Its been more than 2 years since I left the community of Wolfenstein Enemy Territory due to lack of activity. This game was becoming very challenging for new players to catch on as mentioned in another post on this forum, so only the “veterans” could really experience such a game. But sadly as the community depleted due to many reasons, it has come to a point where it is next to impossible for a ‘newbie’ to play ET. I recently had a urge to play ET again but when I tried it took me hours to download, install, and connect to a server. All because of slow redirect to download from and required to download random clan server files. Than finally when you do connect to a server, full of bots with maybe 1 actual other person (who will never talk in game chat).
I can actually say that Wolfenstein Enemy Territory is the best game I’ve experienced by far. Yes, games like COD series are very popular but there popularity only stays until the next game in the series which is usually couple months to a year later. There hasn’t been many games where people could say they have played it for 2-8 years. I have played this game for 4 years and couldn’t say that I didn’t enjoy every bit of it. It took me more than a year to experience the full and every bit of this game. As a player you get an opportunity of choosing between Soldier, Medic, Engineer, Field Ops, or Covert Ops, each serving a different goal to help your team ultimately win the map. The best part was that the basis of this game all relied on teamwork among teams which was taken to another level by the competitive community, who practiced strategies and teamwork to compete against other teams to determine the best team. Wolf ET had one of the best and largest online communities, anywhere from competing in a league (eg. SNL) to watching them live (via gamestv.org) or betting on them. The amount of leagues that were offering 3v3-6v6 to players to compete was amazing with of course prizes and most of all the title, that believe it or not a lot of players wore proudly. There were countless forums of Wolfenstein clans and teams, not to mention many websites that served just as a redirect where players could download game files from. This all came from a community that did this for each other to play this game. For example, Buying a server for your clan or team, or even public. The functionality of game servers were displayed flawlessly in this game. To be credited for paying for a server with the use of rcon command and modifications made to server to allow the owner to give access to not only himself but there friends or clan members who use the server with different levels, determining the power the individual is given over other public playing on the server. Which also leads into the Clan part of the ET. Countless clans have been made by individuals with websites, forums, clan servers, ventral/teamspeak servers, etc. to attract more of the community towards their clan name as well as more traffic towards their servers. Also to grow in popularity over other clans. Aside from playing, there was a lot of coding that was done on ET including, making of maps, mods, customization (classes, sound, visual), etc. As a player, the use of config was an excellent tool to enhance your experience where you could preset any function of the game from changing classes with one key or shouting random vsay commands with random global chat messages.
Some suggestions I could make that would help the game come back ‘alive’:
- keeping fewer patches, instead of 2.55,2.60,2.60b, have just one patch making it easier for newcomers
- keep all mods (jaymod, etpub, etpro) but create one patch with all of the functions from previous patches,
ex. etpro 3.2.6
- keep all mods (jaymod, etpub, etpro) but create one patch with all of the functions from previous patches,
- limiting amount of excess files on a server apart from map files and mod files
- better security system or more support on/with Punkbuster
I just went over what I remember of my favourite games that I discovered when I was 12. I think that a lot of people could agree with me on this one. My point to make this thread was to see or possibly create another opportunity to experience Wolfenstein Enemy Territory once again. If there was enough support and people willing for such a thing. A request for SplashDamage team and ID Software to rebuild this game for all their fans and supporters. With all the minor fixes that could be made and bring back improved Punkbuster or equivalent to secure it once again. To revive and bring back that same community and invite more newcomers.
I would like to see everyone who has ever played Wolfenstein Enemy Territory comments, suggestions, thoughts, agree/disagree, anything else you could add…
