[REQUEST] Wolfenstein: Enemy Territory (Re-make)

(dYNK) #1

Its been more than 2 years since I left the community of Wolfenstein Enemy Territory due to lack of activity. This game was becoming very challenging for new players to catch on as mentioned in another post on this forum, so only the “veterans” could really experience such a game. But sadly as the community depleted due to many reasons, it has come to a point where it is next to impossible for a ‘newbie’ to play ET. I recently had a urge to play ET again but when I tried it took me hours to download, install, and connect to a server. All because of slow redirect to download from and required to download random clan server files. Than finally when you do connect to a server, full of bots with maybe 1 actual other person (who will never talk in game chat).

I can actually say that Wolfenstein Enemy Territory is the best game I’ve experienced by far. Yes, games like COD series are very popular but there popularity only stays until the next game in the series which is usually couple months to a year later. There hasn’t been many games where people could say they have played it for 2-8 years. I have played this game for 4 years and couldn’t say that I didn’t enjoy every bit of it. It took me more than a year to experience the full and every bit of this game. As a player you get an opportunity of choosing between Soldier, Medic, Engineer, Field Ops, or Covert Ops, each serving a different goal to help your team ultimately win the map. The best part was that the basis of this game all relied on teamwork among teams which was taken to another level by the competitive community, who practiced strategies and teamwork to compete against other teams to determine the best team. Wolf ET had one of the best and largest online communities, anywhere from competing in a league (eg. SNL) to watching them live (via gamestv.org) or betting on them. The amount of leagues that were offering 3v3-6v6 to players to compete was amazing with of course prizes and most of all the title, that believe it or not a lot of players wore proudly. There were countless forums of Wolfenstein clans and teams, not to mention many websites that served just as a redirect where players could download game files from. This all came from a community that did this for each other to play this game. For example, Buying a server for your clan or team, or even public. The functionality of game servers were displayed flawlessly in this game. To be credited for paying for a server with the use of rcon command and modifications made to server to allow the owner to give access to not only himself but there friends or clan members who use the server with different levels, determining the power the individual is given over other public playing on the server. Which also leads into the Clan part of the ET. Countless clans have been made by individuals with websites, forums, clan servers, ventral/teamspeak servers, etc. to attract more of the community towards their clan name as well as more traffic towards their servers. Also to grow in popularity over other clans. Aside from playing, there was a lot of coding that was done on ET including, making of maps, mods, customization (classes, sound, visual), etc. As a player, the use of config was an excellent tool to enhance your experience where you could preset any function of the game from changing classes with one key or shouting random vsay commands with random global chat messages.

Some suggestions I could make that would help the game come back ‘alive’:

  • keeping fewer patches, instead of 2.55,2.60,2.60b, have just one patch making it easier for newcomers
    • keep all mods (jaymod, etpub, etpro) but create one patch with all of the functions from previous patches,
      ex. etpro 3.2.6
  • limiting amount of excess files on a server apart from map files and mod files
  • better security system or more support on/with Punkbuster

I just went over what I remember of my favourite games that I discovered when I was 12. I think that a lot of people could agree with me on this one. My point to make this thread was to see or possibly create another opportunity to experience Wolfenstein Enemy Territory once again. If there was enough support and people willing for such a thing. A request for SplashDamage team and ID Software to rebuild this game for all their fans and supporters. With all the minor fixes that could be made and bring back improved Punkbuster or equivalent to secure it once again. To revive and bring back that same community and invite more newcomers.

I would like to see everyone who has ever played Wolfenstein Enemy Territory comments, suggestions, thoughts, agree/disagree, anything else you could add…

BUMP

Seriously tho this is all everyone wants.

EVERYTHING Almost literally the same.
Updated Graphics

I’m very sure Splash could even do this at no cost an even profit off while making it free by just asking for donations or fundraiser. Heck I’d donate and I know tons of others that would also. No other game had be playing 12 hours until my wrists and fingers will killing me everyday.

Yes the new COD is ok but its only a shadow of Wolf and everyone who had the Wolf ET experience agrees.

Requesting Splash response.

unfortunately ET is dying why? fake servers ,deceptive admins ,redirection abuse ,endless exploits, endless custum menus endless custom theme think of F|A guys and theirs fake servers 64/70 connected ! really? when u connect u got redirected to another server crowded with bots disconnect and connect to the second server on the list well its another F|A fake server .

(Indloon) #6

Downloading menus, redirection abuse … That is Jaymod.

If you wanna play ET as it should be played, then you should look at ETpro mod.

However some public ETpro servers players lack of respect to new players and vote kick them because “they are too noobs”.

Btw, the game is ET is owned by ZeniMax Media

(dYNK) #7

So why not make another patch? … with more support (ex. As soon as a fake server comes up, its deleted automatically or a report function can be added, where players may report servers being fake, than taken care of asap).

Even on Etpro there aren’t many, if any NA servers left… Some good European servers still out there but what I remember of them being one of the most active servers now with full of bots… and playing on a European server is only as fun as the amount of ‘lag’ you receive.

Redirection abuse could be corrected easily, don’t allow any at all.

As far as customization goes, if people like it… keep it for only jaymod and/or NQ.

(Destroy666) #8

Yes, sure… like other pub servers with different mods don’t have that. Should I show you also some ETPro servers with menus, skinpacks and other useless stuff? And not trying to defend Jaymod, just can’t stand haters writing complete nonsense.

A patch for a 9 years old game? Look for ET:Legacy, or OpenWolf, see the unfinished ETXreaL, there’s still projects coming. There’s a Zombie mod which was well going until the team has less time to work on it, there’s an adaptation of ET for ETQW, you can’t sum up all the active or paused projects…

I play since 2006 and map sometimes for almost 2 years, and there will always be people to see and test this stuff.

I haven’t found a lot of ETPro with custom annoying stuff, maybe it’s because I just stayed on few ones (And now on a single one)…

I had to give the IP to a friend that wanted to play ET again. He was as well sick of fake redirects…

(acQu) #10

9 years more or less, does not matter. People still have fun modding this game. And there will be also new mods, patchs whatever. I have faith ^^

About redirects: well it ain’t as easy as you think. Maybe removing the patch option from your et.exe would do it. Then you will not be able to get redirects into your ET application anymore. Setting up a patch like this is less than 5 minutes actually, it just needs someone to compile the mod with 1 or 2 lines of code removed. But noone is going to use this, since people are still wanting PB. Also the patch is hard to get ‘official’.

I am thinking of something now, Indloon ? You have all rights to remove the redirect option in the client lol ^^

Punkbuster seems to be the most user friendly system out there, new anticheats like tz-ac where you have to install and register an account seem to have loop holes with members just creating new accounts and than continuing to cheat. Also tz-ac doesn’t support mac players and there is a lot of them out there…

So no one would be wiling to code couple changes to bring this game back?!?! :0

Punkbuster dropped support for ET more than 6 months ago.

Well, I have been playing ETpro for 4 years, I haven’t still found a server where I must download menu, skin paks.

And 2/3 of ETpro servers are password protected, which are used for IRC matches.

Yes I know that ^^

TZAC has new GUID system, when old cheaters got busted, their GUID was different. This gives them second chance to create new account and have fun with it. About the MacOS support, well it is way complicated to code a application in MacOS than WinOS, when you don’t have a Mac book.

There are some project out already, ETXreal, which is half-done and it’s inactive project, because Tr3b likes to enjoy sunny days ;D, OpenWolf, which continues ETXreal project in Dushan hands, ET:Legacy, which is pretty buggy at input side but has FreeBSD support and ET:Plus, where anything isn’t done, yet ^^,

(TXSSTEVE) #15

I don’t think we need another patch or mod… Just a decent server.
If a couple people from the community got together and got a server running on Pub or Pro and if we could maintain at least 10 people on during peak hours of the day then I would help with both the cost of the server and moderating the server for cheaters/hackers.
If anyone remembers the TXS / #uF clan servers from back in the day thats the format that we had running. Just 1 server that had a dedicated staff and players. We never ran PB, there was always at least 1 Mod/clan member on the server or within reach via xfire so if anyone did cheat they would get a swift ban.

(huPoo) #16

The thing killing ET is ego. Players who kick others for being too good or too noob. Modders who don’t share their codes between each other because they don’t want to see their features in other mods, causing every new mod to be utter crap for the first 50 releases. Mappers who don’t listen to the community or focus on the gameplay at all.

Solution:

  • Get bani to release etpro source for better mods in the future. As he probably isn’t going to make new etpro version, there would be no harm in doing so. Selfish to not share your candy, even if you made it yourself. Many people have good ideas for mod, but don’t want to start because there’s just way too many fixes that has to be done before they can even concentrate on the mod features.
  • Less chokehold-points in new maps and more testing, preferably with people who will give honest opinion
  • cg_teamchatsonly “1” to ignore all the bull**** in public servers
  • Remove custom loading screens, watermarks, sounds from servers, they’re usually very low in quality anyway.

(Indloon) #17

There are a lot of mod source codes up on internet. For example: ETpub, Chaos mod, NoQuarter … etc even FalckonET

As mod developers have free to go about sharing the code,I’m fine if it will be closed.

ETpub is pretty close to ETpro mod.

Same goes to CompET, which has almost all features as ETpro mod does, like server config parsing…etc.

And Bani isn’t selfish, he is lazy. And he can’t just share the ETpro code, a lot of things must be removed before … And btw the Bani could still be around here, but he did lose his house in 2005 because of fire … ( Thanks to Microsoft he has his own house hosted by them ).

(Radegast) #18

Interesting. I wonder if other experienced players agree with this statement.

Could you point me to the source code of CompET, please?

(Dragonji) #19

CompET ≠ ETPro. CompET is/was just a cut version of N!tmod.

N!trox hasn’t realeased source code of CompET.

(Indloon) #20

I pointed out that CompET has most of ETpro features in, but not being the same as ETpro.
