Requests For Competition Tweaks

(Slade05) #61

Joe, please provide pictures for better understanding how exactly horrible pro configs make the game look.

(Loffy) #62

Tweaks in RtCW for example.

(Joe999) #63

no, this isn’t a game on a pentium 3, it’s quake wars …

(Floris) #64

I don’t know what to think of people who rather quit a game than turn the graphics down, I guess they fall in the same category as the anti trickjumping crowd who rather loses a match than “lower themselves to that level”. If the only way to defeat them is to become one of them, I would gladly do so.

(Joe999) #65

as we posted at the same time, i guess you didn’t see the pic i posted. seriously, i rather play a console game than what you see up there.

(shirosae) #66

Some other player tweaks his graphics so they suit him, and somehow this forces you to do the same, so graphics shouldn’t be tweakable?

Frankly, if someone wants to leave a game because I /kill to hit my respawn timer, they’re welcome to.

I’m also perfectly happy for someone to develop ETQWscrubmod with all sorts of arbitrary definitions of what is ‘cheap and unfair’, because maybe then I can actually play the game that’s been presented without the whining every time I take advantage of the existing vanilla game mechanics.

See, there’s a line in the sand, and the odd thing about the pr0 gamers and the superscrubs is that they’re too busy hating each other to notice that they’re both over there on the other side of it, demanding all sorts of bizzare rules based off arbitrary dogma.

(Floris) #67

Luckily no-one forces you to play with graphics like that.

You can’t whine about the competitive players using features SplashDamage or id Software put in for us, but you can whine about them putting those CVARs in the game in the first place. But this discussion doesn’t seem to be on topic at all.

Well said!

(Joe999) #69

that’s true, nobody forces me. i can also become frag-food for everyone as an alternative

(shirosae) #70

Yes, because like any fool knows, everyone plays with the same hardware, so the only differences in performance come from tweaking, and it’s not like anyone has to tweak to get the game playable because they play on older or budget hardware, and the differences from that performance tweaking are game-breaking, and it’s not like ETQW didn’t really respond well to tweaking anyway

Let’s not let reality get in the way of a good moan.

(Smooth) #71

Joe999, it’s just going to be a case of cheat-protecting cvars that seem potentially unfair.

I’m a massive config whore, but ideally we would support anything that needs tweaking in the menu and keep people out of the console.

I actually have to say, not to discredit any of the artists in any way, but I think that there is definite beauty to low-fi flat shaded, basically abstract games. It can be as much a legitimate art direction as “gritty realism” is, and also removed a layer of noise between the game mechanics and the graphics.

I’m not saying one is better than the other. I’m not saying that ETQW’s low-fi hacked down graphics were the intent of the artists. I’m just saying that they CAN be, and they can still be beautiful.

I’m biased, though: This is the first game I never finished, and I still get compliments on the graphical style (if not the gameplay… since I’m too embarassed to let anyone try it).

[edit] Though I should say that as soon as intentionally view obfuscating graphical effects such as tall grass, foliage lighting etc. appear in the game, there sort of DO need to be lines drawn on what can and can’t be turned off. Turning off foliage makes anyone who tries to use that to hide behind look a bit of a prat if it’s turned off for anyone else. In those cases where the “designed signal” is altered enough to upset the balance of the game, rather than simply clarified (i.e. there’s no gameplay difference if your textures settings are a bit lower… unless it’s on foliage/transparencies), you can justifyably bring design/sportsmanship concerns to the debate.

(tokamak) #73

Ah you beat me to it.

(engiebenjy) #74

One of the first things i tried todo in ETQW was to hide in some of the grass, I later discovered you can just turn it off… so what i was infact doing was just making it more difficult for myself to see :o

(darthmob) #75
that’s true, nobody forces me. i can also become frag-food for everyone as an alternative
That’s the one argument that annoys me the most about those debates. You do not play better because of your config! If you get owned, it’s most likely because the other one is better.

That said, I like to fiddle with configs, eyecandy, public gameplay and competition.

Ok constructive feedback…

 1. Biggest thing I would like to see is a sweet netcode. Something where a 100 ping player can still compete with a 55 / 75 pinger. Where bullets register great. I myself have never had this problem, but I also ping good every where. I do know alot of people have this problem and its ashame.

A perfect example of this is the QL netcode, i’ve been playing that for almost 18 months now and it’s something that is severely lacking. I’ve submitted demos of point blank hits not registering, and balatant misses killing people. I know this is something being looked at carefully by SD going by the discussions on IRC so I have no doubt about this one.

 1. Fast paced, you have the right modes going in. I would suggest not doing things to slowing it down … Like adding iron sight, rtcw didnt need it, this game doesnt need it. Just make the recoil some what big and you have to actually control the spread. 3 bullet burst from a distance and pulling the gun down up close. That would be sweet.

I’ve always been a movement based player, been on defrag for Q3 for many years, tricked in many games at high level RTCW, W:ET, ET:QW, CoD series until they deemed that unfit to move faster than a slight trip over a rock. Going by the footage that was leaked, the movement is a decent pace. The demos shown were with the slim body model which kinda skews the perspective a little… basically you can’t have it all. If you want the big guns then you’ll be a bit slower, if you want to fast then the weapons won’t pack as much of a a punch. Being the ETQW engine i’m sure the scope for movement and pace will still be there.

 1. vehicles suck, pretty sure tihs isnt a race car game and nobody that buys this game cares for vehicles, otherwise they would be buying bf1942 which actually implemented them the correct way ( even though I hate that game )

It has already been clarified that there will be no vehicles in many interviews, threads and discussions.

 1. make it spectator friendly, this is a huge selling point. being able to spectate the game and making demos is a must have, unless you wanna be like f.e.a.r and fail miserably after a few months of release ( where nobody buys your sequel )

That I agree on, not a huge selling point but has many many benefits.

 1. I understand you’re gonna add perks and all that crap you think is “cool” but seriously we dont need it, so let me make a simply idea for you. Make it so we can disable it for leagues, pretty sad we have to constantly rely on coders in the communities to do your job… You make the money, We spend the money can we get what we want for once?

I’ve already mentioned the possible effects perks and upgrades will have on comp play, you’ll have 1 clan with full perks playing against others that purely do strat play and never venture to pubs, which will imbalance the game. I alreadu suggested a stripped down version in IRC chat… where 90% of my game discussion takes place. Can’t see i agree with the attitude towards SD though, this is their game and they make it how they want, if you want say on how they make their game, then i suggest buying a few shares

Keep people like darkangel from speaking their input. People like him have been making companies like you… Make awful games for the past 3? 4? years… Its been so long I cant remember…

I’d personally like to apologise to the gaming world for being solely responsible for game developers making bad games. I don’t know what to say, i didn’t mean it… i just like pink guns with fairies on them :frowning:

I’ll keep it respectable aim, but tbh your attitude stinks. Your feedback is sound but you openess to criticism is severely lacking, and you need to realise that comp players make up a very minute number of the gaming population… that alone should be an indication that comp play isn’t the 1st thing on developers minds when they come to make a new game.

(madness) #77

I think you’re right.

(Rahdo) #78

Oh noes! Dark! NOOOO!

Fair enough, you didn’t want to leave Aim with the last word. Very human impulse, hard to avoid. But everybody can get along. Honestly, I want to pull an Obama and have a beer with the two of you guys in the whitehouse!

You guys are looking for different things in the game. Heated words were spoken, we’re past that now. Everyone understands where everyone else is coming from, and a good and genuine conversation doesn’t have to get drug down.

As for the issues of ‘pro players’ making their game ugly, my feeling is always 'hey, they paid 50 bucks. let ‘em do what they want!’, as long as it doesn’t give them an unfair advantage – i.e. being able to turn off tall grass, or thick smoke, or other elements that are designed as part of the game balance. i think turning off texture detail in terrain is really on the hairy edge. you could argue it’s just to help framerate, but it does make enemies pop much more visually. however, we’re trying to ensure enemies are noticeable in game anyway (without the ever present red triangles!), so hopefully that’s not too much of a problem.

(madness) #79

That’s what has been worrying me after seeing the screenshots of Brink. The 2 sides don’t really look that much different, in my opinion. Can’t really tell what kind of armor a guy is wearing if he is far away :stuck_out_tongue:

But it’s hard to tell from just a few screens so…

(DarkangelUK) #80

I’ve edited my reply this time, can’t say it’ll happen again in the future  My attitude towards elitists can only be held at bay for so long.
