

Do you also need them ´ equipped ´ in the slots in order for them to work? IE a rank 3 ability needs rank 1 and rank 2 as well, effectively taking up 3 slots from the 5 you have?

I think he has the end-game in mind. At least I assume he is as that’s the point where everything should be balanced the most.

Rahdo mentioned awhile back that they way they approach is skills is backwards from the traditional way, so Al the “powerful” skills are available early on,. while the end game stuff focuses more variety.

(Exedore) #12

No, higher ranks of abilities essentially replace the previous ones with the more powerful versions. But they are indeed powerful, so they essentially cost more than one point.

(tokamak) #13

It still doesn’t take away the fact that the ‘progress’ face of the game is temporarily and thus should be treated as such.

(H0RSE) #14

Once you unlock the top tier skill, can you sell back the lower tiers, or do they need to be unlocked/purchased in order for the top tier to be available?

edit: never mind, you said they “replace” the old ones.

(tokamak) #15

oops, auto-ignore exedore mode on again or something

Right and I guess ‘point’ amounts to one slot here. Good

(brbrbr) #16

so, its more like D&D[but w/o ridiculous randomisatoion offload(of actual simualtion)] or Diablo, rather than other “with RPG portions” products ?

I think “point” means credits.

(tokamak) #18

Then… then I’ve lost it.

(Nail) #19

you buy abilities with points, abilities consume a slot, an upgraded ability uses the same slot as the previous ability

(Mustang) #20

Maybe it’s like 5 slots and 100 points

e.g.
You can have 5 skills at 20 points each, 520=100
Or 3 skills at 30 points each and 2 at 5 points, (3
30)+(2*5)=100
