Rahdo's words - what happened here?

(SockDog) #941

Here is a post on G+ by Brandon Reinhart (Valve). Would I be wrong in saying SD is falling into this trap on at least some aspects of the game and as a result the bits that don’t work are dragging the rest of the design down?

“The seventh virtue is simplicity. Antoine de Saint-Exupéry said: “Perfection is achieved not when there is nothing left to add, but when there is nothing left to take away.” Simplicity is virtuous in belief, design, planning, and justification. When you profess a huge belief with many details, each additional detail is another chance for the belief to be wrong. Each specification adds to your burden; if you can lighten your burden you must do so. There is no straw that lacks the power to break your back. Of artifacts it is said: The most reliable gear is the one that is designed out of the machine. Of plans: A tangled web breaks. A chain of a thousand links will arrive at a correct conclusion if every step is correct, but if one step is wrong it may carry you anywhere. In mathematics a mountain of good deeds cannot atone for a single sin. Therefore, be careful on every step.” - Yudkowsky

Thread name = Rahdo’s words - what happened here?
Answer = Lack of Communication
Result = Game was basically killed by Devs

like Linux server files, a simple yes, no or even a short story about we are looking into it and will return with an answer within a certain timeframe

(tokamak) #943

There was quite a lot of communication between the devs and this community, it’s just that they’ve chosen to forego these interests for what they (or the publishers) thought that the players actually wanted.

(Spendlove) #944

Rahdo is away on holiday. Give them a break Sheesh!

(SockDog) #945

Rahdo is back

Previous two posts were referring to the game as a whole not this immediate thread

Ho ho, that would be behaving like humans, not a corporation ! Be careful what you say ! It’s pretty obvious to a cynical enough person they want linux folks to keep asking and increasing the traffic.

Anyone noticed that the answers are dated from August 2009.
Idk but these answers are based on the Brink alpha version?

(FFSturm) #948

String name=rahdo;
if (name.equals(“Peter Sokal”)){
syso(“Thread = Win”);}
else{
syso(“have a nice day and gtfo”);}

That’s the whole point of the thread…
if (rahdo.equals(“Peter Sokal”)){

else{
syso(“gtfo”);}
Least rahdo stuck around after release to answer things, Sokal just ran off laughing with our money.

(FFSturm) #950

oh mr.sokal. good times, good times xD Making me lol since 2009

btw, who is rahldo?

(Breo) #951

I wanted to say that they could make other decisions for the final version :wink:
Take a quick look at the first 2 QA what’s wrong here? Health packs = syringe, second question; probably they didn’t find the right GUI coder?

Read the rest of the thread…

(Breo) #953

Pfft 47 pages, okay I’ll give up :tongue:

(ArkRebel) #954

Oh what wisdom… Normally I only read such threads time by time and don’t wast time on replying.
But this time I have to :wink:

I’m a dedicated PC-gamer since DOS 5.0 which played a few times on consoles of friends but will never buy one.
I played original Wolf-ET in a clan many years ago… and I do NOT understand the ‘letdown’. Of course veterans may miss some things (customizable crosshair for example), but if I compare this to the things Brink has and classic ET not… oh, then I no longer care about things like crosshairs, sorry.

Of course some parts of Brink may remind the fact that it is a cross-platform-title. But that is normal today, sad but true, wake up people. And still the support for the PC-version is better imo, also you have the greatest gaming experience in PC-version (not only because of the controls, the graphics are way better, no console can handle high res + AA + real AO).

It’s quite funny that some hardcore-ET-fans hate Brink because it’s not ET (why not playing ET or ET:QW then? The games still exist :wink: ) and that many casual-shooter-players hate it because it’s too different/too much ET (means: it’s not boring CoD :eek: )…

Last words: Nothing personal, but only spoke for yourself, not for every single ‘veteran’ in SD-games.

(wolfnemesis75) #955

There are plenty of people like myself who still play Brink and are patiently waiting for forthcoming Brink content or whatever else is coming down the pike. There are lots of cool directions that SD can go in depending on what Bethesda plans to do. And also other projects they may not even be Brink down the road that I am looking forward to. At some point, we’ll get some news.

(.Chris.) #956

I can’t speak for every RTCW, ET or ET:QW player but I suspect the vast majority that don’t like Brink, don’t like it not because it’s not RTCW, ET or ET:QW but rather because Brink just isn’t as good as those games for reasons debated to death many times now, whether it be the skill cap, level design, weapon balance, bugs and such.

Also, many do still play ET and ET:QW.

Some folk reckon they are stuck in the past and unwilling to adapt, well as someone who enjoyed ET (2003), ET:QW (2007) and even Wolfenstein (2009) I can say that’s bull as I’ve managed to adapt to 3 very different games that are team based objective games.

(wolfnemesis75) #957

I feel Brink is a step into modern day gaming. Brink does a lot of stuff better than ET:QW in that respect and opens up SD gameplay to a much wider audience and ultimately, a more fun crowd who play on console. The transition to that mindset had to happen, and is what is paving the road for growth and future potential. So, at the end of the day: Brink is better. More fun for more people.

(Verticae) #958

Except ETQW has more active players than Brink on PC right now. So to argue it’s ‘more fun for more people’ is completely wrong for PC players.

(wolfnemesis75) #959

More people got a chance to experience SD gameplay in Brink for the first time and overall. More people at the party means more fun. Brink was a financial success according to Rahdo. Icing on the cake. Brink=More fun. :slight_smile:

(.Chris.) #960

Care to explain any of that? Afaik you haven’t played ET:QW so how the hell can you say Brink does a lot of stuff better than it.

You say Brink is better, again having not played ET:QW or ET how can you state this?

It would be like me saying Fallout3 is better than Fallout 1 and 2 because 3 was the only one I played and I really enjoyed it therefore it’s instantly better than the previous games I haven’t played, I can only comment on the one game I have tried on it’s own merits, I can’t compare it to games I haven’t played…

Player stats say otherwise.
