i’m not convinced a “true” et game or a “true” pc game are very likely to be commercial successes
brinks market problems were not that it was insufficiently pc, but htat it was insufficiently console

SD have indeed never actually proven the ET formula has the mass appeal they seem to build up around the game. It’s that reason why I think they need to diversify their gamemode portfolio, get more entry level appeal to fill the budgetary coffers without needing to dumb down their ET gameplay to appeal to that wider audience. Seems the thing these days is to rub vaseline on anything rough and just keep pounding away.
Valve may be moving to multiplatforms but I think they’ve shown they can still healthily support the PC with PC titles. Not sure how well they are doing on the consoles in this regard?
What does this tell me? That developers/publishers need to adapt and stop being stubborn and expecting their audience to reward the same bankruptcy inducing budgets and safe decision making game formulas. Honestly, I’ve put more hours and had more fun in the $5 Binding of Isaac than I sadly did with Brink. That game took a few months to make too. Seems too many developers now are getting lost in the details and missing out on the magic all together.

While the point about a true ET game may be true, I still lump Brink as close enough to ET to be a version of it, albeit watered down it’s still the same formula but weaker. The whole objective gameplay is very ET. The changes in Brink are about the character movement and the interface. It’s not as unique as the marketing want you to believe, it’s just another take on the previous ET games.
The game doesn’t need to be sufficiently console or PC. It has to be good on all platforms. Many shooters have pulled this off properly by tweaking the interface on each platform so that it works well on that platform. The big gripe on PC is that the interface is very much console centric (1 button to do everything etc) and it detracts from the game when you’re used to standdard PC interfaces. It’s not adding something better, it’s gimping the interface without allowing you the option to un-gimp it.
Look at dead island as another example: also very “console-feel” on PC but within hours of release the community had modded the FOV and various other interface issues to make it more like a PC game and everyone is happy. Rage had the same issue except they had to patch in the graphics options PC gamers are used to fiddling with and it’s still gimped for console performance over PC play. Brink doesn’t allow modding so noone can “fix” it (even though people have been asking for this from day 1).
All I’m saying here is the game needs to be tailored for it’s platform. Yes that requires more work, but without it you get a lot of unhappy players. Compound that with the bad release and you have a massive chunk of the PC community who feel cheated and leave.
Badman said they were “almost there” 18 days ago… judging by what soon meant for the dlc we’ve got at least another 2 weeks to go, possibly another month.
Seeing as it’s the last update Brink will get they can take all the time they want.
Same kind of “soon” as the linux dedicated server. Remember, they said “soon after release” ?
The whole console vs. PC has been beaten to death, crucified, buried and resurrected only to be beaten to death again. I play Brink on PS3. I play Halo on 360. I play Starcraft 2 and Tribes on my PC. I’m a gamer. I go where the game doesn’t suck. It’s pretty easy. Get over the whole “I play on a PC so I’m super-dee-duper and your console ruined my life” schtick.
Move on. Splash Damage has, clearly.

Don’t be mad at PC gamers. They are a sad, dying breed still trying to pretend they’re relevant to the game market.
Nope, it is a console crowd that`s trying to pretend that there is nothing like MMOs and endless iteration of CoD is all there is to gaming.
Wake up, iPad and browser gaming are eating you alive.
Dying breed, maybe. Sad, just because you folks lack the genital power to play PC. Relevant, mostly in rts/mmos these days. More intelligent and skilled than consolers, undisputed. I’d be mad if I were you :).

Not yet, and not for as long as consoles are cheaper than iPads. I admit the game market is overwhelmingly casual, and all of us playing anything more complex than Wii Sports are apt to have less and less to choose from. And yes, MMO’s and RTS’s do have a PC audience. The last WoW expansion and SC2 even made the top 50 in sales last year. Congrats.
My genital power is fine; it’s the financial power I lack. So, get off your bourgeois high horse and take a good look at the teeming masses. It’s console players that get the bills paid for game developers, so it’s console players that get catered to.
Also, you probably are a more skilled gamer than I am. If any particle of my self worth were tied to being good at video games, I might be mad. But it’s not, so I’m not.
Why are you even involving yourself in this discussion inferno? Your not a PC gamer anymore either…You’re just some uni kid that never has time for me anymore. :*(
Your playing Tribes?
If you’re playing ascend in beta please don’t ever refer to playing that as playing Tribes again. <3
That myth again ? Please remind me the price of games on consoles. Please remind me the price of XLA/PSN indie games ?
How many years average for xbox ilfe span ? around 3 years. Upgrade ot PC ? maybe 150-200 euros every 2-3 years, most of the time.
Oh, and with a PC, I don’t need to buy a TV, or pay cable/Satellite TV programs.Of course, I don’t have ot pay microsoft for xbox live service either.
On the medium/long run, the math is on the PC side my friend. But that’s also thanks to consoles, since because of them, many of the major multi platform titles don’t require to upgrade the PC at all since the consoles weren’t upgraded themselves.
It’s console players that get the bills paid for game developers, so it’s console players that get catered to.
.
That’ completely true. But that doesn’t excuse consoel player to accept crap games, crap billing strategies to have them pay always more (while they still thinkit’s cheaper than a PC), and being part of the trend that tends to bring game to a stale, or to haver less and less content, so you can buy more afterward.
But hey, in this system, the big companies have to earn more and more each year. They need to find new source of income meaning new imaginative ways to suck more money from the low people that we are.
Don’t think because you’re on console you’re paying less. You most likely get screwed like everyone else, and very most likey more than the pc “elitists”.
Sorry but I just get pissed about the money argument for console playing. Tell me about lazyness when coming home after workn tell me about not wanting to update drivers, install games, maintain hard drives etc… I’ll believe that way more.
Lets just be clear.
Any gamer who picks just one platform by choice and defends that choice is clearly an idiot.
Any gamer who feels each platform is the same and should be treated the same, is an idiot.
Any gamer who thinks the most popular platform is the best is, yup, an idiot.
We shouldn’t be fighting amongst ourselves, we should be united in demanding quality regardless of the platform we game on.

Mines bigger of course. Yes most 8 year old kids (masses) get an Xbox for Christmas and not many can afford a gaming PC. I’d be willing to think that PC gamers do match up vs consoles fairly well overall, just not in the FPS department (mmo/rtsers). SD used to be PC, but if they are going console I’d like the memo. And I already know console gamers don’t care for the kinda skill PC gamers bring, so why the original post? Oh nvm you didn’t care to think it through…
You know I luv u babe, get in line and I’ll give u some alone time :D.
