Rahdo's words - what happened here?

(Crytiqal) #561

@FireWorks

People complain BRINK is too hard to get in to?
Sorry, this just BLOWS my mind. This game is dead simple!

You just use wasd, press shift once and move your mouse in the general direction of an enemy and press mouse1.

If you want, you can even press F or X occasionally.
But again, I don’t have any sources, that’s what puzzles me the most, how did SD get so cock-sure about their target audience?
They visited old lady homes and gave them a questionnaire about online gaming. :infiltrator:

(Crytiqal) #563

I thought they all had their uncles and aunts beta testing the game?
Wasn’t that said they had relatives testing it for them?

(tokamak) #564

Oh now I understand it, maybe we should just all agree on plugging in an xbox controller in our pc’s, maybe we’ve been doing it wrong all along.

(gooey79) #565

And all those old ladies knew about online gaming was ‘foxybingo.com’. Hence, the spread being a gamble. A lottery, if you will.

(Crytiqal) #566

Too bad the xbox controller input has been disabled for the PC version.
Maybe they could enable this in a patch?

I’m serious

Just read through the whole thread, have to say I’m glad for SD the game turned out acceptable for them, at least that’s better than nothing.
Bonus points for Rahdo for reading it alll and taking the time to reply. For me the Brink adventure is already over (technically it never started anyway, ATI framerate etc.), all it did was it made me play ETQW again which is still a masterpiece.

Thanks for the ride, I’ll be around to see what your next game is, but I will not blindly preorder again. I don’t even dare wearing that Brink Tshirt I have in public :frowning:

Though I dont think you even bothered to read the whole post, Ill still reply.

Search the forums for launch date posts and youll find enough of people with a different opinion on how easy this game is. Same with reviews. “Why is this so badly documented”- they got flamed right away…

We are veterans, we are different. That doesnt mean that others cant have trouble getting into it.

We had this type of “too hard” complaints back in ETQW (RIP beloved forum) and SDs answer was to strip things down, simplifying them. Some would say “dumbed down”… to appeal to a broader audience.

I wonder why they didnt went another way. Why not explain a more complex game in a proper way to broaden the audience while appealing the core fan base? There are so many games out there that dont even let you feel that you play a tutorial. Id also take newbs by the hand and show them the ropes in a mentoring programm like others organised it in the etqw forums back in the days.

(Rex) #569

What I’m really wondering about is the fact that SD said they were testing Brink.
They had an intern testing team and they haven’t noticed that the game was totally imbalanced?
PC gamers noticed this in the first week. Either they got the wrong people to test a game or the were no tests at all…

(Crytiqal) #570

I’d go with “no testing AT all”.

If they did, how the hell could this miss the sound bug on TWO maps?

@FireWorks
You mean that idiot who was ranting on youtube how the game didn’t explain how to get ammo once he got to the command post?

(AnthonyDa) #571

Maybe they used (dumb) bots for ze playtesting

(.FROST.) #572

From all(its not that much in the end) the things I’d criticize in Brink this wouldn’t be one of it. Actually I found it a nice move to not make you the ueber-hero. Made it somehow more believeable since in every other game you are the guy saving the world. Its funnier to spot your nose somewhere in the background. Its like an inside joke only you get. Very subtle, I like it.

What I actually do miss is ingame chatter with the bots. I mean yeah, there is allways this funny guy in my back who asks me “if I lost some weight recently”, but thats no real communication. I probably wouldn’t have noticed that(difference between promo and release vers.) if I wouldn’t had watched the CC promo play-through again recently. At least in the SP part it would have been nice to watch those guys talk, from a 1st person pov. Maybe being able to talk back or interact in any way would’ve been great.

Yeah, time and budget constrains, I know. And I really understand. Only wanted to post something myself in this ueber-thread  Hope I even contributed something useful.

(Crytiqal) #573

Like the first video’s of Container City gameplay.
Where there was a whole animation cinematic going on with the helicopter flying over and stuff.

Oh well

You have the game, you have steam, maybe when the ATI problem for many is solved (and yours) and the game thanks to SD’s epic efforts to dethrone TF2 in playerbase and it has tons of mods and on a lonely bored day you see the greyed out Brink in your library and you go “what the heck, why not” download it and well, the next thing you know you have yourself a dumbledore beard with dishes all around you, only leaving for the toilet and continuing to play Brink, for the rest of your life :stuck_out_tongue:

I agree with Frost as well. This aspect of Brink is very fresh and cool.

(SockDog) #576

If I have to single out one aspect that seems to have driven SDs direction it was the reception to ETQW. Namely the steep learning curve for the game and unpopular aspects such as non-persistent development. Brink seems to be a knee jerk reaction to those points in epic proportion. The problem is that IMO Brink now suffers on the other end of the scale.

For the learning curve you had your answer right there in Brink. The challenges. Man what a wasted opportunity to single out difficult concepts in the game and let someone learn through repetition and with minimal distraction. The fact that the challenges could also represent smaller, versus and co-op game modes seems to have been lost also. Such a shame.

I also feel SD needs to produce a proper singleplayer campaign. This will bring in players and again allow you to introduce some gameplay mechanics that MP possess. And I mean proper, not just an MP map with bots and some cut scenes.

For the persistent stuff I’d love SD to do something original and dump XP. I still believe the system is overly complicated and at the core breaks down to people playing the game for the wrong reason. I’ll admit I don’t have the answer here, yet I still like the idea of a more social driven system, where by your team and server rate players from their perspective, either awarding XP directly or some sort of multiplier. Make the players accountable to their team, the server and the quality of the game. Either way I feel Brink again lost some appeal by heading off in this “ME TOO!” finite lifespan crack chasing aspect of FPS games. Just my opinion though.

“Add to that the internet’s default mode is to complain about everything, and you have to take forum flames with a grain of salt, I think. When people are unhappy about a game they were excited for, they go online and post about it. When people are happy with a game they were excited for, they just keep playing and don’t go online. Generally speaking. This is the way the internet works… :)”

Except no ones playing the game.
The Feathered Carpenter
By XVX

Carpenter: Why are you pounding that nail with a feather? Take this hammer, it’s easier to use.

Raztaz: Exactly, the hammer is easier to use. I like a challenge.

Carpenter: But the hammer is easier to use because it’s designed to pound nails in. Your tool shouldn’t make the job more difficult, but easier. You’re never going to be a good carpenter pounding nails in with a feather.

Raztaz: Whatever.

throws the hammer back at the carpenter and with mighty swings of his feather, continues to pound the nail

The Future for Cars
By XVX

Car Salesman: Here’s our new model car, great price, great looks, great gas mileage.

XVX: How come it has no tires?

Car Salesman: Once you purchase the car, we will send you tires in a couple months for an extra fee.

XVX: Extra fee? Didn’t cars used to come with tires?

Car Salesman: Yep, but we don’t work for free ya know.

XVX: But the car is the same price as previous cars that already had tires.

Car Salesman: Well, it cost a lot more money to build this car.

XVX: And what do I get from your higher costs?

Car Salesman: Well, a lot less features. For example, you can no longer adjust the seats, the rear view mirror is fixed in place and we took out reverse. We also had a lot of complaints that the steering wheel was too easy to use, so we replaced it with this console thumb stick. And as you already noticed, it has no tires. Actually, most of the money we spent on this great customization feature, that while irrelevant to the performance of the car, does allow you to change the color of the car.

XVX: What?!? No tires?!? No steering wheel?!? No reverse?!? But I can customize the paint job?!? No one’s going to buy…

Raztaz: Wow, dat’s like, friggn da bomb man. I’ll take it. When can I expect the tires?

after customizing the color of his new car a few times, Raztaz gives the car some gas with X and drives away on the rims using a console thumb stick
none of that makes any sense to wat I was saying. its more like this
car salesman : here is a car with a 2 year warranty , if something goes wrong we will fix it for free.
XVX: ok that suxs wheres the 20 inch rims and bose sound system with the 15 inch speakers?
car salesman : um that is not a part of the car those are accesories that are a little extra.
XVX: This is an outrage!!! I want mah 20 inch rims free now!!! i dont care if it cost your comany extra man power and if they have to work for free gimmie gimmie gimmie!!!
car salesman: please leave sir…

it can go both ways with your silly examples. these days it costs way more for small companies to develop for multi platforms yet like i said some pc gamers feel they are entitled to much more because they paid x amount of dollars for their super computer.

and btw videogames imo are no fun if they arent challenging, hence I normally play on the hardest difficulty and in terms of console shooters I turn aim assist off. using your example yes a mouse makes it easier but again imo point n click using a mouse is a boring gameplay mechanic for a shooter.

I like quoting the dumbest things I’ve ever heard and pasting them in my scrapbook.

This is perhaps the most hilarious thing I’ve ever read on any forum.

I shall now run off to play a FPS without ever pointing or clicking–ostensibly–to avoid boredom.

Priceless.
