Hi,
I ve found a news at pb.com:
Wednesday June 30th, 2004
So punks who are determined to cheat so badly on PB-enabled servers that they try to hack PunkBuster may now need a new computer in addition to a new cdkey in order to return to PunkBuster servers. As with previous PB GUID Global bans, the new Hardware GUID bans are permanent and will not be lifted.
Harsh stuff, but I don’t have a problem with it. Cheating gits deserve to fork out for a new PC.
Personally I don’t have a problem with the concept, however experiences from the last upgrade of PB, where the servers went berserk and either crasched or used up all CPU, leads me to be a little “afraid” of what is to come.
*me thinks about making a backup of the current settings rather fast, just in case…"
I’ve never seen a 130000 violation (“Attempted PunkBuster Hack”, which I assume this is about) so it’s possible that this isn’t gonna be a problem in reality though.
Pretty soon they are going to be instating capital punishment for cheators
It seems a bit harsh to me, I thought a global GUID ban would be enough. Like sauron said, computers with multiple users may prove to be problematic if one of the users gets the urge to try something “different” for a change, and load a hack…
well there going in the right direction, im not sure if this is right already but i think when punkbuster bans someone for hacking they could be banned on every server using PB on everygame using PB, would make a big difference
maby people who are caught using programs to hack have all there GUIDs banned forever or until they can prove they wernt cheating
BTW id like to see capital punishment
What your asking for my friend is a personal ID that uniquely identifies each and every one of us - I’d rather put up with a few cheaters tbh.
Thats a bit harsh to say nutter, its his opinion. It all is related to unique identification and privacy, and some people dont want to give up their privacy.
either i smoked to much or they just said u get banned from all pb servers for all games, if the later part is correct what i dont get is why the game developers would allow this because say i cheat on an ET server and i get banned for life then surely i wont buy another online game that has pb cos i know i cant get on the servers.
of course hopefully im wrong and u will all laugh at me for doing so and i will be happy again
i would like to point out that i dont cheat and never will but i just dont like pb and i think it has already stopped enough ppl playing et with all its problems even though none of them have cheated.
Well my brother and I both play ET from the same computer, and but usually under different names. I’ve threatened him on pain of death never to load a cheat, or fuck with the game files. If some idiot gets his brother/dad/sister/grandmother banned because he tried to do something he shouldn’t, then it just adds to the punishment.
Don’t cheat, and you’ll never have to worry about this.
RAV3N:
You forget, having a cheat infested game hurts sales. Which customers do you think they would rather have, a few cheaters, or all the people who went to the newest game because it isn’t full of cheaters ?
As long as PB avoid false positives, I don’t see any problem with this. However, their past record is rather mixed…
As far as kids installing stuff on your computer, and your whole family not getting to play, well, I’d say that means you didn’t raise 'em right. Buying a used computer is a potential problem (especially if than ban on any of several components) but really, I’d guess the chances are extremely small. You might want to check into personal lightning and meteor insurance first…
Also note that it seems these hardware bans will only be used for attempted PB hacks, not ‘normal’ bans.
as long as I ain’t being banned for having a r_picmip3 violation or empty name I put in accidently, i’m okay with it.

OMG r_picmip 3!!!111
I say we ban him for life!!!
:moo:
then again i thought ppl were getting rid of pb now that there is an anti-cheat system in ETpro3?
also having a cheating infested game doesnt hurt sales counter strike done alrite

Take some PB hacks and visit your local internet cafe, or spread them on the next lan (most systems there are heavily insecure). Like I’m said, Evenbalance is goind mad. Seems like they turned it into some form of witch hunt or religious war.
Btw. I’m also against cheating, but not at all costs.
You could already do that, and the internet cafe would have needed new keys for their games. I assume they secure their systems so you can’t install anything on them.
Lan parties always include risks. I’m not even going to sum up the possibilties to fuck up other people’s systems. Or steal them empty.
But of course some people will get a ban they don’t deserve, and that’s why I think permanent bans for all PB-games is quite a bit too radical. I’m sure evenbalance will have to reconsider this, but in the meanwhile it won’t hurt to strike some fear in the heart of the cheaters
But given all that I think the hardware GUID system is a good thing, especially for ET where there was no way to identify players.
I think we may see a new YAWN as well (for those who don’t know, it is a system in RTCW where you can check what other names a player has ever used. Helps against nicklaming in clanwars. And invades your privacy a bit along the way too imho
)
