Brink actually did hit around ~20k when it first came out, it just dropped to ~1k within 3 weeks. Now it doesn’t even show on the Steam stats site, even during prime time. Meaning there are less than 200 people playing world wide. The free weekend had it back up to 10k again, but soon after we were back to the low hundreds. Splash Damage continues to do nothing to retain players.
Rahdo's words - what happened here?
@wolf You’re in serious denial. While it’s perfectly fine that you and a minority like the game it’s clear a large proportion of those who bought it didn’t. Hiding behind it being a commercial success means nothing, in fact the game fell like a stone off the all the charts right after release, if that doesn’t scream marketing sales I don’t know what does.
You may want to parrot Rahdo to get more pats on the back but I’d like to think that the spin doctoring aside SD can’t be happy with a game that’s plummeted in players so fast. I don’t think they’re arrogant enough to assume that it’s due to some platform wide elitist or stubborn attitude to undermine something new and different. They know what an active community is like and it’s not a handful of players derping up a forum.
While I’m enjoying Deus Ex: Human Revolution (“49.5 hrs last two weeks / 71.4 hrs on record”) it’s a completely different genre of game and can hardly be compared to Brink. I’ll play Deus Ex all the way through once then put it away for awhile and go back to Brink. Maybe I’ll dust it off in a couple months and play it through with a different style but in the meantime I’ll be logging in a couple hours on Brink every day.
I’m sure it will be the same with Rage. I don’t plan on playing it multiplayer, just getting it for the single player storyline.
The only thing that may cause me to leave Brink for any length of time is Diablo III but the Brink devs are probably going to be playing that too so, no worries.

Couple of things. Firstly, my post was a response to the claim Brink was the best game to come out so far in 2011. I’m saying it isn’t. The original claim wasn’t genre specific and you can’t therefore discount a game based on it not being multiplayer. Arguably however, it is still a shooter (of sorts) but at it’s core; it’s really a role playing game. Regardless, it can still be compared to Brink in terms of 2011’s ‘best’. I’m afraid your point is therefore moot.
On the subject of bugs etc, Brink was a far sloppier release from my own experience. I’ve had some minor issues on PC, others have had much worse. I’ve had some lock ups and severe texture problems on PS3 so that’s not immune, either.
Currently, I’ve yet to play through DX:HR on PC but on PS3 I’ve put in excess of 50 hours and never once hit an issue. Not once. I’ve done everything except Pacifist and Foxiest of the Hounds as far as trophies are concerned so can say with confidence I’ve seen the majority of what the game has to offer. It’s excellent and that’s why I’ve spent more time there than I have on Brink PS3.
Despite having seen so much, I’m still raring to go to finish the platinum and keep experiencing the game so replay value is definitely there also.
So, to return to my original point. In terms of 2011 releases, there’s at least 1 game that’s better than Brink. In a few weeks, there will be many.
Edit
Mass Effect 2 PS3 is another game that’s streets ahead (Jan 2011). Crysis 2 is arguably up there, too. Let’s also not forget about games like Dead Space 2, Killzone 3, The Witcher II, Shadows of the Damned and LA Noire.
I’ll assume this is a lack of a grasp of the English language on your part. I was specifically comparing the “polish” of Brink to the “polish” of Deus Ex. Not sure where you are getting anything else out of that.

Whatever; you’ll always think Brink is the best game ever to be made even when clearly presented with laundry lists of bugs and previous games that outshine their spiritual (or true successor if you go by the whole “this is ET3, let’s not mince words” thing rahdo said) successor.
Pfft, the best game ever is Planescape: Torment, everyone knows that.

I like Brink for what it is…and for the record never particularly liked W:ET or ETQW (for different reasons that have been discussed ad nauseam). However that said, there is simply no way you can say Brink is ‘a step into modern gaming’ without knowing/playing the previous titles in this particular genre subset (and by that I mean go back at least 10yrs to RTCW) - if your reference is purely console related then there might be some merit, but without knowing the player numbers there I’m not certain that anyone can say this has ‘paved the road’ to anything.
and just to be controversial, imo;
RTCW>BRINK>ET>ETQW

I don’t have a problem grasping the English language, and I have no idea how in the heck you got that out of any of my replies. If anyone here were to have a problem with the English language it’d be your friends at the hardcore club who can’t actually formulate a well written reply to anything besides topics saying “BRINK IS GREAT!!!”
I even re-read my posts and am at a loss for what could possibly make you think I don’t have a grasp on the English language; that just cracks me up, to be honest, as you’re the one using the idiom completely out of place. You say I’m putting words in your mouth, yet the text you quote is me asking a semi-rhetorical question (although I left out the question mark, but oh well I was going somewhere else with the sentence until I realized it just isn’t worth my time to even bother trying to make any points as none of you will ever try to make counterpoints besides “brink is better”).

This is my all-time favorite game for the time being… Until Mass Effect 3 comes out and I can nerdgasm all over THAT one. <3

And here’s a rope. Please go hang yourself.
harsh, but if it was choice between that or playing substandard spamtastic w:et or etqw i guess the rope would win
Brink, arguably the best shooter of 2011!
Definitely the most fun and innovative.
Stands apart from the crowd of play-it-safe sequels.
Game of the Year.
