Preordering ETQW: Registration of Username

(AnarchyAngel) #1

In the recent IGN article it meantions that if you preorder you will be able to secure you Username ahead of the games release.

Can one of the splash damage crew please elaborate on if this is Worldwide? Or as expected and as usual USA only?

Please Wils or BongoBoy can we get a reply?

From the sound of it, you will able to buy a pre-order box from certain stores, which will include a mini-strategy guide and a card with a code and a URL where you can input it to secure your username.

I’m a bit leery of pre-ordering after the last 2 games I’ve bought this way were not available to me until after other people already had the game from other retailers = annoying. The good news is that it sounds like you will now have to login before playing, which will tie your account to an username, so cheaters or banned people cant just change their name and come back (if they have a dynamic IP for example).

whoever preorders, share the url

just change their name and come back (if they have a dynamic IP for example).

without some kinda of system that lets the player benfit from using the same acount then what is to stop then creating musltiple acounts and just switch between them? not that i want an xp system like bf2 but just saying

unless each game comes with its own code and each code allows one username to be registerd. or have multiple profiles but all run under the same code so any player can be tracked to their code and banned from servers. too keep cheating then you would have to buy multiple copies of the game and that could be quite expensive

downside is that there would have to be some kinda loggin thing that could take ages like in bf2… i hope it loggs in running in the background so you can still search for servers/edit menus while you log in and save some time

Agreed. I hate how long it used to take to actually get in a game from clicking on BF2 to start it. I can remember not playing sometimes, just because I thought… “eh, I’m gonna have to wait 5-10 minutes before I get into a game, and then I might get the connection issue and have to start over…”.

I would imagine it is 1 account per game, that is common. If a cheater wants to go buy 5 copies so they can play on banned servers with another account, then I wish them luck…more sales help a game :stuck_out_tongue:

I still have to wait close to 5-7 minutes from when I click the BF2 icon to when I spawn. Really sucks having to wait that long to fire up a game that, at times, I can’t play for more than 30 minutes due to real world stuff. I can see having a big DB to verify names could help in ways already mentioned, but if the cost of that is slow loading times like in BF2 then I say don’t do it. Or come up with some other way. Regardless, when preorder is available i’m getting it (paying in full actually). Not so much for any perks by doing so (although those are nice). I just like knowing that my game is already bought/paid for in full and that all I have to do on the street day is show my receipt for in-store pick up, or just wait for the FedEx dude if its shipped. Either way I can’t wait for this game cause right now there is NOTHING out there that really interests me. I’m playing BF2 just to kill time till this is released… :frowning:

I bought HalfLife2 DM just a week ago just to kill the endless waiting time and i most say that the Steam account system Valve is using is MUCH better then the crappy BuggaField2 account crap.I am spawned in less then one minute after clicking on a friend in my Friends list. This includes starting up HL2!! So it can be done right.

Keep in mind dat EVERYthing in BF is hardly working as it should.

when you join any Enemy Territory, RTCW, Quake3 et al server your cdkey get’s authed by id (well, now by the evenbalance lot iirc). stats info etc should go from the server rather than client so i dont see any reason for the username thing to have any impact on game launch time.

(Salteh) #9

wtf, friends list?
Did they finally fix it? :o
[ninja edit] looks like they did!

(Hakuryu) #10

Bah, I hate Steam.

Imo it’s just retarded to have to start it up just to play single player. I’m also not a big fan of extra things running on my computer. It’s more of a sales tool for Valve rather than a convenience for gamers.

Steam would be much better if it was a bit more liberal. I thought it was great of them to provide an online distribution method.
However, there are no price benefits for downloading it. What’s worse, you can get it cheaper if you get the game or episodes in box in a store during a sale!
If only distributers would wisen up and figure that they’ll sell more copies of the game if they discount it online.
Look at ET… free for online download and still has a fantastic following. Pretty simple… Great game, great distribution method–great experience all around.

I pre-ordered mine on Amazon back in Novermber…does that mean I will be able to to get the “pre-order box…which will include a mini-strategy guide and a card with a code and a URL where you can input it to secure your username.”?

*I hope so…

If you’re going to have us register a username please make sure you have a field that can be added on later for clan tags. BF2 didn’t do this off the bat and it made it really hard for people who switched clans. It’s nice to have the extra field now.

As long as Quakewars doesn’t have anything like BF2 ranked and unranked server system than I’ll be happy. Almost all the populated servers on BF2 are ranked and therefore can’t have user created maps. It gets kind of dull to play the same maps over and over. The only new maps that EA released were the pay to play maps that just fragmented the servers. It really sucks. Thats one of the great things about Quake based games. Great user created content on top of a solid game.

A system like Steam helps get people custom maps automatically and quickly since you can have your downloads from a seperate server. I know it will be hard for QW’s to have an autodownload system because of how large the map files will be but I hope it’s still a feature you can turn on.

I’ve got to tell you I’m damn excited to get back into playing a Id & Splashdamage game again.

I’m assuming they’ll be updating the pre-order page in the near future so that the links actually work, but it does say US AND International.

(Shanks) #15

Quite a selection of retailers they have…

(AnarchyAngel) #16

Man if this is true dam thats lame EB Games is NOT a international Retailer (try going to ebgames.com.au), Very often I enter my local EB and they are CLUELESS to things that there American counterpart is aware of.

(crumblycake) #17

Here’s the URL to pre-order the game:

http://www.ebgames.com/product.asp?product_id=646561

(Centuri0n) #18

Hmm… That link to EB Games… they don’t mention anything about securing your game name, or any code or URL… I’ve had bad dealings with EB in the past. Not always, but enough to make me consider going somewhere else. I take it SD/Id won’t be selling directly?

(DG) #19

the registered name wont affect what you name yourself in game, far as I can tell it’ll just be for some global stat webpage and maybe official forums. It’s a nice idea to be able to set a variable tag section for display purposes but then i suppose there would need to be some method to protect the tag from fakers.

not necessary anyway, just register your username without tags, and put tags on ingame or in forum signature or whatever

(SniperSteve) #20

If we preorder today will we be able to get all of the beneifts of preordering, or do we have to wait till the announcement to preorder?
