Requests For Competition Tweaks

(shirosae) #141
Just a few of thoughts:

 1. Isn’t a big issue with competitive game modes that the actual requirements are fairly dynamic until the community come to a consensus? Perhaps a framework for competitive mini-mods would be a better investment rather than adding rules and features which may be pointless.
Agreed. It’s the same thing I said about the Wolfenstein ironsights thing: the ironsights are exactly 1 promod away from being a serverside toggle. Instead of moaning about those, get the devs to develop the engine issues and leave the fine gameplay balancing until you have a functioning community to iterate the stuff down.

From what’s been said, it does sound like SD is opening up as many options as they possibly can, so many of the options that came in ETQWpro (for example) might be there from the offset.

That doesn’t mean that a promod or pubmod or whatever isn’t required, but it should make them much easier to make, and therefore much earlier to arrive.

Also agreed on the first point; some of the posts here are so embarrassingly packed with childish dogma that they might as well apply for a shot on Britain’s got educationally subnormal people (<3 Brigstocke).

I dunno about the second; I’m not sure how possible it is to make such a system work without voting becoming weaponised. It’s one thing for a group of players to stack a server and initiate votekicks against someone they don’t like, but imagine if those votekicks were some more persistent influence?

It makes groups of people more influential than individuals, and I can see all sorts of terrible clique-iness coming from it.

Again, I think this all comes down to the engine issues. I’m hoping we get more info on the changes SD have made to idtech4.

I think it might offer more of a psychological impact than a physical one: scrubs would no longer be able to scream and scream that tweaking “wasn’t intended”, and might actually try adapting their game to run better themselves.

That said, immediate feedback would be pretty awesome for tweaking. Given that virtual texturing offers dynamic texture loading, I’m wondering how many other aspects of the graphics engine are dynamic beasties.

Certainly at least, I don’t think I can stomache another AIRCRAFT SHOULD BE CONTROLLABLE BY A FLIGHTSTICK WHAT DO YOU MEAN THEY ALREADY ARE I SEE NO MENUS nonsense thread.

I’m glad I made some sense at least.

Re: Voting.
I see what you mean but I think you could work in aspects to limit the gang-bang effect. I guess everything is open to abuse though, it would just be nice to attach repercussions to douchie behaviour, remove the anonymity, give people the power to avoid them, add a little turd icon next to their name.

Some Ideas:

[ul]
[li]Needing to actually have played against the person before you can vote would help limit the online/forum vendettas.
[/li][li]Balancing the votes with neutral and positive votes, presenting the playlist at the end of the map so you can click on the players who took part in the campaign (even if they left the map).
[/li][li]Only allow you to make one persistent vote against a player. Change it by all means but you can’t hound a person over 10 maps and vote them down 10 times.
[/li][li]Lets not forget this can be positive too. Kudos to the team players, lets identify them too.
[/li][/ul]

I’m sure a lot will slip under the radar, you’ll still have your bad day players and Friday night drunks (cough). But if you can shave off the few percent of annoying jerks the game might be a warmer, fun and friendly gaming environment to play in.
wear a flak jacket before you leave your house, your attitude leaves a lot to be desired

what’s this 1.6 you refer to, not a game I play and cry for doody isn’t a series anyone I know is interested in, except wannabe “heros” and other children who can’t play grownup games
1.6 is counter strike. Thanks for verifying you video game knowledge to the rest of this community. O and by the way… Call of duty is one of the TOP selling FPS on its most recent releases. Just because you dont play it and you play games where the community levels are small, doesnt mean there arent other games out there. I find it funny most people who try to argue, play some of the very “least” populated games made. Yet you act like you have something intelligent to say? odd… In my opinion before you speak you should get alot more versatile in more games and get alot more experience. You have already proved from this last post you are comparable to a dog chasing his own tail in the living room.

Im sure you will have something unintelligent to say, so I’ll be waiting. Thanks

(acidrain) #144

Seriously? 8 pages of insulting each other? Get over it guys.

(Nail) #145

Until people realize popularity does NOT equal quality there will always be a misunderstanding, ie: Brittany Spears, Rap “music”, boy/girl bands (N’Sync, Backstreet Boys, Spice Girls) are very popular. Do they have the quality of Pink Floyd, Moody Blues, Procol Harem ? Nope not even close, but they are popular. It’s unfortunate but sheep are sheep

and the question that needs to be answered “Does it feed the beagles”

btw, I did know that 1.6 = CamperSnipe and for someone a year shy of 60 my knowledge of video games is quite extensive but maybe you don’t realize what sarcasm is, my bad, would it be better if I wrote in “txt msg” instead of English as I see you’re from the US ?

p.s. apologies to SD, but I’m mostly Scot and the drink will take you sometimes

(Wezelkrozum) #146

GET OVER YOU 2! Or continue the ranting over private messages or something.

(GlobalWar) #147

Nail you should be wiser then this

(Nail) #148

true enough, I apologize

Dude, UR AWSOM.

Seriously, we need Basiley from ETQW forum here, in this very thread.

(timestart) #150

Will Brink offer force models/brightskins for competitive play? With all these customisation options I think it will be hard to quickly identify enemies/friends and different classes.

(acidrain) #151

Yeah I couldn’t tell the difference between the teams. I really hope the red arrows don’t make a comeback.

(SockDog) #152

Well they’ve said no red arrows and that they also want to encourage clans etc to adopt a uniform. I think that should help on a competitive levels.

Now on pubs etc where everyone is wearing what they think is neat I do also have to admit I’m having trouble looking at the pictures and seeing which side the people are on.

(Shiv) #153

But you haven’t played it yet, it looks similar to rainbow where you quickly learn who is enemy and who is friend by playing it, it just makes sense in game. You aren’t in control of these screenies so you don’t know what the situation was when you got there.
it looks like there is enough to me, tires on shoulders = enemy, leather trench coat = friend

So you’re a security man huh? You’ll die in battle conformist scum!

(jazevec) #155

I don’t mind extra optional competition tweaks and options. What bothers me is when it impacts game design.

Competitive players re well known for aversion to assymetry and randomness. They’re most happy with perfectly symmetric stuff and cry loudly at the slightest sign of something being uneaven.

I like variety. When all matches are predictable and end up the same way, it’s boring. Luck runs away, skill doesn’t. A good player is not afraid of assymetry or randomness, he’ll be winning more on average.

Of course, assymetry is only good when it doesn’t lead to gross imbalances, and randomness can make game unenjoyable if it’s overdone (too much random spread etc). But I think too many games exhibit randomphobia in design. From my perspective it looks like SD watered down ET:QW’s assymetry, they hyped assymetry more than in was actually worth. Case in point - repeatedly stating how different GDF and Strogg medics are, implying that only GDF can revive and Strogg Technician only has spawn hosts.

I’d like to play on maps which have random elements inserted or removed, for example. Of course it would be unfair once in a while, but replayability would increase.

oh gawwd nooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo.

I think when people get a feel for the different sides their will be no problem in discerning the different factions!

or in Basiley-

I think, when people reach, the feeling for their various parties will not be any problem in distinction of various fractions!

my brethren will beat you with their batons of justice!
you will be pushed back to the dead end of despair!
i will shoot anarchy in the head with my bullet of chicken poo!

(Rahdo) #158

hmm, i think an option on pro-matches to enforce two unified colour schemes is a good idea. will look into it when i get back from holiday

now THIS is the kind of trash talking i’d like to see in this thread, you terrorist dog!

Me too, and i think that’s the experience ‘standard’ matches supply, where all sorts of unexpected things and combinations can happen. the pro-matches (or hardcore, or whatever we call them) where players can set up more unified and predictable rule will be ideal for competetive players…

(tokamak) #159

Surely it wouldn’t be hard to let both team leaders select a clan outfit that will be enforced across the entire team during a match?

(radiator) #160

I always hate when i join a guild in Guild Wars and the leader has the worst taste and i’m forced to wear the ugliest cape i ever saw.

I hope there are fashion tips in brink’s tutorial ahahaha

(i’m joking)
